Abstract

Many albatross populations are declining and a major cause is believed to be incidental mortality from fishing. We investigated the effect of fishing on southern Buller's albatross Thalassarche bulleri bulleri, using a new approach to seabird population modelling that allows estimation of demographic parameters from multiple data types. Three types of data were used: a 60-year set of mark–recapture observations, four censuses of the breeding population, and estimates of fishing effort and bycatch. The fisheries risk to the viability of this population over the last 60 years appears to have been small, since the adult population is estimated to have increased about five-fold over that time. There is some cause for concern in recent changes (population growth has slowed, and perhaps reversed, and adult survival rates are falling). The most common age at first breeding was 12 years, and about 80% of adults breed each year. Annual survival was estimated to be 0.91 for juveniles, and varied between this value and 1 for adults. Though this population is not in immediate danger from fishing, there is a need for continued monitoring to see whether the recent fall in survival rates persists and causes a decline in abundance. Our analysis showed that when, as is common, mark–recapture data do not provide good estimates of all demographic rates, the assessment of seabird population trends can be improved by the use of other types of data, particularly abundance.  相似文献

Introduction

We aimed to explore the associations between knee osteoarthritis (OA)-related tissue abnormalities assessed by conventional radiography (CR) and by high-resolution 3.0 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as biomechanical factors and findings from physical examination in patients with knee OA.

Methods

This was an explorative cross-sectional study of 105 patients with knee OA. Index knees were imaged using CR and MRI. Multiple features from CR and MRI (cartilage, osteophytes, bone marrow lesions, effusion and synovitis) were related to biomechanical factors (quadriceps and hamstrings muscle strength, proprioceptive accuracy and varus-valgus laxity) and physical examination findings (bony tenderness, crepitus, bony enlargement and palpable warmth), using multivariable regression analyses.

Results

Quadriceps weakness was associated with cartilage integrity, effusion, synovitis (all detected by MRI) and CR-detected joint space narrowing. Knee joint laxity was associated with MRI-detected cartilage integrity, CR-detected joint space narrowing and osteophyte formation. Multiple tissue abnormalities including cartilage integrity, osteophytes and effusion, but only those detected by MRI, were found to be associated with physical examination findings such as crepitus.

Conclusion

We observed clinically relevant findings, including a significant association between quadriceps weakness and both effusion and synovitis, detected by MRI. Inflammation was detected in over one-third of the participants, emphasizing the inflammatory component of OA and a possible important role for anti-inflammatory therapies in knee OA. In general, OA-related tissue abnormalities of the knee, even those detected by MRI, were found to be discordant with biomechanical and physical examination features.  相似文献

A growing array of synthetic bone regeneration scaffolds has been used or investigated over the last century. These scaffolds aim to provide a three dimensional substrate for bone cells to populate on and function appropriately. To serve this function, these scaffolds should be biocompatible and biodegradable at a rate commensurate with bone remodelling. Their mechanical properties should also be similar to those of the bone regeneration site. In this review, the main families of synthetic bone scaffolds were taxonomised and expounded. The main focus of this paper will be on the basic sciences principles and properties of clinical available as well as experimental synthetic bone scaffolds. Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) represents a highly prevalent disease and is recognized as a risk factor for the development of various cardiovascular disorders. The pathogenesis of cardiovascular complications in OSAS is not completely understood, but the unique form of hypoxia with repetitive short cycles of desaturation followed by rapid reoxygenation termed intermittent hypoxia (IH) is likely to play a significant role. There is increasing evidence that IH leads to a preferential activation of inflammatory over adaptive pathways. This promotes activation of various inflammatory cells, particularly lymphocytes and monocytes, with the downstream consequence of expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and adhesion molecules that may contribute to endothelial dysfunction. This review provides a critical analysis of the current evidence of inflammatory mechanisms initiated by IH that may contribute to the cardiovascular pathogenesis in OSAS.  相似文献

The microbial communities in solar salterns and a soda lake have been characterized using two techniques: BIOLOG, to estimate the metabolic potential, and amplicon length heterogeneity analysis, to estimate the molecular diversity of these communities. Both techniques demonstrated that the halophilic Bacteria and halophilic Archaea populations in the Eilat, Israel saltern are dynamic communities with extensive metabolic potentials and changing community structures. Halophilic Bacteria were detected in Mono Lake and the lower salinity ponds at the Shark Bay saltern in Western Australia, except when the crystallizer samples were stressed by exposure to Acid Green Dye #9899. At Shark Bay, halophilic Archaea were found only in the crystallizer samples. These data confirm both the metabolic diversity and the phylogenetic complexity of the microbial communities and assert the need to develop more versatile media for the cultivation of the diversity of bacteria in hypersaline environments. The epithelial sodium channel is a multimeric protein formed by three homologous subunits: α, β, and γ; each subunit contains only two transmembrane domains. The level of expression of each of the subunits is markedly different in various Na+ absorbing epithelia raising the possibility that channels with different subunit composition can function in vivo. We have examined the functional properties of channels formed by the association of α with β and of α with γ in the Xenopus oocyte expression system using two-microelectrode voltage clamp and patch-clamp techniques. We found that αβ channels differ from αγ channels in the following functional properties: (a) αβ channels expressed larger Na+ than Li+ currents (INa+/ILi+ 1.2) whereas αγ channels expressed smaller Na+ than Li+ currents (INa+/ILi+ 0.55); (b) the Michaelis Menten constants (K m) of activation of current by increasing concentrations of external Na+ and Li+ of αβ channels were larger (K m > 180 mM) than those of αγ channels (K m of 35 and 50 mM, respectively); (c) single channel conductances of αβ channels (5.1 pS for Na+ and 4.2 pS for Li+) were smaller than those of αγ channels (6.5 pS for Na+ and 10.8 pS for Li+); (d) the half-inhibition constant (K i) of amiloride was 20-fold larger for αβ channels than for αγ channels whereas the K i of guanidinium was equal for both αβ and αγ. To identify the domains in the channel subunits involved in amiloride binding, we constructed several chimeras that contained the amino terminus of the γ subunit and the carboxy terminus of the β subunit. A stretch of 15 amino acids, immediately before the second transmembrane domain of the β subunit, was identified as the domain conferring lower amiloride affinity to the αβ channels. We provide evidence for the existence of two distinct binding sites for the amiloride molecule: one for the guanidium moiety and another for the pyrazine ring. At least two subunits α with β or γ contribute to these binding sites. Finally, we show that the most likely stoichiometry of αβ and αγ channels is 1α:1β and 1α:1γ, respectively.  相似文献

A major challenge in controlling overabundant wildlife is monitoring their populations, particularly as they decline to very low density. Camera traps and wildlife detector dogs are increasingly being used for this purpose. We compared the cost-effectiveness of these two approaches for detecting feral cats (Felis catus) on two pastoral properties in Hawke's Bay, North Island, New Zealand. One property was subject to intensive pest removal, while the other had no recent history of pest control. Camera traps and wildlife detector dogs detected cats at similar rates at both sites. The operating costs of each method were also comparable. We identify a number of advantages and disadvantages of each technique, and suggest priorities for further research.  相似文献
