The growth of the maxillary complex of 36 rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively during four defined stages of postnatal development (i.e., infant, juvenile, adolescent, young adult). At each stage, growth was observed during a 24 week period. Since some animals were observed during two successive stages of development, 47 periods of growth were studied. The incremental growth data were collected by superimposing serial cephalograms on cranial base implants and on maxillary implants. The largest increments of growth were observed in the infant animals and were successively less during the other periods studied. The horizontal growth component was more prominent than the vertical component in all age groups. The contribution of sutural growth to the vertical displacement of the maxilla was greater posteriorly, leading to a rotation of the maxillary complex during growth. The occlusal relationship was maintained by selective bone remodeling in conjunction with dentitional migration. 相似文献

Taphonomic experiments provide important insights into fossils that preserve the remains of decay‐prone soft tissues, tissues that are usually degraded and lost prior to fossilization. These fossils are among the most scientifically valuable evidence of ancient life on Earth, giving us a view into the past that is much less biased and incomplete than the picture provided by skeletal remains alone. Although the value of taphonomic experiments is beyond doubt, a lack of clarity regarding their purpose and limitations, and ambiguity in the use of terminology, are hampering progress. Here we distinguish between processes that promote information retention and those that promote information loss, in order to clarify the distinction between fossilization and preservation. Recognizing distinct processes of decay, mineralization and maturation, the sequence in which they act, and the potential for interactions, has important consequences for analysis of fossils, and for the design of taphonomic experiments. The purpose of well‐designed taphonomic experiments is generally to understand decay, maturation and preservation individually, thus limiting the number of variables involved. Much work remains to be done, but these methodologically reductionist foundations will allow researchers to build towards more complex taphonomic experiments and a more holistic understanding and analysis of the interactions between decay, maturation and preservation in the fossilization of non‐biomineralized remains. Our focus must remain on the key issue of understanding what exceptionally preserved fossils reveal about the history of biodiversity and evolution, rather than on debating the scope and value of an experimental approach. 相似文献

The imprinted gene Cdkn1c is expressed exclusively from the maternally inherited allele as a consequences of epigenetic regulation. Cdkn1c exemplifies many of the functional characteristics of imprinted genes, playing a role in foetal growth and placental development. However, Cdkn1c also plays an important role in the brain, being key to the appropriate proliferation and differentiation of midbrain dopaminergic neurons. Using a transgenic model (Cdkn1cBACx1) with a twofold elevation in Cdkn1c expression that mimics loss‐of‐imprinting, we show that increased expression of Cdkn1c in the brain gives rise to neurobiological and behavioural changes indicative of a functionally altered dopaminergic system. Cdkn1cBACX1 mice displayed altered expression of dopamine system‐related genes, increased tyrosine hydroxylase (Th) staining and increased tissue content of dopamine in the striatum. In addition, Cdkn1cBACx1 animals were hypersensitive to amphetamine as showed by c‐fos expression in the nucleus accumbens. Cdkn1cBACX1 mice had significant changes in behaviours that are dependent on the mesolimbic dopaminergic system. Specifically, increased motivation for palatable food stuffs, as indexed on a progressive ratio task. In addition, Cdkn1cBACX1 mice displayed enhanced social dominance. These data show, for the first time, the consequence of elevated Cdkn1c expression on dopamine‐related behaviours highlighting the importance of correct dosage of this imprinted gene in the brain. The effects of an anti-P-selectin monoclonal antibody (MAb, PB1.3; Cytel Corporation) on neoendothelialization; neoendothelial function, as evidenced by acetylcholine-induced relaxation (nitric oxide formation); and intimal hyperplasia following embolectomy catheter-induced injury to the rabbit thoracic aorta were investigated. Catheter injury was induced in two groups of New Zealand White rabbits. One group received no treatment, while the second group received short-term treatment with the MAb (i.p., immediately before and 12 h after induction of catheter injury). A third group underwent a sham operation and served as uninjured controls. Following sacrifice at 2 weeks after injury, aortic rings were assessed for degree of intimal hyperplasia, neoendothelial morphology (scanning electron microscopy), and acetylcholine-induced relaxation. Aortic tissue from catheter-injured animals that received treatment exhibited improved neoendothelial morphology, as compared with tissue from untreated but catheterized animals; however, no statistically significant attenuation of the hyperplastic response or improvement in the attenuated neoendothelial-dependent acetylcholine-induced relaxant response that is characteristic of neoendothelium that forms after catheter denudation was observed. These data suggest that short-term attenuation of P-selectin-mediated polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN)/endothelium, PMN/platelet interactions, and/or thrombin formation beneficially affects neoendothelialization of the vascular wall following balloon catheter-induced injury. 相似文献

The distribution of amiloride-sensitive sodium channels (ASSCs) in taste
buds isolated from the oral cavity of hamsters was assessed by patch clamp
recording. In contrast to the case for rats, taste cells from the
fungiform, foliate and vallate papillae and from the soft palate all
contain functional ASSCs. The differential distribution of ASSCs between
the hamster and the rat may be important for understanding the physiology
underlying the differing behavioral responses of these species to sodium
salts.

The rate at which mutant genes producing an epileptic phenotype in mice have been identified over the past few years has been astounding. Manipulating the genome of mice has led to identification of a diversity of genes whose absence or modification either causes epileptic seizures or, conversely, limits epileptogenesis. In addition, positional cloning of genes in which spontaneously arising mutations cause epilepsy in mice has led to the identification of genes encoding voltage- and ligand-gated ion channels. Finally, engineering a mutation that mimics a rare form of human epilepsy has led to a mouse line with a phenotype similar to that of the human disease. Taken together, these discoveries promise to shed light on the mechanisms underlying genetic control of neuronal excitability, suggest candidate genes underlying genetic forms of human epilepsy, and provide a valuable model with which to elucidate how the genotype produces the phenotype of a rare form of human epilepsy. 相似文献

Effects of nasal CPAP therapy on respiratory and spontaneous arousals in infants with OSA. 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in infants has been shown to resolve frequently without a cortical arousal. It is unknown whether infants do not require arousal to terminate apneas or whether this is a consequence of the OSA. We studied the apnea and arousal patterns of eight infants with OSA before and after treatment with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). These infants were age matched to eight untreated infants with OSA and eight normal infants. Polysomnographic studies were performed on each infant. We found that the majority of central and obstructive apneas were terminated without arousal in all OSA infants. After several weeks of nasal CPAP treatment, the proportion of apneas terminating with an arousal during rapid-eye-movement sleep increased in treated infants compared with untreated infants. Spontaneous arousals during rapid-eye-movement sleep were reduced in all OSA infants; however, during CPAP treatment, the spontaneous arousals increased to the normal control level. We conclude that OSA in infants possibly depresses the arousal response and treatment of these infants with nasal CPAP partially reverses this depression. 相似文献
