Locations of potential spawning areas for lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) were predicted in Lake Opeongo, Ontario, Canada using information gained via acoustic telemetry and geographic information system (GIS) technologies. From 1998 to 2000, 18 adult lake trout (mean fork length 553 mm) implanted with acoustic transmitters (battery life 2 years) were manually tracked. For evening fall locations within the erosive zone of the lake (determined using an existing sedimentation model), habitat variables (slope, depth, and effective fetch) were summarised using GIS. Sites selected by lake trout during the spawning window were in areas of mean fetch equal to 1.5 km and mean slope of 10.6% (n = 50 fixes). We used GIS to identify areas that matched the mean habitat criteria and thus locate potential spawning areas. This model correctly identified 19 of 21 known spawning sites, as well as additional sites used by spawning females in an earlier telemetry study. Depths of traditional fall netting sites are shallow compared to areas in which telemetered lake trout were found during evenings of the spawning period (means 3.1 vs. 5.1 m, respectively). Through the use of information on spawning habitat selection gained through telemetry and knowledge of the physical characteristics of the lake, we provide an alternative means of identifying potential spawning habitat for lake trout.  相似文献

Swimming ability of wild brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis , brown trout Salmo trutta , anadromous Atlantic salmon Salmo salar , and landlocked Atlantic salmon was examined using fixed and increasing velocity tests. Although brook trout and salmon parr were collected from the same site, brook trout were found generally in slow-moving pools whereas salmon were more common in faster riffle areas. Salmon parr could hold station indefinitely in currents in which brook trout could only maintain themselves briefly. Therefore, selection of fast-water areas by salmon parr may impose a velocity barrier to sympatric juvenile brook trout, reducing competition between the species. Performance comparisons also indicate that anadromous Atlantic salmon possess slightly greater sustained ability than landlocked salmon, possibly due to altered selective pressure associated with their different life histories. Finally, fishways and culverts in Newfoundland can now be designed using models generated from performance data collected from native salmonid species.  相似文献

Advances in scientific computing have allowed the development of complex models that are being routinely applied to problems in disease epidemiology, public health and decision making. The utility of these models depends in part on how well they can reproduce empirical data. However, fitting such models to real world data is greatly hindered both by large numbers of input and output parameters, and by long run times, such that many modelling studies lack a formal calibration methodology. We present a novel method that has the potential to improve the calibration of complex infectious disease models (hereafter called simulators). We present this in the form of a tutorial and a case study where we history match a dynamic, event-driven, individual-based stochastic HIV simulator, using extensive demographic, behavioural and epidemiological data available from Uganda. The tutorial describes history matching and emulation. History matching is an iterative procedure that reduces the simulator''s input space by identifying and discarding areas that are unlikely to provide a good match to the empirical data. History matching relies on the computational efficiency of a Bayesian representation of the simulator, known as an emulator. Emulators mimic the simulator''s behaviour, but are often several orders of magnitude faster to evaluate. In the case study, we use a 22 input simulator, fitting its 18 outputs simultaneously. After 9 iterations of history matching, a non-implausible region of the simulator input space was identified that was times smaller than the original input space. Simulator evaluations made within this region were found to have a 65% probability of fitting all 18 outputs. History matching and emulation are useful additions to the toolbox of infectious disease modellers. Further research is required to explicitly address the stochastic nature of the simulator as well as to account for correlations between outputs.  相似文献

Microbial biomass and activity were examined in four different arctic sediments: littoral lake sediment and profundal lake sediment from Toolik Lake, Alaska, thaw pond sediment, and eroding river bank peat. The thaw pond sediment had the largest viable microbial biomass, while the profundal sediment had the smallest. Rates of glucose or acetate incorporation into lipids, glucose mineralization, and lignocellulose mineralization (all normalized per unit of biomass) were highest in the river peat sample, however. The kinetics of glucose mineralization in the profundal sediment were very different from those in the other three samples: although the initial rate of mineralization was five times lower than that in the peat and two times lower than that in the littoral and thaw pond sediments, the maximum amount of 14CO2 evolved from [14C]glucose eventually equaled that in the peat and exceeded that in the littoral and thaw pond sediments by 2.0 and 3.5 times, respectively. Carex aquatilis [14C-cellulose]- and [14C-lignin]lignocellulose mineralization rates in the profundal sediment equaled or exceeded those in the littoral sediment after 16 and 46 days, but the pattern of nutrient limitation differed: the profundal sediment was the only one sampled that exhibited nitrogen limitation, while the other three sediments appeared to be limited primarily by phosphorus. The addition of nitrogen and phosphorus together had no cumulative effects on lignocellulose mineralization. When the rates of mineralization or incorporation of glucose are compared with those of lignocellulose, the results of this study indicate that profundal sediment communities may be better able to utilize the more recalcitrant substrates relative to the labile substrates than microbial communities from sediments rich in detritus and standing macrophytes.  相似文献

We raised a polyclonal antibody against a decapeptide corresponding to the carboxyl terminus of the rat angiotensin II AT1 receptor. This antibody was demonstrated to be specific for the rat receptor according to a number of approaches. These included (a) the ultrastructural localization of immunogold-labeled receptor on the surfaces of zona glomerulosa cells in the adrenal cortex, (b) the specific labeling of Chinese hamster ovarian (CHO) cells transfected with AT1 receptors, (c) the identification of a specific band on Western blots, (d) the immunocytochemical co-localization of angiotensin receptors on neurons in the lamina terminalis of the brain shown to be responsive to circulating angiotensin II, as shown by the expression of c-fos, and (e) the correlation between the expression of the mRNA of the AT1 receptor and AT1 receptor immunoreactivity.(J Histochem Cytochem 47:507-515, 1999)  相似文献
