To better identify biodiversity hotspots for conservation on Hainan Island, a tropical island in southern China, we assessed spatial variation in phylogenetic diversity and species richness using 18,976 georeferenced specimen records and a newly reconstructed molecular phylogeny of 957 native woody plants. Within this framework, we delineated bioregions based on vegetation composition and mapped areas of neoendemism and paleoendemism to identify areas of priority for conservation. Our results reveal that the southwest of Hainan is the most important hot spot for endemism and plant diversity followed by the southeast area. The distribution of endemic species showed a scattered, rather than clustered, pattern on the island. Based on phylogenetic range‐weighted turnover metrics, we delineated three major vegetational zones in Hainan. These largely correspond to natural secondary growth and managed forests (e.g., rubber and timber forests) in central Hainan, old‐growth forests and natural secondary growth forest at the margins of Hainan, and nature reserves on the island (e.g., Jianfeng and Diaoluo National Nature Reserves). Increasingly, applications need to be able to self-reconfigure in response to changing requirements and environmental conditions. Autonomic computing has been proposed as a means for automating software maintenance tasks. As the complexity of adaptive and autonomic systems grows, designing and managing the set of reconfiguration rules becomes increasingly challenging and may produce inconsistencies. This paper proposes an approach to leverage genetic algorithms in the decision-making process of an autonomic system. This approach enables a system to dynamically evolve target reconfigurations at run time that balance tradeoffs between functional and non-functional requirements in response to changing requirements and environmental conditions. A key feature of this approach is incorporating system and environmental monitoring information into the genetic algorithm such that specific changes in the environment automatically drive the evolutionary process towards new viable solutions. We have applied this genetic-algorithm based approach to the dynamic reconfiguration of a collection of remote data mirrors, demonstrating an effective decision-making method for diffusing data and minimizing operational costs while maximizing data reliability and network performance, even in the presence of link failures. 相似文献

Background
Chromosomal orthologs can reveal the shared ancestral gene set and their evolutionary trends. Additionally, physico-chemical properties of encoded proteins could provide information about functional adaptation and ecological niche requirements.Results
We analyzed 7080 genes (five groups of 1416 orthologs each) from Rhizobiales species (S. meliloti, R. etli, and M. loti, plant symbionts; A. tumefaciens, a plant pathogen; and B. melitensis, an animal pathogen). We evaluated their phylogenetic relationships and observed three main topologies. The first, with closer association of R. etli to A. tumefaciens; the second with R. etli closer to S. meliloti; and the third with A. tumefaciens and S. meliloti as the closest pair. This was not unusual, given the close relatedness of these three species. We calculated the synonymous (dS) and nonsynonymous (dN) substitution rates of these orthologs, and found that informational and metabolic functions showed relatively low dN rates; in contrast, genes from hypothetical functions and cellular processes showed high dN rates. An alternative measure of sequence variability, percentage of changes by species, was used to evaluate the most specific proportion of amino acid residues from alignments. When dN was compared with that measure a high correlation was obtained, revealing that much of evolutive information was extracted with the percentage of changes by species at the amino acid level. By analyzing the sequence variability of orthologs with a set of five properties (polarity, electrostatic charge, formation of secondary structures, molecular volume, and amino acid composition), we found that physico-chemical characteristics of proteins correlated with specific functional roles, and association of species did not follow their typical phylogeny, probably reflecting more adaptation to their life styles and niche preferences. In addition, orthologs with low dN rates had residues with more positive values of polarity, volume and electrostatic charge.Conclusions
These findings revealed that even when orthologs perform the same function in each genomic background, their sequences reveal important evolutionary tendencies and differences related to adaptation. Egg strings and larvae of Hochstetter's frog (Leiopelma hochstetteri) were located at three widely separated North Island sites: in seeps at Brynderwyns in December 2004, in an open pool at Wharerino in March 2009, and in an underground pool near the Kaipawa Track, Coromandel, in late May 2009. Ten egg strings were also laid by captive frogs in water courses at Hamilton Zoo in April 2009. All egg strings held from 11 to 13 eggs. The egg strings laid in the Brynderwyns were regularly observed until metamorphosis was completed in March 2005. Twenty-four swimming larvae emerged from 25 capsules at c. 40 days after discovery, and at least 14 froglets were produced at c. 90 days. All of them developed in darkness, in a 120 ml pool <30 mm deep. The emerged froglets ranged from 9.8 to 10.8 mm snout-vent length. The detection of eggs, larvae and <11 mm froglets indicates that the egg laying period is at least from late September to May. 相似文献

The pattern of regional brain activation in humans during thirst associated with dehydration, increased blood osmolality, and decreased blood volume is not known. Furthermore, there is little information available about associations between activation in osmoreceptive brain regions such as the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis and the brain regions implicated in thirst and its satiation in humans. With the objective of investigating the neuroanatomical correlates of dehydration and activation in the ventral lamina terminalis, this study involved exercise-induced sweating in 15 people and measures of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) using a functional magnetic resonance imaging technique called pulsed arterial spin labeling. Regional brain activations during dehydration, thirst, and postdrinking were consistent with the network previously identified during systemic hypertonic infusions, thus providing further evidence that the network is involved in monitoring body fluid and the experience of thirst. rCBF measurements in the ventral lamina terminalis were correlated with whole brain rCBF measures to identify regions that correlated with the osmoreceptive region. Regions implicated in the experience of thirst were identified including cingulate cortex, prefrontal cortex, striatum, parahippocampus, and cerebellum. Furthermore, the correlation of rCBF between the ventral lamina terminalis and the cingulate cortex and insula was different for the states of thirst and recent drinking, suggesting that functional connectivity of the ventral lamina terminalis is a dynamic process influenced by hydration status and ingestive behavior. 相似文献

Both instability and residual articular incongruity are implicated in the development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (OA) following intra-articular fracture, but currently no information exists regarding cartilage stresses for unstable residual incongruities. In this study, a transversely isotropic poroelastic cartilage finite element model was implemented and validated within physiologically relevant loading ranges. This material model was then used to simulate the loading of cartilage during stable and unstable motion accompanying a step-off incongruity residual from intra-articular fracture, using load data from previous cadaver tests of ankle instability. Peak solid-phase stresses and fluid pressure were found to increase markedly in the presence of instability. Solid-phase transients of normal stress increased from 2.00 to 13.8 MPa/s for stable compared to unstable motion, and tangential stress transients increased from 17.1 to 118.1 MPa/s. Corresponding fluid pressure transients increased from 15.1 to 117.9 MPa/s for unstable motion. In the most rapidly loaded sections of cartilage, the fluid was found to carry nearly all of the normal load, with the pressurization of the fluid resulting in high solid matrix tangential stresses. 相似文献

Over the last three decades, experiments in several mammalian species have shown that the febrile response to bacterial endotoxin is attenuated late in pregnancy. More recent evidence has established that the expression of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes is increased in the brain late in pregnancy. The current study investigated the possible role of brain nitric oxide in mediating the phenomenon of fever suppression. Core body temperature (Tb) of near-term pregnant rats (day 19 and 20) was measured following inhibition of brain NOS and intraperitoneal injection of LPS (50 microg/kg); they were compared with both day 15 pregnant and virgin animals. Intracerebroventricular injection with an inhibitor of NOS, NG-monomethyl-L-arginine citrate (L-NMMA; 280 microg), in near-term pregnant rats restored the febrile response to LPS. As expected, near-term dams that received intracerebroventricular vehicle + IP LPS did not increase Tb, in contrast to the 1.0 +/- 0.2 degrees C rise in Tb in dams treated with ICV L-NMMA + IP LPS (P < 0.01). In virgin females and day 15 pregnant controls receiving this treatment, the increases in Tb were 1.5 +/- 0.3 degrees C and 1.6 +/- 0.4 degrees C, respectively. Thus, blockade of brain NOS restored the febrile response to LPS in near-term dams; at 5 h postinjection, Tb was 60-70% of that observed in virgins and day 15 pregnant animals. Intracerebroventricular L-NMMA alone did not induce a significant change in Tb in any group. These results suggest that the mechanism underlying the suppression of the febrile response in near-term pregnancy is mediated by nitric oxide signaling in the brain. 相似文献
