The genus Diplodus presents multiple cases of taxonomic conjecture. Among these the D. cervinus complex was previously described as comprising three subspecies that are now regarded as separate species: Diplodus cervinus, Diplodus hottentotus and Diplodus omanensis. Diplodus hottentotus exhibits a clear break in its distribution around the Benguela Current system, prompting speculation that Angolan and South African populations flanking this area may be isolated and warrant formal taxonomic distinction. This study reports the first integrated genetic [mitochondrial (mt)DNA and nuclear microsatellite] and morphological (morphometric, meristic and colouration) study to assess patterns of divergence between populations in the two regions. High levels of cytonuclear divergence between the populations support a prolonged period of genetic isolation, with the sharing of only one mtDNA haplotype (12 haplotypes were fully sorted between regions) attributed to retention of ancestral polymorphism. Fish from the two regions were significantly differentiated at a number of morphometric (69·5%) and meristic (46%) characters. In addition, Angolan and South African fish exhibited reciprocally diagnostic colouration patterns that were more similar to Mediterranean and Indian Ocean congeners, respectively. Based on the congruent genetic and phenotypic diversity we suggest that the use of hottentotus, whether for full species or subspecies status, should be restricted to South African D. cervinus to reflect their status as a distinct species‐like unit, while the relationship between Angolan and Atlantic–Mediterranean D. cervinus will require further demo‐genetic analysis. Non-crystalline silica mineraloids are essential to life on Earth as they provide architectural structure to dominant primary producers, such as plants and phytoplankton, as well as to protists and sponges. Due to the difficulty in characterizing and quantifying the structure of highly disordered X-ray amorphous silica, relatively little has been done to understand the mineralogy of biogenic silica and how this may impact the material properties of biogenic silica, such as hardness and strength, or how biosilica might be identified and differentiated from its inorganic geological counterparts. Typically, geologically formed opal-A and hyalite opal-AN are regarded as analogs to biogenic silica, however, some spectroscopic and imaging studies suggest that this might not be a reasonable assumption. In this study, we use a variety of techniques (X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy) to compare differences in structural disorder and bonding environments of geologically formed hydrous silicas (Opal-A, hyalite, geyserite) and silica glass versus biogenic silicas from an array of organisms. Our results indicate differences in the levels of structural disorder and the Raman-observed bonding environments of the SiO2 network modes (D1 mode) and the Q-species modes (~1015 cm−1) between varieties of biogenic silicas and geologically formed silicas, which aligns with previous studies that suggest fundamental differences between biogenic and geologically formed silica. Biosilicas also differ structurally from one another by species of organism. Our mineralogical approach to characterizing biosilicas and differentiating them from other silicas may be expanded to future diagenesis studies, and potentially applied to astrobiology studies of Earth and other planets. 相似文献

Captive reproduction of the Burmese brown tortoise (Geochelone emys) has occurred repeatedly over a five-year period in the Honolulu Zoo. Maximum clutch size (51 eggs) exceeds that reported for other members of the Testudinidae. Nesting behavior in G emys includes construction of a large leaf-litter mound. Collection of nest-building material is accomplished by “back-sweeping” of ground litter within a distance of up to 4 m from the nest site. The nesting female assumes a “nest-guarding” behavior for a period of 2–3 days following egg laying. Eggs incubated artificially hatched in 63–84 days, with egg fertility at 78–84%. One hundred and three G emys were successfully hatched and reared during the period 1978–82. A colony of endangered Madagascar angulated tortoises (Geochelone yniphora) have been maintained at the Honolulu Zoo since 1971. Courtship and mating behavior is similar to that described for the consubgeneric G radiata. Distinctive male “hooking” behavior during courtship in G yniphora is related to the exaggerated epiplastron development in this species. Egg laying has occurred repeatedly in the G yniphora colony since 1979 (mean clutch size = 4.2; N = 6) although no eggs have yet proved fertile. 相似文献

The vertebrate retinoid X receptor (RXR) has been implicated in the regulation of multiple hormonal signaling pathways through the formation of heteromeric receptor complexes that bind DNA with high affinity. We now demonstrate that ultraspiracle (usp), a Drosophila RXR homolog, can substitute for RXR in stimulating the DNA binding of receptors for retinoic acid, T3, vitamin D, and peroxisome proliferator activators. These observations led to the search and ultimate identification of the ecdysone receptor (EcR) as a Drosophila partner of usp. Together, usp and EcR bind DNA in a highly cooperative fashion. Cotransfection of both EcR and usp expression vectors is required to render cultured mammalian cells ecdysone responsive. These results implicate usp as an integral component of the functional EcR. By demonstrating that receptor heterodimer formation precedes the divergence of vertebrate and invertebrate lineages, these data underscore a central role for RXR and its homolog usp in the evolution and control of the nuclear receptor-based endocrine system. 相似文献

The 73AD salivary chromosome region of Drosophila melanogaster was subjected to mutational analysis in order to (1) generate a collection of chromosome breakpoints that would allow a correlation between the genetic, cytological and molecular maps of the region and (2) define the number and gross organization of complementation groups within this interval. Eighteen complementation groups were defined and mapped to the 73A2-73B7 region, which is comprised of 17 polytene bands. These complementation groups include the previously known scarlet (st), transformer (tra) and Dominant temperature-sensitive lethal-5 (DTS-5) genes, as well as 13 new recessive lethal complementation groups and one male and female sterile locus. One of the newly identified lethal complementation groups corresponds to the molecularly identified abl locus, and another gene is defined by mutant alleles that exhibit an interaction with the abl mutants. We also recovered several mutations in the 73C1-D1.2 interval, representing two lethal complementation groups, one new visible mutant, plucked (plk), and a previously known visible, dark body (db). 1. Utilization of 5mM-glucose by slices of lactating mammary gland was decreased 33% on addition of acetoacetate (2mM) to the incubation medium. This inhibition was accompanied by increases in the intracellular concentrations of citrate and glucose 6-phosphate. 2. In the presence of acetoacetates the accumulation of pyruvate in the medium approximately doubled. 3. Insulin completely reversed the inhibitory effect of acetoacetates on glucose utilization, without altering the amount of acetoacetate removed or pyruvate formed. 4. Similar results were obtained with mammary-gland slices from diabetic rats, except that insulin did not completely reverse the effects of acetoacetates. 5. Acetoacetate inhibited the formation of 14CO2 from [1-14C]pyruvate; this effect was not overcome by insulin. 6. Insulin increased the proportion of [3-14C]acetoacetate that was converted into lipid and decreased that oxidized to CO2.7. The physiological significance of these findings is discussed. 相似文献
