The first Australian record of the lily thrips, Liothrips vaneeckei Priesner, is reported from a bulb farm in Warragul South, Victoria. It is an occasional pest of Lilium bulbs, both in the field and in storage, particularly in the USA and several European countries, and is also infrequently found in considerable numbers on the corms of orchids.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of the secretory cells of the adenohypophysis of juvenile sockeye salmon was investigated. Pituitary glands were collected from immature fish transferred experimentally to sea water and subsequently returned to fresh water. The rostral pars distalis contained three cell types: ACTH cells, prolactin cells, and non-secretory cells. The prolactin and non-secretory cells were joined together in the form of follicles by desmosomes and they both had cilia and microvilli projecting into the follicle lumen. Various follicular structures such as lumen, multivesicular structures, and peripheral basement membrane are discussed as possible sites of prolactin cell granule release. The columnar ACTH cells were found at the junction of the rostral pars distalis and the neurohypophysis. The cytoplasmic granules in these cells were characteristically separated from their limiting membrane by a clear space. Multivesicular structures were also found in association with this cell type. The caudal pars distalis also contained three cell types: one acidophil (putative somatotrop) and two basophils (putative thyrotrops and gonadotrops), all of which were similar to those described in adult fish. The pars intermedia contained only one cell type. They appeared to be active cells and were characterized by containing membrane-bounded granules similar to those found in the ACTH cells. Changes in ambient salinity had no apparent effect on any cell type described.The work was supported by a grant in aid of research from the National Research Council of Canada. Daily blood samples over a fifteen day period were obtained from two adult female black-tailed deer and circulating levels of progesterone, estrogens, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and prolactin were measured by radioimmunoassay. LH levels showed an apogee at the time when there was observed estrous behaviour. The length of the estrous cycle appeared to be 7 days. Progesterone levels peaked just subsequent to the LH peak. High estrogen levels coincided with high progesterone and prolactin levels. FSH reached maximum levels prior to peak estrogen levels. LH and FSH levels reached maxima on different days. There were two steroid peaks between the LH apogees.  相似文献

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) was originally identified for its ability to inhibit the random migration of macrophages in vitro. MIF is now recognized as an important mediator in a range of inflammatory disorders. We recently observed that the absence of MIF is associated with a reduction in leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions induced by a range of inflammatory mediators, suggesting that one mechanism whereby MIF acts during inflammatory responses is by promoting leukocyte recruitment. However, it is unknown whether MIF is capable of inducing leukocyte recruitment independently of additional inflammatory stimuli. In this study, we report that MIF is capable of inducing leukocyte adhesion and transmigration in postcapillary venules in vivo. Moreover, leukocytes recruited in response to MIF were predominantly CD68(+) cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage. Abs against the monocyte-selective chemokine CCL2 (JE/MCP-1) and its receptor CCR2, but not CCL3 and CXCL2, significantly inhibited MIF-induced monocyte adhesion and transmigration. CCL2(-/-) mice displayed a similar reduction in MIF-induced recruitment indicating a critical role of CCL2 in the MIF-induced response. This hypothesis was supported by findings that MIF induced CCL2 release from primary microvascular endothelial cells. These data demonstrate a previously unrecognized function of this pleiotropic cytokine: induction of monocyte migration into tissues. This function may be critical to the ability of MIF to promote diseases such as atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, in which macrophages are key participants.  相似文献

Non-crystalline silica mineraloids are essential to life on Earth as they provide architectural structure to dominant primary producers, such as plants and phytoplankton, as well as to protists and sponges. Due to the difficulty in characterizing and quantifying the structure of highly disordered X-ray amorphous silica, relatively little has been done to understand the mineralogy of biogenic silica and how this may impact the material properties of biogenic silica, such as hardness and strength, or how biosilica might be identified and differentiated from its inorganic geological counterparts. Typically, geologically formed opal-A and hyalite opal-AN are regarded as analogs to biogenic silica, however, some spectroscopic and imaging studies suggest that this might not be a reasonable assumption. In this study, we use a variety of techniques (X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy) to compare differences in structural disorder and bonding environments of geologically formed hydrous silicas (Opal-A, hyalite, geyserite) and silica glass versus biogenic silicas from an array of organisms. Our results indicate differences in the levels of structural disorder and the Raman-observed bonding environments of the SiO2 network modes (D1 mode) and the Q-species modes (~1015 cm−1) between varieties of biogenic silicas and geologically formed silicas, which aligns with previous studies that suggest fundamental differences between biogenic and geologically formed silica. Biosilicas also differ structurally from one another by species of organism. Our mineralogical approach to characterizing biosilicas and differentiating them from other silicas may be expanded to future diagenesis studies, and potentially applied to astrobiology studies of Earth and other planets.  相似文献

The neurexins are a large family of neuronal cell-surface proteins believed to be involved in intercellular signalling and the formation of intercellular junctions. To begin to assess the role of these proteins in the olfactory bulb, we describe here the expression patterns of their transmembrane and secreted ligands, the neuroligins and neurexophilins, during both embryonic and postnatal development. In situ hybridisation showed that neuroligin 1 and 2 were expressed by second order mitral cells during early postnatal development but not in adults. The secreted ligand for alpha-neurexin, neurexophilin 1, was also expressed in the postnatal olfactory bulb. Neurexophilin 1 was detected in only periglomerular cells during the early postnatal period of glomerular formation but later was also expressed in mitral cells. These results suggest that neurexin-ligand interactions may be important for development and/or maturation of synaptic connections in the primary olfactory pathway.  相似文献
