Deakin (1967b) suggested that flow of blood might obey a law of minimal energy dissipation. The present paper presents a simpler derivation of Deakin’s equations pointing out several previously unrecognized features. It is shown that these equations are unlikely to be applicable. In particular, the solution obtained by Deakin and Jones (1968) does not yield a true minimum for energy dissipation. The solution for which energy dissipation is actually minimized is shown to possess features which render it unlikely to apply to a real flow.  相似文献

We aimed to quantify if and to what extent permanent incisor wear affected mohair production in adult Angora castrate goats. The goats were grazed on annual temperate pastures for 6 years. During their sixth year mohair was harvested every 6 months and liveweight measured. Incisors were inspected at age 6 years and the amount and pattern of wear quantified. Restricted maximum likelihood (REML) base models were developed to account for background sources of variation. Once a base model had been selected for each fleece attribute, an extra term for the linear effect of the first and other permanent incisor wear were added to the model. During the year mean liveweight, greasy mohair production, clean mohair production and mean fibre diameter were (S.D.): 55.6 (5.85) kg, 4.97 (1.00) kg, 4.16 (0.87) kg, 34.8 (4.02) μm. Mean wear on permanent first incisors was 9% (range 0–30%). There was little wear on other permanent incisors. Greasy fleece weight, clean fleece weight, staple length and fleece entanglement were reduced significantly with increased wear of first permanent incisors. There were no significant effects of incisor wear detected for nine other fleece attributes or liveweight. The results indicate that 30% wear of the permanent first incisors reduced greasy fleece production by 20% and reduced clean fleece production by 30%. Given the magnitude of the effects detected it is clear that relatively small amounts of wear of permanent incisors in adult Angora goats reduce production of mohair and consequently will reduce financial returns from mohair sales. The clear implication is that managers of mohair producing enterprises should assess the incisors of adult Angora goats and use this information in determining which animals to cull from their flocks.  相似文献

The content and distribution of several regulatory peptides in the skin of cats and pigs, freshly obtained at surgery, have been investigated. Immunoreactive bombesin was evenly distributed at low concentrations in both species, being below the detection limit in the body and nose of the cat, and showing a peak value of 1.6 +/- 0.7 pmol/g in the tip of the pig's ear. Similar concentrations of somatostatin-immunoreactivity (-IR) were found but greater regional variation occurred in the pig with a low in the mid back of 0.4 +/- 0.1 and the highest value in the snout of 3.1 +/- 0.8. Substance-P-IR in the pig showed a marked variation in concentration, apparently parallelling skin sensitivity, with a low in the back of 0.4 +/- 0.7 and higher values around the anus (8.1 +/- 1.6), legs (6.8 +/- 1.8) and snout (13.5 +/- 3.6) whilst in the cat values ranged from 0.3 +/- 0.06 in the body to 5.0 +/- 0.9 in the front footpads. In contrast, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-IR showed greater variability in the cat, being below the assay's detection in the body and highest in the front and rear footpads (17 +/- 7 and 29 +/- 6 respectively), but in the pig most regions exhibited low concentrations with the exception of the snout which peaked at 12.0 +/- 5.0. Immunocytochemical localisation showed the peptides to be present in nerve fibres. Substance-P-IR was particularly localised in the snout of the pig just below the epithelium while VIP-IR was more concentrated in deeper layers, often associated with sweat glands and blood vessels.  相似文献

Forestry management worldwide has become increasingly effective at obtaining high timber yields from productive forests. In New Zealand, a focus on improving an increasingly successful and largely Pinus radiata plantation forestry model over the last 150 years has resulted in some of the most productive timber forests in the temperate zone. In contrast to this success, the full range of forested landscapes across New Zealand, including native forests, are impacted by an array of pressures from introduced pests, diseases, and a changing climate, presenting a collective risk of losses in biological, social and economic value. As the national government policies incentivise reforestation and afforestation, the social acceptability of some forms of newly planted forests is also being challenged. Here, we review relevant literature in the area of integrated forest landscape management to optimise forests as nature-based solutions, presenting ‘transitional forestry’ as a model design and management paradigm appropriate to a range of forest types, where forest purpose is placed at the heart of decision making. We use New Zealand as a case study region, describing how this purpose-led transitional forestry model can benefit a cross section of forest types, from industrialised forest plantations to dedicated conservation forests and a range of multiple-purpose forests in between. Transitional forestry is an ongoing multi-decade process of change from current ‘business-as-usual’ forest management to future systems of forest management, embedded across a continuum of forest types. This holistic framework incorporates elements to enhance efficiencies of timber production, improve overall forest landscape resilience, and reduce some potential negative environmental impacts of commercial plantation forestry, while allowing the ecosystem functioning of commercial and non-commercial forests to be maximised, with increased public and biodiversity conservation value. Implementation of transitional forestry addresses tensions that arise between meeting climate mitigation targets and improving biodiversity criteria through afforestation, alongside increasing demand for forest biomass feedstocks to meet the demands of near-term bioenergy and bioeconomy goals. As ambitious government international targets are set for reforestation and afforestation using both native and exotic species, there is an increasing opportunity to make such transitions via integrated thinking that optimises forest values across a continuum of forest types, while embracing the diversity of ways in which such targets can be reached.  相似文献
