A series of experiments investigated masculine response potential in normal BDF1 female mice and in females who had been injected with 100 μg of testosterone propionate on the day of birth. Sixty-five percent of BDF1 females mounted females in estrus; ovariectomy lowered this response potential while injections of TP in adulthood raised masculine RP in both ovariectomized and intact females. Neonatally androgenized females with or without TP in adulthood exhibited the full range of masculine responses including the ejaculatory reflex. Comparisons of elements of sexual behavior are made between neonatally androgenized females and normal males.  相似文献

Aim

Temperate tree species overwhelmingly responded to past climate change by migrating rather than adapting. However, past climate change did not have the modern human‐driven patterns of land use and fragmentation, raising questions of whether tree migration will still be able to keep pace with climate. Previous studies using coarse‐grained or randomized landscapes suggest that dispersal may be delayed but have not identified outright barriers to migration. Here, we use real‐world fragmented landscapes at the scale of forest stands to assess the migration capacity of eastern tree species.

Methods

We simulated dispersal over 100 years for 15 species common to the mid‐Atlantic region and that are predicted to gain suitable habitat in the northeast. In contrast to previous studies, we incorporated greater realism with species‐specific life histories and real‐world spatial configurations of anthropogenic land use. We used simulation results to calculate dispersal rates for each species and related these to predicted rates of species habitat shift.

Results

Our simulations suggest that land use in the human‐dominated east‐coast corridor slows species dispersal rates by 12–40% and may prevent keeping pace with climate. Species most impacted by anthropogenic land use were often those with the highest predicted species habitat shifts. We identified two major dispersal barriers, the Washington DC metropolitan area and central NY, that severely impeded tree migration.

Main conclusions

Patterns of anthropogenic land use not only slowed migration but also resulted in effective barriers to dispersal. These impacts were exacerbated by tree life histories, such as long ages to maturity and narrow dispersal kernels. Without intervention, the migration lags predicted here may lead to loss in biodiversity and ecosystem functions as current forest species decline, and may contribute to formation of novel communities.  相似文献

Despite being recognized as a promoter of diversity and a condition for local coexistence decades ago, the importance of intraspecific variance has been neglected over time in community ecology. Recently, there has been a new emphasis on intraspecific variability. Indeed, recent developments in trait-based community ecology have underlined the need to integrate variation at both the intraspecific as well as interspecific level. We introduce new T-statistics ('T' for trait), based on the comparison of intraspecific and interspecific variances of functional traits across organizational levels, to operationally incorporate intraspecific variability into community ecology theory. We show that a focus on the distribution of traits at local and regional scales combined with original analytical tools can provide unique insights into the primary forces structuring communities.  相似文献

Genetic analysis of yeast RAS1 and RAS2 genes   总被引:59,自引:0,他引:59  
We present a genetic analysis of RAS1 and RAS2 of S. cerevisiae, two genes that are highly homologous to mammalian ras genes. By constructing in vitro ras genes disrupted by selectable genes and introducing these by gene replacement into the respective ras loci, we have determined that neither RAS1 nor RAS2 are by themselves essential genes. However, ras1 - ras2 - spores of doubly heterozygous diploids are incapable of resuming vegetative growth. We have determined that RAS1 is located on chromosome XV, 7 cM from ade2 and 63 cM from his3; and RAS2 is located on chromosome XIV, 2 cM from met4 . We have also constructed by site-directed mutagenesis a missense mutant, RAS2val19 , which encodes valine in place of glycine at the nineteenth amino acid position, the same sort of missense mutation that is found in some transforming alleles of mammalian ras genes. Diploid yeast cells that contain this mutation are incapable of sporulating efficiently, even when they contain wild-type alleles.  相似文献

The use of electromyographic signals in the modeling of muscle forces and joint loads requires an assumption of the relationship between EMG and muscle force. This relationship has been studied for the trunk musculature and been shown to be predominantly non-linear, with more EMG producing less torque output at higher levels of activation. However, agonist-antagonist muscle co-activation is often substantial during trunk exertions, yet has not been adequately accounted for in determining such relationships. The purpose of this study was to revisit the EMG-moment relationship of the trunk recognizing the additional moment requirements necessitated due to antagonist muscle activity. Eight participants generated a series of isometric ramped trunk flexor and extensor moment contractions. EMG was recorded from 14 torso muscles, and the externally resisted moment was calculated. Agonist muscle moments (either flexor or extensor) were estimated from an anatomically detailed biomechanical model of the spine and fit to: the externally calculated moment alone; the externally calculated moment combined with the antagonist muscle moment. When antagonist activity was ignored, the EMG-moment relationship was found to be non-linear, similar to previous work. However, when accounting for the additional muscle torque generated by the antagonist muscle groups, the relationships became, in three of the four conditions, more linear. Therefore, it was concluded that antagonist muscle co-activation must be included when determining the EMG-moment relationship of trunk muscles and that previous impressions of non-linear EMG-force relationships should be revisited.  相似文献

Understanding and predicting how and why abundance varies is one of the central questions in ecology. One of the few consistent predictors of variation in abundance between species has been body mass, but the nature of this relationship has been contentious. Here I explore the relationship between body mass and abundance in birds of North America, using hierarchical partitioning of variance and regressions at taxonomic levels above the species. These analyses show that much variation in abundance is found across space, while a moderate amount of variation is found at the species/genus and also at the family/order level. However, body size and trophic level primarily vary at the family/order level, suggesting that mechanisms based on body size and energy should primarily explain only this moderate-sized, taxonomically conserved component of variation in abundance. Body size does explain more than 50% of the variation at this level (and almost 75% when trophic level is also included). This tighter relationship makes clear that energetic equivalence (slope = -3/4) sets an upper limit but does not describe the relationship between body mass and average abundance for birds of North America. Finally, I suggest that this hierarchical, multivariate approach should be used more often in macroecology.  相似文献

In marine ecosystems, primary productivity and consequently food availability for higher trophic levels are often strongly affected by the water temperature. Thus, differences in sea surface temperatures (SST) may lead to differences in the diet composition of predators, but this link is still unknown in many species. By combining GPS tracking and dive analyses on chick-rearing southern rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome) with stable isotope analyses and monitoring of chick growth rates and chick survival, we here attempted a comprehensive assessment of the effects of inter-annual environmental variability as indicated by SST and chlorophyll a (reflecting primary productivity) data. Inter-annual differences in environmental variables around our study colony on New Island, Falkland/Malvinas Islands, contradicted the general expectation, with higher chlorophyll a concentrations coinciding with higher spring SST in 2010/2011 compared to 2009/2010. Penguins foraged further away from the colony during guard and crèche in 2010/2011 compared to 2009/2010, while performing deeper dives in 2009/2010. Stable isotope mixing models suggested a crustacean-dominated chick diet in 2009/2010, compared to a mixture of squid and fish in 2010/2011. These differences in foraging behaviour and diet, however, had no consequences for chick growth rates or chick survival and thus had no apparent effect on population trajectories. Potentially, environmental conditions in both years could still be seen as favourable compared to other years and breeding sites, enabling the parental birds to buffer the environmental differences by plastic foraging behaviour.  相似文献

Intra-abdominal pressure mechanism for stabilizing the lumbar spine   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
Currently, intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) is thought to provide stability to the lumbar spine but the exact principles have yet to be specified. A simplified physical model was constructed and theoretical calculations performed to illustrate a possible intra-abdominal pressure mechanism for stabilizing the spine. The model consisted of an inverted pendulum with linear springs representing abdominal and erector spinae muscle groups. The IAP force was simulated with a pneumatic piston activated with compressed air. The critical load of the model was calculated theoretically based on the minimum potential energy principle and obtained experimentally by increasing weight on the model until the point of buckling. Two distinct mechanisms were simulated separately and in combination. One was antagonistic flexor extensor muscle coactivation and the second was abdominal muscle activation along with generation of IAP. Both mechanisms were effective in stabilizing the model of a lumbar spine. The critical load and therefore the stability of the spine model increased with either increased antagonistic muscle coactivation forces or increased IAP along with increased abdominal spring force. Both mechanisms were also effective in providing mechanical stability to the spine model when activated simultaneously. Theoretical calculation of the critical load agreed very well with experimental results (95.5% average error). The IAP mechanism for stabilizing the lumbar spine appears preferable in tasks that demand trunk extensor moment such as lifting or jumping. This mechanism can increase spine stability without the additional coactivation of erector spinae muscles.  相似文献
