It has been suggested that the biogeographic and clade-level characteristics of marine invertebrate groups important in survival through mass extinctions are different from those important in survival during normal times. The role played by ecologically important characters in survival across mass extinctions, however, has not been well-studied. We obtained information from the literature about the feeding mode and morphology, burrowing habits, size and depth below sea-level inhabited, temperature range, shell thickness, species richness and abundance of bivalve genera present in the Late Cretaceous of the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain of North America. Non-parametric analysis revealed that there were no significant associations between any of these characteristics and survival across the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary. This lack of selectivity may be due to varying local conditions, which favor different ecological characteristics in each area and produce no overall pattern of selectivity. It might also be indicative of the severity of this extinction on bivalves — differences in ecological habits may have been virtually irrelevant to survivorship through this event.  相似文献

Sodium butyrate (Btr) (3 mM) causes a 10-fold increase in production of the glycoprotein hormone alpha-subunit in HeLa cells. The following report demonstrates that this response could be inhibited about 95% by 5 mM 2-deoxy-D-glucose (dGlc), whereas alpha-subunit production in uninduced cells was affected little or not at all. Addition of D-mannose restored the Btr induction of Hela-alpha in cultures that had been treated with dGlc. When the alpha-subunits secreted by cells cultured in Btr plus dGlc or in Btr alone were compared by gel filtration (Sephadex G-75) and lectin affinity (concanavalin A and ricin) chromatography, differences were noted that probably reflect changes in their carbohydrate moieties. Immunoprecipitation of [35S]methionine-labeled HeLa-alpha and incubation with endoglycosidase H indicated that the subunit secreted from cells in the presence of dGlc contained oligosaccharide side chains that were not processed to the complex type. Cells that were simultaneously treated with Btr plus dGlc showed no increase in alpha-subunit production over cells receiving Btr only; in contrast, cells that were preincubated with Btr for either 16 or 36 h before dGlc was added exhibited high levels of subunit synthesis. Measurement of alpha-mRNA levels at various times after Btr and dGlc were added to cultures indicated that Btr brought about a dramatic increase in alpha-specific mRNA about 24 h after being added to cultures. This increase could be prevented by dGlc when added simultaneously with Btr but not when added after a 24-h preincubation. Although dGlc prevented the induction of alpha-subunit and alpha-mRNA in response to Btr, it had no effect on histone hyperacetylation, suggesting that if this chromatin modification is necessary for the induction process, it is not in itself sufficient. Together, the data demonstrate that dGlc inhibits the accumulation of alpha-subunit mRNA normally produced in response to Btr and that the subunit produced contains altered oligosaccharide constituents.  相似文献

Twenty-five lambs grazing a parasite-contaminated pasture were divided into four groups. One group of seven lambs were left untreated and three groups of six lambs each were treated with levamisole at 2 week, 3 week or 1 month intervals respectively. Body weights, fecal egg counts and packed cell volumes were determined every 2 weeks for 8 weeks. Lambs were then necropsied on the day they would have received another treatment, thus the maximum accumulation of parasites at each treatment frequency was measured. Treatment at 2 and 3 week intervals markedly suppressed fecal egg counts, but egg counts of sheep treated every month rose between treatments and untreated animals continually shed eggs. Treatment at all three frequencies provided only slight protection from blood loss, but it lessened weight loss. There was little difference between treatment groups in burdens of adult H. contortus, but burdens of T. axei and T. colubriformis and arrested larvae of H. contortus increased with decreasing frequency of treatment. The results support the findings of other workers that Trichostrongylus spp. have a long adult life span and continue to accumulate with time, whereas H. contortus may have a short adult life span and a rapid population turnover. In the face of constant reinfection, repeated anthelmintic treatment gives more protection from the effects of the long-lived parasites than from those with a rapid population turnover.  相似文献
