The interrelationship between sex skin swelling and the urinary excretion of luteinizing hormone and sex steroids was investigated during ovulatory menstrual cycles in adult female chimpanzees. Estrone was excreted in two peaks, one during the preovulatory and the other during the midluteal phase. Maximum swelling of the sex skin was attained several days before the preovulatory estrone peak. The LH surge preceded or accompanied beginning detumescence of the sex skin which, in turn, was closely correlated with a rising excretion of pregnanediol. Urinary measurements provide integrated estimates of the concentration of fluctuating hormones and, in addition, are safer and easier to make than blood measurements in this species. 相似文献

The effects of temperature on rates of mineralization of [14C]lignocellulose were investigated in water and sediment from a thermally impacted stream and from a nearby unimpacted swamp at the Savannah River Plant, South Carolina. The temperature optimum for lignocellulose mineralization remained near 35°C at the unimpacted site throughout the sampling period from November 1986 to May 1987. The temperature optimum for lignocellulose mineralization in the thermally impacted stream was near 45°C when thermal effluents from a nuclear reactor were released to the stream, and was near 35°C when the reactor was not operating. Microbial populations capable of rapidly degrading lignocellulose at higher temperatures (45–55°C) developed between 9 and 27 days under conditions of thermal stress, indicating that under favorable conditions thermophilic microorganisms became dominant components of the microbiota. Removal of thermal stress for periods of 75 days or less resulted in a collapse of the thermophilic degrading population. 相似文献

Background
In utero microinjection has proven valuable for exploring the developmental consequences of altering gene expression, and for studying cell lineage or migration during the latter half of embryonic mouse development (from embryonic day 9.5 of gestation (E9.5)). In the current study, we use ultrasound guidance to accurately target microinjections in the conceptus at E6.5–E7.5, which is prior to cardiovascular or placental dependence. This method may be useful for determining the developmental effects of targeted genetic or cellular interventions at critical stages of placentation, gastrulation, axis formation, and neural tube closure. 相似文献399.
The dynamic equilibrium hypothesis proposes that hybrid zones are stabilized by a balance between dispersal and selection against hybrids. A key prediction of this hypothesis is that hybrids should have lower fitness than either parental taxon, regardless of habitat. Hybrid big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata × ssp. vaseyana) in two narrow hybrid zones do show greatly decreased recruitment. Hybrids in one zone also show increased browsing by grasshoppers, while those in the other zone have increased numbers of aphids. Overall herbivore loads, however, are not greater on the hybrids than on the parental subspecies. Browsing by mule deer is greatest on ssp. vaseyana in both hybrid zones. Incidence of galls is also greatest on ssp. vaseyana in one hybrid zone. Moreover, browsing by Artemisia weevils is greatest on ssp. tridentata in one hybrid zone. Hybrids produce more flowers than either ssp. tridentata or ssp. vaseyana, while seed production rates of hybrids do not differ from those of the parental taxa. Finally, hybrid seeds germinate as well as those of ssp. tridentata and better than those of ssp. vaseyana. Thus, our data do not support the dynamic equilibrium hypothesis. 相似文献

A model is proposed for the early evolution of the coding mechanism. A primordial RNA embodies the functions of today's nucleic acids in a single molecule. The molecule is generated by successive rounds of self-priming and -templating. After proximity is assured by enclosure in a cell, the functions can be partitioned among more efficient specialized molecules. The prediction of sequence homologies in later forms prompted a search for matches between t- and r-RNAs. These are described. Their distributions offer clues to their origins. The existance of overlapping homologies indicates an approach to the reconstruction of an ancestral molecule. 相似文献
