Polyphenols and prevention of cardiovascular diseases   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Polyphenols are the most abundant dietary antioxidants and research on their role in the prevention of degenerative diseases has developed quickly over these last few years. This paper reviews the recent studies on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases by polyphenols, focusing on human studies. RECENT FINDINGS: A large number of recent intervention studies have shown that several biomarkers of cardiovascular risk are influenced by the consumption of polyphenol-rich foods. Effects on biomarkers of oxidative stress, lipemia and inflammation appear so far inconclusive. More consistent effects have been observed on endothelial function and haemostasis and support a reduction of risk by polyphenols in agreement with the few epidemiological studies already published. All clinical studies have used foods or beverages containing a mixture of different polyphenols and the exact nature of the most active compounds remains largely unknown. Absorption, metabolism and elimination vary widely between polyphenols. These data on bioavailability should be taken into account to improve the experimental design and the interpretation of the observed effects. SUMMARY: Future intervention studies should include a detailed assessment of the bioavailability of polyphenols. Beyond clinical trials carried out with polyphenol-rich foods, more studies with pure polyphenols will also be needed to establish their role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.  相似文献

According to the "protein only" hypothesis, a conformational conversion of the non-pathogenic "cellular" prion isoform into a pathogenic "scrapie" isoform is the fundamental event in the onset of prion diseases. During this pathogenic conversion, helix H1 and two adjacent surface loops L2 and L3 of the normal prion protein are thought to undergo a conformational transition into an extended beta-like structure, which is prompted by interactions with the pre-existing beta-sheet. To get more insight into the interaction between the helix and one of the beta-strands in the partially unfolded prion protein, the solution structure of a synthetic linear peptide spanning helix H1 and beta-strand S2 (residues 142-166 in human numbering) was studied by circular dichroism and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. We found that, in contrast to many prion fragments studied earlier, this peptide (i) is highly soluble and does not aggregate up to a millimolar concentration range in aqueous medium and (ii) exhibits an intrinsic propensity to a beta-hairpin like conformation at neutral pH. This beta-propensity can be one of the internal driving forces of the molecular rearrangement responsible for the pathogenic conversion of the prion protein.  相似文献

Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii produces an acidic exopolysaccharide (EPS) that is important for the induction of nitrogen-fixing nodules on clover. Recently, three genes, pssN, pssO, and pssP, possibly involved in EPS biosynthesis and polymerization were identified. The predicted protein product of the pssP gene shows a significant sequence similarity to other proteins belonging to the PCP2a family that are involved in the synthesis of high-molecular-weight EPS. An R. leguminosarum bv. trifolii TA1 mutant with the entire coding region of pssP deleted did not produce the EPS. A pssP mutant with the 5' end of the gene disrupted produced exclusively low-molecular-weight EPS. A mutant that synthesized a functional N-terminal periplasmic domain but lacked the C-terminal part of PssP produced significantly reduced amounts of EPS with a slightly changed low to high molecular form ratio. Mutants affected in the PssP protein carrying a stable plasmid with a constitutively expressed gusA gene induced nodules on red clover that were not fully occupied by bacteria. A mutant with the entire pssP gene deleted infected only a few plant cells in the nodule. The pssP promoter-gusA reporter fusion was active in bacteroids during nodule development.  相似文献

Understanding how individuals identify their relatives has implications for the evolution of social behaviour. Kinship cues might be based on familiarity, but in the face of paternity uncertainty and costly paternal investment, other mechanisms such as phenotypic matching may have evolved. In humans, paternal recognition of offspring and subsequent discriminative paternal investment have been linked to father–offspring facial phenotypic similarities. However, the extent to which paternity detection is impaired by environmentally induced facial information is unclear. We used 27 portraits of fathers and their adult sons to quantify the level of paternity detection according to experimental treatments that manipulate the location, type and quantity of visible facial information. We found that (i) the lower part of the face, that changes most with development, does not contain paternity cues, (ii) paternity can be detected even if relational information within the face is disrupted and (iii) the signal depends on the presence of specific information rather than their number. Taken together, the results support the view that environmental effects have little influence on the detection of paternity using facial similarities. This suggests that the cognitive dispositions enabling the facial detection of kinship relationships ignore genetic irrelevant facial information.  相似文献

A new model of the computerized encephalovolumeter (EVM.IR) is presented. Infrared light is used as an information carrier enabling to follow the dynamics of intracerebral equilibrium and blood flow disorders. The authors suggest that this model would help clinical examination in the acute cerebral flow failure, and increase better evaluation of the efficiency of drugs improving cerebral blood flow. It should also help to foresee the outcome and prognosis. A new model of EVM.IR and its programs require further constructional and experimental studies before the routine use at ICUs.  相似文献

Alternate exposure of the nitrogen-fixing blue-green alga Anabaena L-31 to acetylene in air and ambient atmosphere resulted in substantial enhancement in the rate of acetylene reduction activity. The stimulation occurred even when protein synthesis was inhibited in the dark or in the presence of rifampicin and chloramphenicol. Residual nitrogenase of ammonium chloride treated cultures also showed the stimulation effect. The results indicate that the stimulation is due to a substrate (acetylene) mediated alteration of the enzyme molecule and not due to fresh synthesis.  相似文献
