Nonsiblicidal behavior and the evolution of clutch size in bethylid wasps   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Parent-offspring conflict over clutch size may lead to siblicidal behavior between juveniles. In parasitoid wasps, selection for siblicide in small broods is predicted to produce a dearth of gregarious broods with few eggs. Here we document the clutch size distribution in the Bethylidae, a large family of aculeate parasitoids. Small gregarious clutches are the most common. Further data suggest that the most common gregarious clutches in the parasitoid Hymenoptera as a whole contain only a few eggs. Across bethylid species, both clutch size and wasp size increase with host size. Within genera clutch size is more closely related to host size, but between genera or larger clades wasp size is more closely related to host size. The volume of the emerging wasp brood does not depend on whether a species lays single- or multiple-egg clutches once host size is taken into account. These data suggest that clutch size in bethylid wasps is best described by traditional optimality models and that siblicide plays little role in this and possibly other families. We propose several ecological reasons for the rarity of siblicide in bethylids: ectoparasitism, idiobiosis, and a suite of characteristics associated with high within-brood relatedness.  相似文献

During the log phase of growth both the active, ouabain-sensitive K+ uptake, measured as 86Rb+, and the sodium and potassium ion-activated ATPase ((Na+ + K+)-ATPase) activity of SV40-transformed 3T3 cells were 2.5-and 5,5-fold higher, respectively, than in untransformed 3T3 cells. A similar higher active K+ uptake was found for Rous sarcoma virus and SV40-transformed baby hamster kidney cells compared with untransformed BHK cells. The active K+ uptake in SV403T3 and normal 3T3 cells decreased when the growth rate of both cell types diminished. Reduction in ouabain-sensitive ATP hydrolysis only occurred later, however, when appreciable decreases in cell viability were seen. Arrhenius plots of the (Na+ + K+)-ATPase activity of SV403T3 cells indicated a discontinuity at 24 degrees, whereas no similar discontinuity was indicated for 3T3 cells. The consequences of elevated K+ transport and (Na+ + K+)-ATPase activity in transformed cells and the possibility that the increased activity might be related to differences inphospholipid fatty acyl chain fluidity are discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of football equipment and running surface on sprint performance in NCAA Division II football players (n = 68). Players were timed in the 40-yd sprint on an indoor rubberized track (Day 1) and on an outdoor, natural-grass football field (Day 2) wearing either regulation football equipment or shorts and a T-shirt. Each player was assigned randomly to perform 2 trials under each condition on each surface, and the average of the 2 trials was used for analysis. Offensive backs, defensive backs, and linebackers were significantly faster than were offensive and defensive linemen in all trials, and subjects were collapsed into 2 groups, backs and linemen. Football equipment significantly impaired performance on the track (-2.8% +/- 1.7%) and the field (-2.9% +/- 1.8%). The increase in body mass due to the football equipment was significantly greater for backs (7.2% +/- 0.7%) than for linemen (6.5% +/- 1.0%), but produced a significantly greater impairment in sprint performance in linemen (-3.3% +/- 1.1%) as compared with backs (-2.5% +/- 1.5%). Sprint performance was significantly and equivalently impaired when running on grass (backs: -2.5 +/- 1.1%; linemen: -2.8 +/- 1.4%) as compared with the track. Thus, running a 40-yd sprint in football equipment on a natural grass field impairs performance by an average of 5.5% (+/- 2.3%) compared with running indoors with minimal apparel. Football equipment and running surface significantly impair sprint performance in college football players, the effect being greater in linemen than in backs, and is likely related to differences in muscle strength/power and body fat.  相似文献

The 2015 Canadian Weight Bias Summit disseminated the newest research advances and brought together 40 experts, stakeholders, and policy makers in various disciplines in health, education, and public policy to identify future research directions in weight bias. In this paper we aim to share the results of the Summit as well as encourage international and interdisciplinary research collaborations in weight bias reduction. Consensus emerged on six research areas that warrant further investigation in weight bias: costs, causes, measurement, qualitative research and lived experience, interventions, and learning from other models of discrimination. These discussions highlighted three key lessons that were informed by the Summit, namely: language matters, the voices of people living with obesity should be incorporated, and interdisciplinary stakeholders should be included.  相似文献

Ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase and ferredoxin from the cyanobacterium Anabaena PCC 7119 have been covalently cross-linked by incubation with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide. The covalent adduct, which shows a molecular mass consistent with a 1:1 stoichiometry of the two proteins, maintains nearly 60% of the NADPH-cytochrome c reductase activity of the enzyme saturated with ferredoxin and this value is considerably higher than when equimolar amounts of both proteins are assayed. No ternary complexes with Anabaena flavodoxin or horse heart cytochrome c were formed, suggesting that the binding site on the enzyme is the same for ferredoxin and flavodoxin and that ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase and cytochrome c bind at a common site on ferredoxin. In the noncovalent complex, titrated at pH 7, the oxidation-reduction potential of ferredoxin becomes 15 mV more negative and that of ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase 27 mV more positive compared to the proteins alone. When covalently linked, the midpoint potential of the enzyme has a value similar to that in the noncovalent complex, while the ferredoxin potential is 20 mV more positive compared to ferredoxin alone. The changes in redox potentials have been used to estimate the dissociation constants for the interaction of the different redox forms of the proteins, based on the value of 1.21 microM calculated for the oxidized noncovalent complex.  相似文献
