The response of forest productivity to climate extremes strongly depends on ambient environmental and site conditions. To better understand these relationships at a regional scale, we used nearly 800 observation years from 271 permanent long‐term forest monitoring plots across Switzerland, obtained between 1980 and 2017. We assimilated these data into the 3‐PG forest ecosystem model using Bayesian inference, reducing the bias of model predictions from 14% to 5% for forest stem carbon stocks and from 45% to 9% for stem carbon stock changes. We then estimated the productivity of forests dominated by Picea abies and Fagus sylvatica for the period of 1960–2018, and tested for productivity shifts in response to climate along elevational gradient and in extreme years. Simulated net primary productivity (NPP) decreased with elevation (2.86 ± 0.006 Mg C ha?1 year?1 km?1 for P. abies and 0.93 ± 0.010 Mg C ha?1 year?1 km?1 for F. sylvatica). During warm–dry extremes, simulated NPP for both species increased at higher and decreased at lower elevations, with reductions in NPP of more than 25% for up to 21% of the potential species distribution range in Switzerland. Reduced plant water availability had a stronger effect on NPP than temperature during warm‐dry extremes. Importantly, cold–dry extremes had negative impacts on regional forest NPP comparable to warm–dry extremes. Overall, our calibrated model suggests that the response of forest productivity to climate extremes is more complex than simple shift toward higher elevation. A biphasic pattern was observed in the time-course of the changes in both plasma ion concentration and acid-base status. During the first 10 days, plasma Na+, K+, and Cl– concentrations fell abruptly, then more gradually. [Cl–] decreased more than [Na+] resulting in a progressive increase in the [Na+]/[Cl–] ratio. During the second phase of acclimation to fresh water plasma Na+, K+, and Cl– concentrations progressively increased. [Cl–] increased more than [Na+], so that [Na+]/[Cl–] ratio decreased. Transfer into fresh water did not significantly change plasma lactate concentration. Upon exposure to fresh water, blood pH increased from 7.94±0.04 to 8.43±0.06 at day 10 and then decreased to 8.08±0.03 at day 34. Life cycle assessment (LCA) and environmentally extended input–output analyses (EEIOA) are two techniques commonly used to assess environmental impacts of an activity/product. Their strengths and weaknesses are complementary, and they are thus regularly combined to obtain hybrid LCAs. A number of approaches in hybrid LCA exist, which leads to different results. One of the differences is the method used to ensure that mixed LCA and EEIOA data do not overlap, which is referred to as correction for double counting. This aspect of hybrid LCA is often ignored in reports of hybrid assessments and no comprehensive study has been carried out on it. This article strives to list, compare, and analyze the different existing methods for the correction of double counting. We first harmonize the definitions of the existing correction methods and express them in a common notation, before introducing a streamlined variant. We then compare their respective assumptions and limitations. We discuss the loss of specific information regarding the studied activity/product and the loss of coherent financial representation caused by some of the correction methods. This analysis clarifies which techniques are most applicable to different tasks, from hybridizing individual LCA processes to integrating complete databases. We finally conclude by giving recommendations for future hybrid analyses. 相似文献

Human data raised the possibility that coronary heart disease is associated with mutations in the apolipoprotein gene cluster APOA1/C3/A4 that result in multideficiency of cluster-encoded apolipoproteins and hypoalphalipoproteinemia. To test this hypothesis, we generated a mouse model for human apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I)/C-III/A-IV deficiency. Homozygous mutants (Apoa1/c3/a4(-/-)) lacking the three cluster-encoded apolipoproteins were viable and fertile. In addition, feeding behavior and growth were apparently normal. Total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc), and triglyceride levels in the plasma of fasted mutants fed a regular chow were 32% (P < 0.001), 17% (P < 0.001), and 70% (P < 0.01), respectively, those of wild-type mice. When fed a high-fat Western-type (HFW) diet, Apoa1/c3/a4(-/-) mice showed a further decrease in HDLc concentration and a moderate increase in TC, essentially in non-HDL fraction. The capacity of Apoa1/c3/a4(-/-) plasma to promote cholesterol efflux in vitro was decreased to 75% (P < 0.001), and LCAT activity was decreased by 38% (P < 0.01). Despite the very low total plasma cholesterol, the imbalance in lipoprotein distribution caused small but detectable aortic lesions in one-third of Apoa1/c3/a4(-/-) mice fed a HFW diet. In contrast, none of the wild-type mice had lesions. These results demonstrate that Apoa1/c3/a4(-/-) mice display clinical features similar to human apoA-I/C-III/A-IV deficiency (i.e., marked hypoalphalipoproteinemia) and provide further support for the apoa1/c3/a4 gene cluster as a minor susceptibility locus for atherosclerosis in mice. 相似文献

Outcrops in the southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are recognized as some of the largest copper–cobalt orebodies in the world. They support a unique vegetation with nearly 600 metallophytes that include rare and endemic species. Mineral exploitation has increased considerably in the region since the 1900s, affecting both environmental and public health. Phytostabilisation of polluted areas represents an opportunity to decrease the bioavailability of heavy metals in the highly polluted soils that result from ore extraction. Such a technique has been successfully implemented near Lubumbashi with the grass Microchloa altera. However, long-term maintenance requires a good understanding of interspecific relationships, such as competition and facilitation. This study tested the establishment success of four herbaceous species from the Katangan Copperbelt by assessing the potential role of Microchloa altera as a nurse species. Two annual and two perennial species were sown in an experiment designed to study the influence of soil amendment and vegetation cover on seedling emergence, growth, and survival. These variables were monitored during the vegetation growing season as well as resprouting success for perennials. Microchloa altera showed a distinct effect on the emergence and survival of annual and perennial species and negatively affected the growth of individuals belonging to both groups of species. 相似文献

There is an urgent need to develop sustainable pest management systems to protect arable crops in order to replace the current over-reliance on synthetic insecticides. Semiochemicals are insect- or plant-derived chemicals that are used by organisms as information signals. Integrated pest management tools are currently in development that utilise semiochemicals to manipulate the behaviour of pest insects and their natural enemies to provide effective control of pests within the crop. These innovative tools usually require fewer inputs and can involve multiple elements, therefore reducing the likelihood of resistance developing compared with use of synthetic toxicants. We review here the life cycle of the pollen beetle Brassicogethes aeneus (previously known as Meligethes aeneus) which is a pest insect of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) and describe the current knowledge of any behaviour mediated by semiochemicals in this species. We discuss the behavioural processes where semiochemical-based control approaches may be appropriate and consider how these approaches could be incorporated into an integrated pest management strategy for this important arable crop. 相似文献

Acute blast crisis occurred in two patients with previously well-confirmed chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. The finding by direct immunofluorescence of membrane-bound monoclonal immunoglobulins on the surface of the blast cells showed that they were related to B cells in the same way as the proliferating lymphocytes in most patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. Phylogenetic analysis of the superfamily of D-2-hydroxyacid dehydrogenases identified the previously unrecognized cluster of glyoxylate/hydroxypyruvate reductases (GHPR). Based on the genome sequence of Rhizobium etli, the nodulating endosymbiont of the common bean plant, we predicted a putative 3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase to exhibit GHPR activity instead. The protein was overexpressed and purified. The enzyme is homodimeric under native conditions and is indeed capable of reducing both glyoxylate and hydroxypyruvate. Other substrates are phenylpyruvate and ketobutyrate. The highest activity was observed with glyoxylate and phenylpyruvate, both having approximately the same kcat/Km ratio. This kind of substrate specificity has not been reported previously for a GHPR. The optimal pH for the reduction of phenylpyruvate to phenyllactate is pH 7. These data lend support to the idea of predicting enzymatic substrate specificity based on phylogenetic clustering. 相似文献

Even genetically distant prokaryotes can exchange genes between them, and these horizontal gene transfer events play a central role in adaptation and evolution. While this was long thought to be restricted to prokaryotes, certain eukaryotes have acquired genes of bacterial origin. However, gene acquisitions in eukaryotes are thought to be much less important in magnitude than in prokaryotes. Here, we describe the complex evolutionary history of a bacterial catabolic gene that has been transferred repeatedly from different bacterial phyla to stramenopiles and fungi. Indeed, phylogenomic analysis pointed to multiple acquisitions of the gene in these filamentous eukaryotes—as many as 15 different events for 65 microeukaryotes. Furthermore, once transferred, this gene acquired introns and was found expressed in mRNA databases for most recipients. Our results show that effective inter-domain transfers and subsequent adaptation of a prokaryotic gene in eukaryotic cells can happen at an unprecedented magnitude. 相似文献
