Light, nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton photosynthesis were studied in a Lake Tahoe sediment plume during maximum spring runoff. They were compared with conditions in clear lake waters not influenced by inlets. In the plume, nutrient concentrations increased in proportion to sediment density whereas light transmission of water was reduced with little effect on the spectral composition except for red light. Light inhibition of photosynthesis at the lake surface was less pronounced in the plume than in clear water and light limitation occurred more rapidly in deeper layers. Evidence from both lake experiments and laboratory bioassays suggests that iron had the greatest stimulatory effect on both photosynthetic activity and biomass growth at maximum sediment densities near the stream inlet. Because of less surface inhibition, photosynthetic light energy utilization efficiency was usually higher in the sediment plume which occurred in relatively shallow areas near the shore. In order to estimate overall effects of enhanced turbidity associated with nutrient loading on Lake Tahoe's primary productivity, profiles taken in shallow areas near the lakeshore were extrapolated to the maximum depth of photosynthesis. Light limitation would cause decreasing productivity, but nutrient stimulation would make this effect less pronounced. The overall effect would depend on the extent of sediment loading relative to nutrient loading.  相似文献

Numerous studies have concluded that primates move about their environments in a nonrandom manner, frequently traveling between consecutive foraging sites along relatively straight-line paths. However, primates do not always take the most direct path between resources, and a number of species have been observed to travel repeatedly along a network of the same arboreal pathways. In this study, I used spatially explicit techniques to examine quantitatively what mantled howler monkey groups on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, accomplish by selecting nonlinear paths between resources and by repeatedly using the same paths within an arboreal network. Results show that chosen arboreal paths between sites where foraging occurred have higher levels of resource availability and canopy connectivity than comparable straight-line paths between the same sites. When comparing the relative importance of these factors, autologistic models of pathway choice indicate that though canopy connectivity is related to the location of repeatedly used arboreal pathway networks, the most statistically significant predictor is resource availability (both on a path and within a visual detection distance of a path). These results provide support for the hypothesis that repeated use of arboreal pathway networks aids in resource monitoring and acquisition. In addition, statistical models developed from 1 primary focal group’s travel patterns had high predictive value when employed to generate likely locations for arboreal pathways in the home ranges of 3 neighboring groups. This finding has important implications for studies of primate habitat use and seed dispersal, as it suggests that different groups consistently use similar characteristics when deciding on travel paths.  相似文献

Recent research focuses on animal personalities, that is individual differences in behaviour that are consistent across contexts and over time. From an adaptive perspective, such limited behavioural plasticity is surprising, since a more flexible structure of behaviour should provide a selective advantage. Here, we argue that consistency can be advantageous because it makes individuals predictable. Predictability, however, can only be advantageous if at least some individuals in the population respond to individual differences. Consequently, the evolution of consistency and responsiveness are mutually dependent. We present a general analysis of this coevolutionary feedback for scenarios that can be represented as matrix games with two pure strategies (e.g. hawk-dove game, snowdrift game). We first show that responsive strategies are favoured whenever some individual differences are present in the population (e.g. due to mutation and drift). We then show that the presence of responsive individuals can trigger a coevolutionary process between responsiveness and consistency that gives rise to populations in which responsive individuals coexist with unresponsive individuals who show high levels of adaptive consistency in their behaviour. Next to providing an adaptive explanation for consistency, our results also link two key features associated with personalities, individual differences in responsiveness and behavioural consistency.  相似文献

Abstract

A second ecological survey of the Waikanae estuary, in the North Island of New Zealand, was carried out 30 years after the first (1941–1943), and was of similar duration. The observer for the first survey participated in the second, and the same methods were used. Brief accounts are given of the prevailing climate and geology, and of physical changes at the estuary. The effect of periodic storms and of the various encroachments by man is recorded; the latter appear to be particularly important. The vegetation of the estuary is described. Records of beach patrols and of other ornithologists supplement the authors' observations on the bird life. The numbers of birds recorded in the two surveys are compared by analyses of variance. Changes in the flora deduced from aerial photographs spanning the two surveys and from notes and photographs are related to man-induced disturbance, natural physical changes, and natural succession. The total of 79 bird species recorded at the estuary and in its immediate vicinity compares favourably with the 60 species recorded during the first survey. The increase of nearly one-third is due to such factors as the appearance of new Australian bird species, the information provided by the beach patrols, and the extension of sand-flat habitat. In terms of numbers observed, 10 bird species have increased, 11 remain unchanged, and 8 have declined. The distribution of birds is considered in relation to nine areas of habitat: the beach and open sea; open dunes at the beach front; river and sand flats; unfixed and fixed dunes; saltmarsh; grassed fields; and lakelets. The most species (29) were recorded on sand flats and the least (7) on unfixed dunes. Periodic rechannelling of the river mouth has led to expansion of the sand flats as a habitat for waders and some other shore birds, but other man-induced developments, such as housing, are threatening the present ecological balance of the estuary. Use of the area for recreation and for wildlife study is increasing, and we consider that action by conservation authorities is urgently required.  相似文献

The breeding biology of Euchaeta norvegicn (Boeck) has been studied in Loch Etive, Scotland, between 27 September 1971 and 24 August 1972. Information is presented on seasonal variations in the sex ratio of adults (stage VI), as well as stage IV and stage V copepodites, and examines the proportion of males present in the adult population as a factor determining the numbers of spermatophores attached to adult females and the quantity of egg sacs produced. These parameters are used to provide a measure of the intensity of mating, fertilization and breeding.  相似文献

Summary Micronekton and macrozooplankton assemblages (0–1000 m) were sampled from the open ocean in the vicinity of marginal ice zones in the southern Scotia and western Weddell Seas using midwater trawls. Small regional differences in species composition were found in the differing hydrographic settings with the Scotia Sea being slightly more diverse. Most species exhibited broad vertical ranges with no distinct pattern of vertical movement. Exceptions were mesopelagic fish and Salpa thompsoni which undertook diel vertical migrations. Biomass was high (2.4–3.1 g DW/m2), comparable to Pacific subarctic waters. Euphausia superba and Salpa tompsoni were the numerical and biomass dominants, representing over 50% of the total numbers and standing stocks. In terms of biomass, euphausiids were the most important group at shallow depths (0–200 m) but were surpassed by salps in the Scotia Sea and mesopelagic fish in the Weddell Sea when all depths down to 1000 m were considered. Pelagic fish biomass (3.3–4.4 g WW/m2) greatly exceeded published estimates for birds (0.025–0.070 g WW/m2), seals (0.068–0.089 g WW/m2) and whales (0.167 to 0.399 g WW/m2), making mesopelagic fish the most prevalent krill predators in the Antarctic oceanic system.  相似文献

Many theorists argue that the probabilities of unique events, even real possibilities such as President Obama''s re-election, are meaningless. As a consequence, psychologists have seldom investigated them. We propose a new theory (implemented in a computer program) in which such estimates depend on an intuitive non-numerical system capable only of simple procedures, and a deliberative system that maps intuitions into numbers. The theory predicts that estimates of the probabilities of conjunctions should often tend to split the difference between the probabilities of the two conjuncts. We report two experiments showing that individuals commit such violations of the probability calculus, and corroborating other predictions of the theory, e.g., individuals err in the same way even when they make non-numerical verbal estimates, such as that an event is highly improbable.  相似文献

Eighty crossbred, multiparous sows, weighing between 190 and 320 kg, were randomly assigned to the following four treatment groups of 20 sows each: 1) saline-saline, 2) cloprostenol-saline, 3) saline-xylazine and 4) cloprostenol-xylazine. The mean gestation length of each multiparous sow was calculated. Cloprostenol (250 ug/sow, i.m.) or saline was given 3 d prior to the calculated due date at 11:30 a.m. Xylazine (2 mg/kg, i.m.) or saline was given 20 h after either the cloprostenol or previous saline treatment. Cloprostenol-xylazine treated sows had the shortest mean farrowing interval (1.5 +/- 0.3 h) when compared with the rest of the treatment groups (saline-saline:66.0 +/- 8.1, cloprostenol-saline:10.5 +/- 1.9, saline-xylazine:60.6 +/- 5.6 h). Farrowing time, percentage of stillbirths, average birth weight, d-5 and d-21 postbirth weights, number of pigs born, number of pigs born alive, and number of pigs surviving at 5 and 21 d afterbirth were not significantly different among the four groups. This study demonstrated that cloprostenol-xylazine treatment decreases the time to onset of farrowing with less variation than cloprostenol or xylazine alone. Therefore, the use of a cloprostenol-xylazine combination is suggested as an alternative method for inducing farrowing.  相似文献

The tooth arrangement of hyperodapedontine rhynchosaurs shows clear patterns of morphological derivation, which can be summarized as three main apomorphic trends: the increase in the number of tooth rows lateral to the main maxillary groove, the loss of dental structures (medial groove and lingual teeth) medial to the main maxillary groove, and the loss of dental structures (medial crest and lingual teeth) medial to the main dentary crest. The analysis of these trends from a heterochronic viewpoint reveals that acceleration was the most probable process involved in the increase in number of the lateral maxillary tooth rows, while the loss of the medial structures of the maxilla and dentary seem to be related respectively to neoteny and post-displacement. Both peramorphic and paedomorphic processes are, therefore, thought to have directed the main modifications seen in the tooth arrangement of the hyperodapedontine rhynchosaurs. Heterochrony plays an important role in the evolution of the Late Triassic rhynchosaurs, which are differentiated mainly on the basis of their dental morphology.  相似文献
