Ants, the most abundant taxa among canopy‐dwelling animals in tropical rainforests, are mostly represented by territorially dominant arboreal ants (TDAs) whose territories are distributed in a mosaic pattern (arboreal ant mosaics). Large TDA colonies regulate insect herbivores, with implications for forestry and agronomy. What generates these mosaics in vegetal formations, which are dynamic, still needs to be better understood. So, from empirical research based on 3 Cameroonian tree species (Lophira alata, Ochnaceae; Anthocleista vogelii, Gentianaceae; and Barteria fistulosa, Passifloraceae), we used the Self‐Organizing Map (SOM, neural network) to illustrate the succession of TDAs as their host trees grow and age. The SOM separated the trees by species and by size for L. alata, which can reach 60 m in height and live several centuries. An ontogenic succession of TDAs from sapling to mature trees is shown, and some ecological traits are highlighted for certain TDAs. Also, because the SOM permits the analysis of data with many zeroes with no effect of outliers on the overall scatterplot distributions, we obtained ecological information on rare species. Finally, the SOM permitted us to show that functional groups cannot be selected at the genus level as congeneric species can have very different ecological niches, something particularly true for Crematogaster spp., which include a species specifically associated with B. fistulosa, nondominant species and TDAs. Therefore, the SOM permitted the complex relationships between TDAs and their growing host trees to be analyzed, while also providing new information on the ecological traits of the ant species involved.  相似文献

Digital signal processing (DSP) techniques for biological sequence analysis continue to grow in popularity due to the inherent digital nature of these sequences. DSP methods have demonstrated early success for detection of coding regions in a gene. Recently, these methods are being used to establish DNA gene similarity. We present the inter-coefficient difference (ICD) transformation, a novel extension of the discrete Fourier transformation, which can be applied to any DNA sequence. The ICD method is a mathematical, alignment-free DNA comparison method that generates a genetic signature for any DNA sequence that is used to generate relative measures of similarity among DNA sequences. We demonstrate our method on a set of insulin genes obtained from an evolutionarily wide range of species, and on a set of avian influenza viral sequences, which represents a set of highly similar sequences. We compare phylogenetic trees generated using our technique against trees generated using traditional alignment techniques for similarity and demonstrate that the ICD method produces a highly accurate tree without requiring an alignment prior to establishing sequence similarity.  相似文献

Major wounds of the chest usually cause immediate or early death. Of 35 patients with major thoracic battle injuries who were treated in one naval hospital, six had non-penetrating wounds of the chest and other areas. Of the 29 with penetrating wounds of the chest, 23 were treated by aspiration of hemothorax, decortication in three cases, and thoracotomy for control of hemorrhage in one case and for removal of a foreign body in another.Four cases are reported, two to illustrate the usual course of treatment and two in which the patient died.  相似文献

The photosynthetic characteristics of four transgenic rice lines over-expressing rice NADP-malic enzyme (ME), and maize phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PC), pyruvate,orthophosphate dikinase (PK), and PC+PK (CK) were investigated using outdoor-grown plants. Relative to untransformed wild-type (WT) rice, PC transgenic rice exhibited high PC activity (25-fold increase) and enhanced activity of carbonic anhydrase (more than two-fold increase), while the activity of ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) and its kinetic property were not significantly altered. The PC transgenic plants also showed a higher light intensity for saturation of photosynthesis, higher photosynthetic CO2 uptake rate and carboxylation efficiency, and slightly reduced CO2 compensation point. In addition, chlorophyll a fluorescence analysis indicates that PC transgenic plants are more tolerant to photo-oxidative stress, due to a higher capacity to quench excess light energy via photochemical and non-photochemical means. Furthermore, PC and CK transgenic rice produced 22–24% more grains than WT plants. Taken together, these results suggest that expression of maize C4 photosynthesis enzymes in rice, a C3 plant, can improve its photosynthetic capacity with enhanced tolerance to photo-oxidation. Hyperstructures or modules have been proposed to constitute a level of organisation intermediate between macromolecules and whole cells. In this model of intracellular organisation, hyperstructures compete and collaborate for existence within the membrane and cytoplasm. Those directly involved in the cell cycle include initiation, replication and division hyperstructures based on DnaA, SeqA and the 2-minute cluster, respectively. During the run-up to initiation, the mass to DNA ratio increases and, we contend, differential gene expression leads to some hyperstructures becoming more active and stable than others. This results in a drop in the diversity of hyperstructures, some of which release DnaA as they dissociate, and a DnaA-initiation hyperstructure forms. Subsequent DNA replication and cell division generate different daughter cells containing different hyperstructures. This has the advantage of increasing the phenotypic diversity of the population. In developing this model, we also invoke hyperstructures in the partitioning of origins of replication.  相似文献

Evolution may improve the invasiveness of populations, but it often remains unclear whether key adaptation events occur after introduction into the recipient habitat (i.e. post‐introduction adaptation scenario), or before introduction within the native range (i.e. prior‐adaptation scenario) or at a primary site of invasion (i.e. bridgehead scenario). We used a multidisciplinary approach to determine which of these three scenarios underlies the invasion of the tropical ant Wasmannia auropunctata in a Mediterranean region (i.e. Israel). Species distribution models (SDM), phylogeographical analyses at a broad geographical scale and laboratory experiments on appropriate native and invasive populations indicated that Israeli populations followed an invasion scenario in which adaptation to cold occurred at the southern limit of the native range before dispersal to Israel. We discuss the usefulness of combining SDM, genetic and experimental approaches for unambiguous determination of eco‐evolutionary invasion scenarios.  相似文献

The concept that the tumor suppressor p53 is a latent DNA-binding protein that must become activated for sequence-specific DNA binding recently has been challenged, although the "activation" phenomenon has been well established in in vitro DNA binding assays. Using electrophoretic mobility shift assays and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, we analyzed the binding of "latent" and "activated" p53 to double-stranded DNA oligonucleotides containing or not containing a p53 consensus binding site (DNAspec or DNAunspec, respectively). In the absence of competitor DNA, latent p53 bound DNAspec and DNAunspec with high affinity in a sequence-independent manner. Activation of p53 by the addition of the C-terminal antibody PAb421 significantly decreased the binding affinity for DNAunspec and concomitantly increased the binding affinity for DNAspec. The net result of this dual effect is a significant difference in the affinity of activated p53 for DNAspec and DNAunspec, which explains the activation of p53. High affinity nonspecific DNA binding of latent p53 required both the p53 core domain and the p53 C terminus, whereas high affinity sequence-specific DNA binding of activated p53 was mediated by the p53 core domain alone. The data suggest that high affinity nonspecific DNA binding of latent and high affinity sequence-specific binding of activated p53 to double-stranded DNA differ in their requirement for the C terminus and involve different structural features of the core domain. Because high affinity nonspecific DNA binding of latent p53 is restricted to wild type p53, we propose that it relates to its tumor suppressor functions.  相似文献

A 7‐day mesocosm experiment was conducted in July 1996 to investigate the effects of ambient UV‐B radiation (UVBR) exclusion and two UVBR enhancements above ambient levels on NO3?, NH4+ and urea utilization in a natural plankton community (<240 μm) from the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary. The phytoplankton community was dominated by diatoms during the first 3 days and, afterward, by flagellates and dinoflagellates. The results of 4‐h incubations just below the water surface show that, compared with ambient UVBR conditions, UVBR exclusion generally increased NO3?, NH4+, and urea uptakes. During the last 4 days of the experiment, the percent increase in the specific uptake rate of urea under excluded UVBR conditions varied between 17% and 130% and was a linear function of the ambient UVBR dose removed. During the first 3 days, the phytoplankton community dominated by diatoms was able to withstand UVBR enhancements without any perceptible effect on nitrogen uptake. However, during the post‐diatom bloom period, UVBR enhancements resulted in decreases in NO3?, NH4+, and urea uptake compared with ambient UVBR conditions. The reduction of urea uptake under UVBR enhancements during the last 3 days varied between 23% and 64% and was linearly related to the enhanced UVBR dose. However, the different UVBR treatments did not affect the internal organic nitrogen composition (internal urea, free amino acids, and proteins) of the phytoplankton community experiencing vertical mixing in the mesocosms. The discrepancy between short‐term uptake measurements at the surface and long‐term effects in the mesocosms emphasizes the importance of vertical mixing on UVBR effects in natural ecosystems. This suggests that an increase in ambient UVBR would have a minimal effect on nitrogen utilization by natural phytoplankton assemblages if these are vertically mixed.  相似文献

Mandelate racemase (EC 5.1.2.2) from Pseudomonas putida catalyzes the interconversion of the two enantiomers of mandelic acid with remarkable proficiency, producing a rate enhancement exceeding 15 orders of magnitude. The rates of the forward and reverse reactions catalyzed by the wild-type enzyme and by a sluggish mutant (N197A) have been studied in the absence and presence of several viscosogenic agents. A partial dependence on relative solvent viscosity was observed for values of kcat and kcat/Km for the wild-type enzyme in sucrose-containing solutions. The value of kcat for the sluggish mutant was unaffected by varying solvent viscosity. However, sucrose did have a slight activating effect on mutant enzyme efficiency. In the presence of the polymeric viscosogens poly(ethylene glycol) and Ficoll, no effect on kcat or kcat/Km for the wild-type enzyme was observed. These results are consistent with both substrate binding and product dissociation being partially rate-determining in both directions. The viscosity variation method was used to estimate the rate constants comprising the steady-state expressions for kcat and kcat/Km. The rate constant for the conversion of bound (R)-mandelate to bound (S)-mandelate (k2) was found to be 889 +/- 40 s(-1) compared with a value of 654 +/- 58 s(-1) for kcat in the same direction. From the temperature dependence of Km (shown to equal K(S)), k2, and the rate constant for the uncatalyzed reaction [Bearne, S. L., and Wolfenden, R. (1997) Biochemistry 36, 1646-1656], we estimated the enthalpic and entropic changes associated with substrate binding (DeltaH = -8.9 +/- 0.8 kcal/mol, TDeltaS = -4.8 +/- 0.8 kcal/mol), the activation barrier for conversion of bound substrate to bound product (DeltaH# = +15.4 +/- 0.4 kcal/mol, TDeltaS# = +2.0 +/- 0.1 kcal/mol), and transition state stabilization (DeltaH(tx) = -22.9 +/- 0.8 kcal/mol, TDeltaS(tx) = +1.8 +/- 0.8 kcal/mol) during mandelate racemase-catalyzed racemization of (R)-mandelate at 25 degrees C. Although the high proficiency of mandelate racemase is achieved principally by enthalpic reduction, there is also a favorable and significant entropic contribution.  相似文献
