Sorption of Talaromyces emersonii cellulase on cellulosic substrates

The sorption characteristics of the cellulase system of Talaromyces emersonii on various cellulosic substrates were examined. Analysis of reaction mixture supernatants by electrophoresis and enzyme assay showed that all components of the cellulase system were rapidly adsorbed by cellulose and then gradually returned to the liquid phase as the hydrolysis of the substrate progressed. The extent of adsorption in the rapid phase was influenced by pH, temperature, the nature of the substrate, and its concentration.

Ultrastructural identification of corticotropes of the fetal rat

Corticotropes of rat fetuses aged 16, 18 and 21 days were localized by the indirect antibody-enzyme method on semithin sections of the pituitary. The development of the ultrastructure of these cells was observed on consecutive ultrathin sections. In comparison with previous data our present results show that identification of a fetal cell type cannot be based entirely on morphological criteria. The structural peculiarities of corticotropes obtained from studies in vivo are compared with those observed in cells maintained in vitro.     

Therapy of Staphylococcal Infections in Monkeys. IV. Further Comparison of Triacetyloleandomycin and Erythromycins

Intravenous inoculation of a penicillin-resistant, phage type 80/81 staphylococcus caused lethal infection in 8 of 15 untreated monkeys. Daily intragastric administration of 50 mg/kg of triacetyloleandomycin, erythromycin estolate, and erythromycin ethylsuccinate was followed by mortalities of 0 of 16, 3 of 16, and 3 of 10, respectively. At dose levels of 25 and 12.5 mg/kg, none of 7 and 4 of 7 receiving triacetyloleandomycin and erythromycin estolate, respectively, died, as compared to 3 of 4 deaths in controls. In vitro sensitivity data and serum antibacterial levels would suggest that triacetyloleandomycin would be the least effective therapeutically. However, this prediction was not fulfilled in these studies of experimental infections in monkeys wherein triacetyloleandomycin was a very effective antimicrobial agent.     

Alternative Developmental Pathways Determined by Environmental Conditions in the Cellular Slime Mold Dictyostelium discoideum

The cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum grows in the soil as a population of independent, uninucleate amoebae. Upon entrance to the stationary phase, the amoebae collect in multicellular aggregates to form organized fruiting bodies composed of spores and stalk cells. Depending upon environmental conditions, the developing aggregate either constructs the fruiting body at the site of aggregation or transforms into a structure that can migrate to a more favorable location. Environmental conditions that favor migration are (i) the accumulation of metabolite(s) produced by the aggregate and (ii) a low ionic strength in the substratum. Conditions that prevent migration or that stop a migrating slug are (i) the presence of buffer and (ii) illumination by overhead light.     

IDIOPATHIC PULMONARY HEMOSIDEROSIS

Idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis is a rare condition manifested by recurrent pulmonary hemorrhage of unknown cause, diffuse radiologic abnormalities, cough, hemoptysis and moderate to severe hypochromic anemia. Diagnosis can be confirmed by iron stains of the sputum or lung aspiration or by biopsy. Prolonged spontaneous remission may occur without the use of corticosteroid therapy. Studies here reported indicated that the anemia is hypochromic and microcytic anemia of blood loss and iron deficiency, in spite of the presence of large amounts of iron in the pulmonary tissue. Correction of the anemia by intensive iron therapy and transfusion is considered an important part of therapy.
