The understory in forest plantations can increase richness and diversity of natural enemies due to greater plant species richness. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the presence of the understory and climatic season in the region (wet or dry) can increase the richness and abundance of Hymenoptera parasitoids in Eucalyptus plantations, in the municipality of Belo Oriente, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. In each eucalyptus cultivation (five areas of cultivation) ten Malaise traps were installed, five with the understory and five without it. A total of 9,639 individuals from 30 families of the Hymenoptera parasitoids were collected, with Mymaridae, Scelionidae, Encyrtidae and Braconidae being the most collected ones with 4,934, 1,212, 619 and 612 individuals, respectively. The eucalyptus stands with and without the understory showed percentage of individuals 45.65% and 54.35% collected, respectively. The understory did not represent a positive effect on the overall abundance of the individuals Hymenoptera in the E. grandis stands, but rather exerted a positive effect on the specific families of the parasitoids of this order.  相似文献

Microsatellites were used to evaluate the mating system of the remaining trees in a logged population of Swietenia macrophylla, a highly valuable and threatened hardwood species, in the Brazilian Amazon. A total of 25 open pollinated progeny arrays of 16 individuals, with their mother trees, were genotyped using eight highly polymorphic microsatellite loci. Genotypic data analysis from the progeny arrays showed that 373 out of the 400 seedlings (93.25%) were unambiguously the result of outcrossed matings and that the remaining 6.75% had genotypes consistent with self-fertilisation. Apomixis could be ruled out, since none of the 400 seedlings analysed had a multi-locus genotype identical to its mother tree. The high estimate of the multi-locus outcrossing rate (t m = 0.938 ± 0.009) using the mixed mating model also indicated that the population in this remnant stand of S. macrophylla was predominantly allogamous. The relatively large difference between the multi-locus and single-locus outcrossing estimates (t m −t s = 0.117 ± 0.011) provides evidence that, in spite of the high outcrossing rate, a considerable degree of biparental inbreeding has contributed to the genetic structure of this population. Levels of outcrossing were not evenly distributed among maternal trees (t m ranging from 0.39 to 1.00), suggesting the occurrence of a variable degree of self-incompatibility and/or dichogamy among individual trees of this monoecious species. Due to its generalist pollination system and some level of tolerance for selfing, S. macrophylla seems to be resilient to environmental disturbances such as those caused by logging, since it sets fruits with predominantly outcrossed seeds even at low stand densities. Therefore, the remaining individuals in logged areas or in relict fragments may be very important for long-term population recovery and genetic conservation programmes.  相似文献

Spatial conservation prioritization should seek to anticipate climate change impacts on biodiversity and to mitigate these impacts through the development of dynamic conservation plans. Here, we defined spatial priorities for the conservation of amphibians inhabiting the Atlantic Forest Biodiversity Hotspot that overcome the likely impacts of climate change on the distribution of this imperiled fauna. First, we built ecological niche models (ENMs) for 431 amphibian species both for current time and for the mid-point of a 30-year period spanning 2071–2099 (i.e. 2080). For modeling species'' niches, we combined six modeling methods and three different climate models. We also quantified and mapped model uncertainties. Our consensus models forecasted range shifts that culminate with high species richness in central and eastern Atlantic Forest, both for current time and for 2080. Most species had a significant range contraction (up to 72%) and 12% of species were projected to be regionally extinct. Most species would need to disperse because suitable climatic sites will change. Therefore, we identified a network of priority sites for conservation that minimizes the distance a given species would need to disperse because of changes in future habitat suitability (i.e. climate-forced dispersal) as well as uncertainties associated to ENMs. This network also maximized complementary species representation across currently established protected areas. Priority sites already include possible dispersal corridors linking current and future suitable habitats for amphibians. Although we used the a top-ranked Biodiversity Hotspot and amphibians as a case study for illustrating our approach, our study may help developing more effective conservation strategies under climate change, especially when applied at different spatial scales, geographic regions, and taxonomic groups.  相似文献

In this study, flow cytometric analysis was used to evaluate the genetic stability of Passiflora cincinnata Mast. plants regenerated via primary and secondary somatic embryogenesis. Embryogenic calli obtained from culturing zygotic embryos on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 18.1 μM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 4.4 μM benzyladenine (BA) were transferred to differentiation medium. Torpedo and cotyledonary embryos were obtained. These primary embryos were maintained on differentiation medium to generate secondary embryos. Conversion of primary and secondary embryos yielded 305 and 138 normal plants, respectively. Almost 90% of plantlets survived following acclimatization. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that seed-derived plants had on average 3.01 pg nuclear DNA (2C), and all plants, except for a single plant regenerated via primary embryogenesis, maintained their ploidy. This single plant contained more than twice the average DNA content: 6.21 pg (4C). Epidermal stomata of leaves of the tetraploid plant were larger but lower in density than those of diploid plants, indicating that stomatal characteristics are useful in distinguishing between diploid and tetraploid plants of passion fruit. In summary, the procedure we employed to regenerated P. cincinnata plants via somatic embryogenesis generated mostly genetically true-to-type plants.  相似文献

Climate change leads to species'' range shifts, which may end up reducing the effectiveness of protected areas. These deleterious changes in biodiversity may become amplified if they include functionally important species, such as herbivores or pollinators. We evaluated how effective protected areas in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest are in maintaining the diversity of tiger moths (Arctiinae) under climate change. Specifically, we assessed whether protected areas will gain or lose species under climate change and mapped their locations in the Atlantic Forest, in order to assess potential spatial patterns of protected areas that will gain or lose species richness. Comparisons were completed using modeled species occurrence data based on the current and projected climate in 2080. We also built a null model for random allocation of protected areas to identify where reductions in species richness will be more severe than expected. We employed several modern techniques for modeling species'' distributions and summarized results using ensembles of models. Our models indicate areas of high species richness in the central and southern regions of the Atlantic Forest both for now and the future. However, we estimate that in 2080 these regions should become climatically unsuitable, decreasing the species'' distribution area. Around 4% of species were predicted to become extinct, some of them being endemic to the biome. Estimates of species turnover from current to future climate tended to be high, but these findings are dependent on modeling methods. Our most important results show that only a few protected areas in the southern region of the biome would gain species. Protected areas in semideciduous forests in the western region of the biome would lose more species than expected by the null model employed. Hence, current protected areas are worse off, than just randomly selected areas, at protecting species in the future.  相似文献

This study compares smear, growth in Lowenstein-Jensen medium, and in-house polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A total of 72 specimens from 72 patients with clinical symptoms of tuberculosis, including 70 sputum and two bronchial aspirate samples, were tested in parallel by smear, culture, and in-house PCR techniques. From these, 48 (66.6%) were negative by the 3 methods, 2 (2.8%) were smear positive and negative by culture and in-house PCR, 11 (15.3%) were both smear and culture negative, and in-house PCR positive, 7 (9.7%) were positive by the 3 methods, 2 (2.8%) were positive by smear and culture, and negative by PCR, 2 (2.8%) were positive by culture and PCR, but smear negative. After the resolution of discrepancies in PCR results, the sensitivity and specificity for in-house PCR technique to M. tuberculosis relative to the culture, were 81.8% and 81.9%, respectively. These results confirm that this method, in-house PCR, may be a sensitive and specific technique for M. tuberculosis detection, occurring in both positive and negative smear and negative cultures.  相似文献

Prepubertal Bos indicus heifers (n = 774) were submitted to an E2/P4-based timed artificial insemination (TAI) protocol at three different intervals after induction of their pubertal ovulation by insertion of an intravaginal progesterone (P4) device for 12 days. Heifers were randomly assigned to start the TAI protocol at 10 (group 10; n = 253), 12 (group 12; n = 265), or 14 (group 14; n = 256) days after the P4 device was removed. The TAI protocol consisted of the following: insertion of intravaginal device containing P4 (Controlled internal drug release [CIDR]; previously used twice for 9 days each) + estradiol benzoate (2 mg) on Day 0, CIDR withdrawal + estradiol cypionate (0.5 mg) and PGF2α (12.5 mg) on Day 9, and TAI on Day 11. A subgroup of heifers (n = 472) was evaluated by ultrasound on Days 9 and 11 to evaluate the ovaries and to determine P4 concentrations on Day 9. On Day 9, more (P < 0.05) CLs were present, and follicular diameter was smaller (P < 0.05) for group 10 than for groups 12 and 14 (38.4%, 29.3%, and 23.3% with CL and 9.4 ± 0.1, 9.9 ± 0.1, and 9.8 ± 0.1 mm diameter, respectively), but P4 concentrations did not differ (P > 0.1) between treatments (2.4 ± 0.06 ng/mL). Follicular diameter at TAI (11.08 ± 0.09 mm) and ovulation rate (88.4%) did not differ between treatments (P > 0.1). However, conception and pregnancy rates for all heifers were greater (P < 0.05) in group 12 (50.4% and 45.5%, respectively) than in group 10 (38.2% and 33.7%, respectively), with group 14 intermediate to other treatments (45.6% and 40.6%, respectively). The final pregnancy rate did not differ between treatments (80.9%). In conclusion, a 12-day interval from the end of the puberty induction protocol to the start of the TAI protocol resulted in greater conception and pregnancy rates in prepubertal Nellore heifers.  相似文献

The seasonal succession of macrophyte communities on temporarily flooded wetlands in the Pantanal of Poconé was investigated by general surveys of the region and by semi-quantitative surveys conducted on an area of 2500 m2 with a gradient of water depth steep enough to permit a correlation of the species diversity with the depth and duration of flooding. The tropical wet-and-dry climate is the main determinant of the regional ecological conditions, and the seasonal variations of the physical and chemical factors, including the alternation between aquatic and terrestrial conditions over most of the area, produce a pronounced seasonal succession. During all of the seasons, the occurrence and growth of the plant species on the area surveyed was found to be inversely correlated with the water depth, but the statistical significance of the findings varied during the course of the year. The plant species are discussed individually, since little or nothing had previously been reported about the autecology of several of them. In addition, a general survey is made of the common aquatic and wetland plant species encountered in the region. On sites temporarily inundated during the course of the year, there is usually a succession of vegetation involving purely terrestrial and aquatic species as well as short-lived annuals that appear only during the transition period from wet to dry and perennials with seasonal periods of dormancy during periods of excessive dryness.  相似文献
