Endemische Phytoassoziationen aus den Rumänischen Karpaten

The importance of endemic species for plant communities in the Roumanian Carpathians Mts. has been studied and discussed. Associations of the classAsplenietea trichomanis endemic in the South Carpathians were surveyed; they were classified into some endemic alliances (Gypsophilion petraeae, Micromerion pulegii, andSilenion lerchenfeldianae). Their locus classicus, nomenclatoric type and present distribution were also given.     

Human lymphoblastoid cell lines secreting antibodies with restricted HLA specificity

Peripheral B lymphocytes obtained from three healthy individuals who had been immunized against peripheral blood lymphocytes from appropriate HLA-incompatible donors were transformed by the use of Epstein-Barr virus. The transformed blastoid B cells were repeatedly subcultured by means of cluster picking, and the HLA antibody-producing cultures were identified by testing the culture supernatants by means of the cytotoxicity assay, using the corresponding donor cells. Thus far, four cell lines that secrete cytotoxic HLA antibodies (MP1, 3, 4, and 5) have been established. Specific immunoabsorption experiments revealed that the antibody activity is carried by lambda-type IgM for MP1, by kappa-type IgM for MP3 and MP5, and by both for MP4. Specificity analysis of a panel of HLA-pretyped cells indicated that MP1 detects DQw2, whereas MP5 recognizes B7. The specificity of MP3 was similar to a DQ specificity termed DC5 (probably equivalent to TA10) but not the same. Influence of hirudin on the consumption of antithrombin III in experimental DIC

The effect of hirudin and heparin on thrombin-induced consumption of antithrombin III, fibrinogen and platelets was studied in a rat model. Antithrombin III is consumed by tolerated thrombin doses by about 20 per cent. Hirudin and heparin ameliorate the consumption of fibrinogen and platelets at the low thrombin dose used. At high thrombin doses, tolerated only during simultaneous administration of exogenous inhibitors, heparin leads to markedly increased consumption of anti-thrombin III, whereas hirudin does not. With either kind of treatment, the thrombin effect on fibrinogen and platelets is inhibited, however, hirudin acts independently of a cofactor in contrast to heparin.     

Sequence of the 5-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase-encoding gene from the hyperthermophilic methanogen, Methanothermus sociabilis.

We report on the sequence of the Methanothermus sociabilis aladh gene, which encodes the 5'-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase. The identity of the enzyme was determined by sequence comparison and by expression in Escherichia coli.     

Environmental factors affecting the life-tables ofTetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) III. Host-plant nutrition

First, the literature of the last two decades on nutritional effects of host plants on spider mites is briefly reviewed. Second, experiments are described that subjected micro-propagated apple trees to four different levels of each macronutrient N, P and K. Spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch) feeding on leaf disks of these plants were checked for their developmental time, egg production and longevity. Plant analysis revealed that the concentration of N, P and K corresponded to the respective treatments. The content of phenolic compounds in the leaves increased with N and P deficiency. In the N experiment, spider-mite preimaginal developmental rate and oviposition rate were both positively correlated with leaf N. Often, fecundity was positively correlated with N and carbohydrate content of the leaves, and negatively with the phenolic content. Longevity of the two-spotted spider mite was not significantly affected by any treatment. The K experiments yielded only minor differences in plant contents as well as in spider-mite biology.From these mite data, file-tables were constructed and statistically analyzed by the Jackknife technique. The life-table analysis showed a gradual decline in the intrinsic rate of natural increase (r _m) with N and P deficiency. With all experiments pooled,r _m was clearly correlated to leaf N and particularly to the content of phenolic compounds in the leaves. Nitrogen shortage had the most distinct influence on mite population growth: in a range of 1.5–3.0% leaf N,r _m increased by a factor of 4, the number of multiplications per generation (R ₀) by 11, and the doubling time of the population was prolonged 4-fold on severely N deficient leaves.     

An endogenous ligand for the central sulfonylurea receptor

An endogenous ligand for the rat central sulfonylurea receptor has been evidenced in the rat central nervous system. The characteristics of this ligand (extractibility, non-dialysability, chromatographic behaviour on different media, sensitivity to proteases) indicate that it is a neutral to slightly basic peptide.     

Serum steroid levels in intact and endocrine ablated BALB/c nude mice and their intact littermates

An investigation was made of the serum steroid levels found in intact and endocrine ablated nude mice of both sexes and in their intact homozygous littermates. The results showed that nude mice have a normal steroidogenesis, but with decreased levels of circulating steroids compared to those of the littermates. The efficacy of the endocrine ablations was confirmed by the reduction in serum oestrone following oophorectomy, and by the reduction in serum testosterone and progesterone following orchiectomy. The normal steroidogenesis in nude mice, and the similarities between mouse and man with regard to changes in serum steroids following oophorectomy and orchiectomy, support the usefulness of human tumor xenograft models for the study of hormone-tumor interactions.     

The value of provoked expectoration in obtaining sputum samples for cytologic investigation. A prospective, consecutive and controlled investigation of 134 patients

A prospective controlled investigation in 134 consecutive outpatients compared the cytologic adequacy of sputum samples obtained by spontaneous and provoked expectoration. Inhalation of nebulized 10% sodium chloride was used for provoked expectoration. A significantly higher number of adequate samples was produced after provocation, as judged by the presence of alveolar macrophages (X2 = 5.63; p less than 0.02). The improvement in sample adequacy was limited to the nonsmokers and ex-smokers in the study. This result, together with the relatively high cost of cytologic sputum examinations, indicates that provoked expectoration should at least be applied to the collection of sputum samples from nonsmokers and ex-smokers.
