The relationship between maternal age and trisomy was examined by comparing mean ages of 954 trisomic spontaneous abortions with those of live births ascertained at the same study center. The overall mean for trisomy was highly significantly elevated over that of the newborns. The age effect was most pronounced for trisomies involving the small chromosomes, with trisomies 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, and 22 all having significantly increased ages by comparison with the control population. However, the majority of trisomies involving large or medium-sized chromosomes also had elevated mean maternal ages, suggesting that most, if not all, human trisomies are associated with increasing age of the mother. Additional variation in the age effect was observed among trisomies involving similar-sized chromosomes, indicating that factors other than chromosome size also influence the relationship between increasing age and trisomy.  相似文献

A Bacillus subtilis strain, DSM704, was characterized by genetic means, and its production of a human intestinal sucrase inhibitor, 1-deoxynojirimycin, was described. Synthesis of this compound is detected concomitant with the detection of heat-resistant spores. The amount of 1-deoxynojirimycin produced is highly dependent on the carbon source, with growth on substrates metabolized via glycolysis giving the greatest amount of production (up to 1 mg/ml). 1-Deoxynojirimycin appears to be nonmetabolizable by the producing strain in that it cannot serve as a sole carbon or nitrogen source.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that increases in intrathoracic pressure (ITP), by decreasing the pressure gradient for anterograde left ventricular (LV) ejection, should augment cardiac output in acute mitral regurgitation (MR). In a pentobarbital-anesthetized closed-chest canine model, LV stroke volume (SLLV) was measured by integration from an aortic flow probe signal. MR was induced by a regurgitant ring. ITP was elevated over apnea by means of intermittent positive-pressure ventilation (IPPV), asynchronous (asynch) high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV), and cardiac cycle-specific (synch) HFJV. IPPV resulted in the greatest increase in ITP. MR caused a fall in SVLV and a rise in LV filling pressure that were not altered by IPPV. Compared with IPPV or apnea, both asynch and synch HFJV increased SVLV and reduced LV filling pressures (P less than 0.05). Systolic synch HFJV induced a greater increase in SVLV (32%) than diastolic synch HFJV (26%) despite similar ventilatory settings. Our data suggest that when LV contractility is normal but MR impairs forward flow, cardiac cycle-specific increases in ITP will augment forward flow.  相似文献

We studied the effect of lithium on diffusion chamber (DC) granulopoiesis. When DC loaded with bone marrow cells were implanted into the peritoneal cavity of mice previously injected with lithium carbonate, more proliferative and nonproliferative granulocytes were produced as compared to DC implanted into control hosts. The number of DC CFU-c was increased significantly in the lithium-treated group, but there was no difference in the number of DC CFU-s. Levels of DC fluid CSF showed no evident correlation with DC myelopoiesis. These data suggest that a humoral factor other than CSF mediates the action of lithium in DC granulopoiesis, and that lithium's influence on DC hematopoietic stem cell proliferation occurs mainly at the CFU-c level.  相似文献
