Most large‐scale multispecies studies of tree growth have been conducted in tropical and cool temperate forests, whereas Mediterranean water‐limited ecosystems have received much less attention. This limits our understanding of how growth of coexisting tree species varies along environmental gradients in these forests, and the implications for species interactions and community assembly under current and future climatic conditions. Here, we quantify the absolute effect and relative importance of climate, tree size and competition as determinants of tree growth patterns in Iberian forests, and explore interspecific differences in the two components of competitive ability (competitive response and effect) along climatic and size gradients. Spatially explicit neighborhood models were developed to predict tree growth for the 15 most abundant Iberian tree species using permanent‐plot data from the Spanish Second and Third National Forest Inventory (IFN). Our neighborhood analyses showed a climatic and size effect on tree growth, but also revealed that competition from neighbors has a comparatively much larger impact on growth in Iberian forests. Moreover, the sensitivity to competition (i.e. competitive response) of target trees varied markedly along climatic gradients causing significant rank reversals in species performance, particularly under xeric conditions. We also found compelling evidence for strong species‐specific competitive effects in these forests. Altogether, these results constitute critical new information which not only furthers our understanding of important theoretical questions about the assembly of Mediterranean forests, but will also be of help in developing new guidelines for adapting forests in this climatic boundary to global change. If we consider the climatic gradients of this study as a surrogate for future climatic conditions, then we should expect absolute growth rates to decrease and sensitivity to competition to increase in most forests of the Iberian Peninsula (in all but the northern Atlantic forests), making these management considerations even more important in the future.  相似文献

Soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) is the primary receptor for the signaling agent nitric oxide (NO). Electronic absorption and resonance Raman spectroscopy were used to show that nitrosoalkanes bind to the heme of sGC to form six-coordinate, low-spin complexes. In the sGC-nitrosopentane complex, a band assigned to an Fe-N stretching vibration is observed at 543 cm(-)(1) which is similar to values reported for other six-coordinate NO-bound hemoproteins. Nitrosoalkanes activate sGC 2-6-fold and synergize with YC-1, a synthetic benzylindazole derivative, to activate the enzyme 11-47-fold. In addition, the observed off-rates of nitrosoalkanes from sGC were found to be dependent on the alkyl chain length. A linear correlation was found between the observed off-rates and the alkyl chain length which suggests that the sGC heme has a large hydrophobic distal ligand-binding pocket. Together, these data show that nitrosoalkanes are a novel class of heme-based sGC activators and suggest that heme ligation is a general requirement for YC-1 synergism.  相似文献

The ground-state structure and excited-state isomerization dynamics of the Pr and Pfr forms of phytochrome Cph1 are investigated using resonance Raman intensity analysis. Electronic absorption and stimulated resonance Raman spectra of Pr and Pfr are presented; vibronic analysis of the Raman intensities and absorption spectra reveals that both conformers exist as a single, homogeneous population of molecules in the ground state. The homogeneous and inhomogeneous contributions to the overall electronic broadening are determined, and it is found that the broadening is largely homogeneous in nature, pointing to fast excited-state decay. Franck-Condon displacements derived from the Raman intensity analysis reveal the initial atomic motions in the excited state, including the highly displaced, nontotally symmetric torsional and C15–H HOOP modes that appear because of symmetry-reducing distortions about the C14–C15 and C15=C16 bonds. Pfr is especially well primed for ultrafast isomerization and torsional Franck-Condon analysis predicts a <200 fs Pfr → Pr isomerization. This time is significantly faster than the observed 700 fs reaction time, indicating that the Pfr S1 surface has a D-ring rotational barrier caused by steric interactions with the protein.  相似文献

1. Rapid expansion and intensification of anthropogenic activities in the 20th century has caused profound changes in freshwater assemblages. Unfortunately, knowledge of the extent and causes of species loss (SL) is limited due to the lack of reliable historical data. An unusual data set allows us to compare changes in the most sensitive of aquatic insect orders, the Plecoptera, at some 170 locations in the Czech Republic between two time periods, 1955–1960 and 2006–2010. Historical data (1890–1911) on assemblages of six lowland rivers allow us to infer even earlier changes. 2. Regional stonefly diversity decreased in the first half of the 20th century. Streams at lower altitudes lost a substantial number of species, which were never recovered. In the second half of the century, large‐scale anthropogenic pressure caused SL in all habitats, leading to a dissimilarity of contemporary and previous assemblages. The greatest changes were found at sites affected by organic pollution and a mixture of organic pollution and channelisation or impoundment. Colonisation of new habitats was observed in only three of the 80 species evaluated. 3. Species of moderate habitat specialisation and tolerance to organic pollution were most likely to be lost. Those with narrow specialisations in protected habitats were present in both historical and contemporary collections. 4. Contemporary assemblages are the consequence of more than a 100 years of anthropogenic impacts. In particular, streams at lower altitude and draining intensively exploited landscapes host a mere fragment of the original species complement. Most stonefly species are less frequently present than before, although their assemblages remain almost intact in near‐natural mountain streams. Our analyses demonstrate dramatic restriction of species ranges and, in some cases, apparent changes in altitudinal preference throughout the area.  相似文献

目的:研究铼.188标记生物分子在肿瘤治疗中的应用。方法:选取小白鼠作为实验的研究对象,将荷瘤鼠的肉瘤切成小块接种到小白鼠身上,达到试验条件时使用,即将没有明显差异的小白鼠16只随机分为4组,每组4只,注射含有铼一188的药物后分别在不同的时间将其处死,之后取出重要器官进行测量分析,进而得出铼一188的应用效果。结果:瘤内注射的要去在不同时间放射性在瘤内的保持率分别为(90.5±7.7)D%(1h),(92.2±8.6)D%(24h),(88.3±10.9)D%(48h)和(91.5±7.6)D%(72h),在荷瘤鼠内注入生理盐水、非放硫化铼和188Re.硫化铼混悬液,肿瘤质量分别为2885.3±1241.3、2839.9±1965.2和98.4±45.5mg。188Re-硫化铼混悬液在生理盐水、磷酸盐缓冲液和小牛血清中均可稳定72h,而且188W-188Re发生器的应用还可以降低188Re-硫化铼混悬液的价格。随着处死时间的延迟,小鼠肿瘤质量和体积逐渐减小,相临两组比较,后组测定值均明显小于前组,数据经统计学比较具有显著差异(P〈0.05)。结论:188Re-硫化铼混悬液是一种适宜的肿瘤治疗剂。  相似文献

Background  

In August 2006 a major epidemic of bluetongue virus serotype 8 (BTV8) started off in North-West Europe. In the course of 2007 it became evident that BTV8 had survived the winter in North-West Europe, re-emerged and spread exponentially. Recently, the European Union decided to start vaccination against BTV8. In order to improve the understanding of the epidemiological situation, it was necessary to execute a cross-sectional serological study at the end of the BT vector season. Cattle were the target species for cross-sectional serological studies in Europe at the end of 2006 and 2007. However, there was no information on the BTV8-seroprevalence in sheep and goats.  相似文献

Two different temperature regimes for eliciting reproduction in male and females of the Guam form of the brown treesnake were investigated. Males and females maintained at 24°C followed by a 60‐day cool period at 19°C exhibited substantial reproductive activity, and the females that produced clutches did so during a brief period after return to 24°C. In contrast, individuals maintained at 28°C followed by an identical 19°C cooling period exhibited relatively little reproductive activity, and although some females became vitellogenic, none produced eggs. Reproductive activity was virtually absent in all individuals in both groups 7 months after the end of the cool period. Thus, a period of cool temperatures elicits reproductive activity in both sexes and the effect is transitory. Temperatures experienced during the cool period were much lower than the snakes would experience on Guam, and temperatures there are also relatively invariant. Thus, it is possible that only minor fluctuations in temperature are sufficient to elicit reproduction in the Guam population. Because the Guam form does well under, and responds reproductively to, unusually cold temperatures for a lowland tropical reptile, concern that it may have the capacity to invade extralimital temperate areas is warranted. Time-resolved resonance Raman microchip flow experiments have been performed on the lumirhodopsin (Lumi) and metarhodopsin I (Meta I) photointermediates of rhodopsin at room temperature to elucidate the structure of the chromophore in each species as well as changes in protein-chromophore interactions. Transient Raman spectra of Lumi and Meta I with delay times of 16 micros and 1 ms, respectively, are obtained by using a microprobe system to focus displaced pump and probe laser beams in a microfabricated flow channel and to detect the scattering. The fingerprint modes of both species are very similar and characteristic of an all-trans chromophore. Lumi exhibits a relatively normal hydrogen-out-of-plane (HOOP) doublet at 951/959 cm(-1), while Meta I has a single HOOP band at 957 cm(-1). These results suggest that the transitions from bathorhodopsin to Lumi and Meta I involve a relaxation of the chromophore to a more planar all-trans conformation and the elimination of the structural perturbation that uncouples the 11H and 12H wags in bathorhodopsin. Surprisingly, the protonated Schiff base C=N stretching mode in Lumi (1638 cm(-1)) is unusually low compared to those in rhodopsin and bathorhodopsin, and the C=ND stretching mode shifts down by only 7 cm(-1) in D2O buffer. This indicates that the Schiff base hydrogen bonding is dramatically weakened in the bathorhodopsin to Lumi transition. However, the C=N stretching mode in Meta I is found at 1654 cm(-1) and exhibits a normal deuteration-induced downshift of 24 cm(-1), identical to that of the all-trans protonated Schiff base. The structural relaxation of the chromophore-protein complex in the bathorhodopsin to Lumi transition thus appears to drive the Schiff base group out of its hydrogen-bonded environment near Glu113, and the hydrogen bonding recovers to a normal solvated PSB value but presumably a different hydrogen bond acceptor with the formation of Meta I.  相似文献
