Information on the distribution of Formosan monkeys (Macaca cyclopis)

The distribution of Formosan monkeys in Taiwan has been researched by the Macaque Research Group of Japan since 1967. In 1982, the Macaque Research Group of Japan conducted a questionnaire survey. From our past surveys, the answers to the questionnaire, and the 1982 survey, we were able to list 75 habitats of Formosan monkeys. The monkey population is more concentrated in southeast Taiwan than in other areas. This biased pattern of distribution may be attributed to the effect of forest destruction and regional development, rather than to the hunting activities by man. The density of monkey groups was estimated to be at least 0.1 group/km². The range of the group of Formosan monkeys at Chihpen village, Taitung, was estimated to be about 2 km². The size of this group is comparable to the average group size of Japanese monkeys.     

Effect of cadmium-feeding on tissue concentrations of elements in germ-free silkworm (Bombyx mori) larvae and distribution of cadmium in the alimentary canal

Silkworm (Bombyx mori) larvae were reared on an artificial diet containing cadmium (Cd) at concentrations of 5 and 80 micrograms/g wet diet from hatching to the fourth instar and then for 5 days at the fifth instar, respectively. Concentrations of Cd and other elements in the alimentary canal, Malpighian tubes, silk gland, fat body and other organs were determined simultaneously by inductively coupled argon plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. Cd was accumulated in the alimentary canal and Malpighian tubes at concentrations of 1100 and 470 micrograms/g dry wt, respectively. The distribution of Cd in the supernatants of the two highly accumulated organs were determined on an SW column by high performance liquid chromatography-atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Cd was primarily bound to inducible high molecular weight Cd-binding proteins.     

Properties and structure of the soluble ferredoxin from Synechococcus 6301 (Anacystis nidulans). Relationship to gene sequences.

Photoautotrophic cultures of the unicellular cyanobacterium Synechococcus 6301 (Anacystis nidulans) possessed a single [2Fe-2S] ferredoxin with a midpoint redox potential of -385 mV. Determination of the amino acid sequence of the ferredoxin showed that it consisted of 98 residues, with methionine and tryptophan both absent, and with only the four cysteine residues that are required to co-ordinate the iron-sulphur cluster. Comparisons with other ferredoxin sequences showed that most resemblance was to those from filamentous cyanobacteria, with up to 87% homology. There was less resemblance to the ferredoxins of unicellular cyanobacteria, with 25 differences when compared with that from another Synechococcus sp. However, the sequence of Synechococcus 6301 ferredoxin was identical with that derived for a gene sequence for a putative ferredoxin from the genotypically closely related Synechococcus 7942 (Anacystis nidulans R2). In contrast, the sequence showed substantial differences from that corresponding to a putative ferredoxin gene from Synechococcus 6301 reported by Cozens & Walker [(1988) Biochem. J. 252, 563-569].     

Molecular cloning and expression of rat interleukin-1 alpha cDNA

A cDNA sequence coding for rat interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) has been isolated from a cDNA library that was prepared with mRNA derived from LPS-stimulated rat peritoneal macrophages by using human IL-1 alpha cDNA as a probe. The rat cDNA encodes a 270 amino acid residue protein which is homologous (65%) to human IL-1 alpha. The rat cDNA sequence under SV40 early promoter directed the synthesis of biologically active IL-1 in monkey COS-1 cells. Rat IL-1 alpha mRNA is not expressed in spleen, lung, liver or brain, and is also not expressed in these organs of LPS-treated rat except spleen. This suggests that IL-1 alpha is not produced constitutively in various tissues and LPS is not sufficient to induce IL-1 alpha in most tissues. Our data indicate that the IL-1 activities which have been reported to be produced in the brain are not of alpha type. We have constructed a plasmid expressing the carboxy terminal 156 amino acids in Escherichia coli. Recombinant rat IL-1 alpha produced in COS cells or E. coli has cytotoxic activity against the human melanoma cell line A375S1 (GIF activity), which has been reported to be sensitive to human IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta. This suggests that GIF activity is common to IL-1s derived from various sources.
