Relaxins are peptides similar in secondary structure to insulins. In teleost genomes, five or six relaxin genes have been identified. Two relaxins group closely with mammalian relaxin-3 on phylogenetic analysis and are named relaxin-3a and b. We refer to the remainder as relaxins c to f. Ovarian expression of relaxin-3a, d and f genes, and the relaxin-3 receptor gene Rxfp3, was studied in Danio rerio using RT-PCR. Immunohistochemistry was used to determine the distribution of relaxin-3 peptides and RXFP3 in the ovary of Fundulus heteroclitus (killifish). Thirdly, enzyme immunoassays and ovarian follicular culture were used to determine the effect of treatment with human recombinant relaxin-3 on the production of 17beta-estradiol and 17 alpha, 20 beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one in killifish ovarian follicles. Relaxin-3a, d, f, and Rxfp3 genes were expressed regardless of sex or reproductive condition. Relaxin-3 immunostaining was present in mid to late follicular stages within cortical alveoli of the oocyte cytopasm, whereas receptor staining was localized to follicular cells. Treatment with relaxin-3 enhanced 17beta-estradiol production in early and late maturing follicles, but did not have an effect in vitellogenic follicles. Relaxin-3 appeared to suppress the release of MIS production. This suggests that relaxin peptides may be involved with estradiol-dependant events in follicular development. 相似文献

Reverse genetics techniques to rescue influenza viruses have thus far been based on the use of a human polymerase I (PolI) promoter to direct the synthesis of the eight viral RNAs. They can only be used on cells from primate origin due to the species specificity of the PolI promoter. Here we report the cloning of the chicken PolI promoter sequence and the generation of recombinant influenza virus upon transfection of bidirectional PolI/PolII plasmids in avian cells. Potential contributions of this new reverse genetics system in the fields of influenza virus research and influenza vaccine production are discussed. 相似文献

Interactions of three new isophorone derivatives, Isoa Isob and Isoc with salmon testes DNA have been investigated using UV-Vis, fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopic methods. All the studied compounds interact with DNA through intercalative binding mode. The stoichiometry of the isophorone/DNA adducts was found to be 1:1. The fluorescence quenching data revealed a binding interaction with the base pairs of DNA. The CD data indicate that all the investigated isophorones induce DNA modifications. 相似文献

Twenty-six species of gastropods (terrestrial, shell-bearing snails and slugs) were recorded at the 'Evolution Canyon' microsite, lower Nahal Oren, Mount Carmel, Israel. Twenty-five species were recorded at the temperate, mesic north-facing slope (NFS) and 20 species at the xeric south-facing slope (SFS). Out of these species, six were NFS specific ( Pilorcula raymondi hebraica , Euchondrus septemdentatus , Monacha crispulata , Pyramidula rupestris hierosolymitana , Truncatellina haasi , and Vitrea contracta ) and one was SFS specific ( Prolimax eustrictus ). The interslope difference was probably partly due to missing forest species at the SFS in comparison with the NFS. Twenty-two species were Levantine endemics (84.6%) and four species were more widely distributed in the Palaearctic region (15.4%). The Levantine species are inhabitants of the mesic and mainly mountainous regions, but four species ( Granopupa granum , Calaxis hierosolymarum , Cecilioides acicula , and Helix engaddensis ) also penetrate the deserts. Seven species ( Buliminus labrosus , H. engaddensis , Levantina spiriplana caesareana , Metafruticicola fourousi , Monacha syriaca , Sphincterochila cariosa , and Xeropicta vestalis joppensis ) were significantly more abundant on the SFS than on the NFS. The persistence of rainforest patches at Fray Jorge National Park (FJNP) in semiarid Chile (30°40′S), a region receiving approximately 147 mm of annual rainfall, has been a source of concern among forest managers. These forests are likely dependent on water inputs from oceanic fog and their persistence seems uncertain in the face of climate change. Here, we assessed tree radial growth and establishment during the last two centuries and their relation to trends in climate and canopy disturbance. Such evaluation is critical to understanding the dynamics of these semiarid ecosystems in response to climate change. We analyzed forest structure of six forest patches (0.2–22 ha) in FJNP based on sampling within 0.1 ha permanent plots. For the main canopy species, the endemic Aextoxicon punctatum (Aextoxicaceae), we used tree‐ring analysis to assess establishment periods, tree ages, growing trends and their relation to El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), rainfall, and disturbance. The population dynamics of A. punctatum can be described by a continuous regeneration mode. Regeneration of A. punctatum was sensitive to different canopy structures. Growth release patterns suggest the absence of large scale human impact. Radial growth and establishment of A. punctatum were weakly correlated with rainfall and ENSO. If water limits forests patch persistence, patches are likely dependent on the combination of fog and rain water inputs. Forest patches have regenerated continuously for at least 250 years, despite large fluctuations in rainfall driven by ENSO and a regional decline in rainfall during the last century. Because of the positive influence on fog interception, forest structure should be preserved under any future climate scenario. Future research in FJNP should prioritize quantifying the long‐term trends of fog water deposition on forests patches. Fog modeling is crucial for understanding the interplay among physical drivers of water inputs under climate change. 相似文献

Abstract Festuca rubra forms tillers in two different ways: extravaginally and intravaginally. Demography of these two tiller types was observed in seventeen selected tussocks of Festuca rubra s.s. over four growing seasons. Extravaginal tillers were bigger at birth and on the average produced twice as many daughter tillers per tiller. In general, the natality and mortality of extravaginal tillers were less regular than that of intravaginal tillers. Overall tillering rate per tiller was correlated with the density of the surrounding vegetation; mortality, natality and tiller life span were not. High density of the surrounding vegetation did not result in increased formation of extravaginal tillers. The proportion of the extravaginal tillers was not correlated with the density of the F. rubra tussocks. There is no evidence for foraging by extravaginal tillers, but they do act as founders of small clusters of tillers. 相似文献

1. Microbial symbionts can play an important role in defending their insect hosts against natural enemies. However, researchers have little idea how the presence of such protective symbionts impacts food web interactions and species diversity. 2. This study investigated the effects of a protective symbiont (Hamiltonella defensa) in pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum) on hyperparasitoids, which are a trophic level above the natural enemy target of the symbiont (primary parasitoids). 3. Pea aphids, with and without their natural infections of H. defensa, were exposed first to a primary parasitoid against which the symbiont provides partial protection (either Aphidius ervi or Aphelinus abdominalis), and second to a hyperparasitoid known to attack the primary parasitoid species. 4. It was found that hyperparasitoid hatch rate was substantially affected by the presence of the symbiont. This effect appears to be entirely due to the removal of potential hosts by the action of the symbiont: there was no additional benefit or cost experienced by the hyperparasitoids in response to symbiont presence. The results were similar across the two different aphid–parasitoid–hyperparasitoid interactions we studied. 5. It is concluded that protective symbionts can have an important cascading effect on multiple trophic levels by altering the success of natural enemies, but that there is no evidence for more complex interactions. These findings demonstrate that the potential influence of protective symbionts on the wider community should be considered in future food web studies. 相似文献

Class III Homeodomain Leucine Zipper (HD-Zip III) proteins have been implicated in the regulation of cambium identity, as well as primary and secondary vascular differentiation and patterning in herbaceous plants.
