In all industrialized countries, an increasing number of persons are cared for outside the acute hospitals: thus, infection control programs should be adapted to the new scenario. This paper briefly reviews the epidemiological features of infections acquired outside the acute care hospital, focusing on residential homes for the elderly. An intervention study aimed at reducing the healthcare associated infections in 22 residential facilities in Emilia-Romagna region is described.  相似文献

From autumn 2004 to spring 2005, 70 fallow deer (Dama dama), 27 female and 43 male, living in a natural preserve of central Italy were examined by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) to detect specific antibodies to Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Thirty-one (44.28%) sera scored positive: in particular 10 fallow deer (8 male and 2 female) scored positive at 40 antibody titer, 21 deer (8 male and 13 female) at > or = 80 titer. EDTA anticoagulated blood samples collected from 29 of the 70 deer examined were tested by a nested-PCR assay to disclose a 546 bp fragment, specific of A. phagocytophilum 16S rRNA gene. Twenty (72.41%) blood samples (8 male and 13 female deer) resulted positive. Fifteen PCR-positive deer also resulted positive to IFA, whereas the remaining six did not show specific antibodies. Three serologically positive animals gave negative results at the nested PCR. Five deer scored negative both to serological tests and PCR.  相似文献

The present study specifically aimed at preparing and characterizing semidilute binary polymer mixtures of alginate and chitlac which might find an application in the field of cell encapsulation. A polyanion, alginate, and a polycation, a lactose-modified chitosan, were mixed under physiological conditions (pH 7.4 and NaCl 0.15) and at a semidilute concentration avoiding associative phase separation. The mutual solubility was found to be dependent on the charge screening effect of the added NaCl salt, being prevented below 0.05 M NaCl. A comparison with the behavior of the polyanion (alginate) under the same experimental conditions revealed that both the viscosity and the relaxation times of the binary polymer solutions are strongly affected by the presence of the polycation. In particular, the occurrence of electrostatic interactions between the two oppositely charged polysaccharides led to a synergistic effect on the zero-shear viscosity of the solution, which showed a 4.2-fold increase with respect to that of the main component of the solution, i.e., alginate. Moreover, the relaxation time, calculated as the reciprocal of the critical share rate, markedly increased upon reducing the alginate fraction in the binary polysaccharide solution. However, the formation of the soluble complexes and the synergistic effect are reduced upon increasing the concentration of the 1:1 electrolyte. By containing a gel-forming polyanion (alginate, e.g., with Ca(2+) ions) and a bioactive polycation (chitlac, bearing a beta-linked D-galactose), the present system can be regarded as a first step toward the development of biologically active scaffold from polysaccharide mixtures.  相似文献

This paper reviews all information gathered from different disciplines and studies to resolve the species status within the Ceratitis FAR (Ceratitis fasciventris, Ceratitis anonae, Ceratitis rosa) complex, a group of polyphagous fruit fly pest species (Diptera, Tephritidae) from Africa. It includes information on larval and adult morphology, wing morphometrics, cuticular hydrocarbons, pheromones, microsatellites, developmental physiology and geographic distribution. The general consensus is that the FAR complex comprises Ceratitis anonae, two species within Ceratitis rosa (so-called R1 and R2) and two putatitve species under Ceratitis fasciventris. The information regarding the latter is, however, too limited to draw final conclusions on specific status. Evidence for this recognition is discussed with reference to publications providing further details.  相似文献

The differentiation of human CD4+ T cells into T helper cell subtypes and regulatory T cells is crucial to the immune response. Among subtypes, Th1 cells are dominant, representing approximately 50% of all lymphocytes. Thus far, most global proteomic studies have used only partially purified T helper cell subpopulations and/or have employed artificial protocols for inducing specific T helper cell subtypes and/or used gel‐based approaches. These studies have shed light on molecular details of certain aspects of the proteome; nevertheless a global analysis of high purity primary naïve and Th1 cells by LC‐MS/MS is required to provide a reference dataset for proteome‐based T cell subtype characterization. The utilization of highly purified Th1 cells for a global proteome assessment and the bioinformatic comparison to naïve cells reveals changes in cell metabolism and the ubiquitination pathway upon T cell differentiation. MicroRNAs play an important role in myocardial diseases. MiR‐133a regulates cardiac hypertrophy, while miR‐29b is involved in cardiac fibrosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether miR‐133a and miR‐29b play a role in myocardial fibrosis caused by Angiotensin II (Ang II)‐dependent hypertension. Sprague–Dawley rats were treated for 4 weeks with Ang II (200 ng/kg/min) or Ang II + irbesartan (50 mg/kg/day in drinking water), or saline by osmotic minipumps. At the end of the experimental period, cardiac miR‐133a and miR‐29b expression was measured by real‐time PCR, and myocardial fibrosis was evaluated by morphometric analysis. A computer‐based prediction algorithm led to the identification of collagen 1a1 (Col1A1) as a putative target of miR‐133a. A reporter plasmid bearing the 3′‐untranslated regions (UTRs) of Col1A1 mRNA was constructed and luciferase assay was performed. MiR‐133a suppressed the activity of luciferase when the reporter gene was linked to a 3′‐UTR segment of Col1A1 (P < 0.01). Mutation of miR‐133a binding sites in the 3′‐UTR of Col1A1 mRNA abolished miR‐133a‐mediated repression of reporter gene activity, showing that Col1A1 is a real target of miR‐133a. In vivo, Ang II caused an increase in systolic blood pressure (P < 0.0001, tail cuff) and myocardial fibrosis in presence of a decrease in miR‐133a (P < 0.01) and miR‐29b (P < 0.01), and an increase in Col1A1 expression (P < 0.01). These effects were abolished by Ang II administration + irbesartan. These data demonstrate a relationship between miR‐133a and Col1A1, suggesting that myocardial fibrosis occurring in Ang II‐dependent hypertension is regulated by the down‐regulation of miR‐133a and miR‐29b through the modulation of Col1A1 expression. Recurrent networks are ubiquitous in the brain, where they enable a diverse set of transformations during perception, cognition, emotion, and action. It has been known since the 1970’s how, in rate-based recurrent on-center off-surround networks, the choice of feedback signal function can control the transformation of input patterns into activity patterns that are stored in short term memory. A sigmoid signal function may, in particular, control a quenching threshold below which inputs are suppressed as noise and above which they may be contrast enhanced before the resulting activity pattern is stored. The threshold and slope of the sigmoid signal function determine the degree of noise suppression and of contrast enhancement. This article analyses how sigmoid signal functions and their shape may be determined in biophysically realistic spiking neurons. Combinations of fast, medium, and slow after-hyperpolarization (AHP) currents, and their modulation by acetylcholine (ACh), can control sigmoid signal threshold and slope. Instead of a simple gain in excitability that was previously attributed to ACh, cholinergic modulation may cause translation of the sigmoid threshold. This property clarifies how activation of ACh by basal forebrain circuits, notably the nucleus basalis of Meynert, may alter the vigilance of category learning circuits, and thus their sensitivity to predictive mismatches, thereby controlling whether learned categories code concrete or abstract information, as predicted by Adaptive Resonance Theory.  相似文献

Since innovative molecular approaches in phylogenetics solely based on small gene fragments have often generated widely complicated interpretations of crayfish diversity, we propose a geometric morphometric study integrated with previous molecular data to provide robust estimates of phylogeny and classification of the Austropotamobius pallipes complex, genetically divided into several species and subspecies. We discuss whether cephalothorax shape variation can show phylogenetic signals congruent to those derived from analyses of mitochondrial and nuclear markers. Our results support the hypothesis that carapace form is potentially informative in the reconstruction of crayfish phylogeny. In the phenetic analyses, populations collected within the Italian territory form different unexpected clusters, each involving distant populations of different genetic haplogroups, suggesting a within‐species convergence probably due to a series of local adaptations. The phylogenetic analysis performed using a neighbour‐joining algorithm showed interesting relationships amongst the studied populations. In particular, the geometric morphometric matrices showed a slight congruence with some genetic distances, allowing the discrimination of three major lineages: (1) Istran + Apennine group; (2) Arno group; (3) north‐western group. Finally, our observations support some molecular data with a lighter phylogenetic signal that do not suggest a strong separation of A. pallipes into clades and sub‐clades.  相似文献

Glucocorticoid-induced TNFR-related gene (GITR) participates in the immune/inflammatory response. Because GITR expression has been described in cells other than T lymphocytes, we investigated whether it also modulates acute inflammatory response. Using GITR-deficient (GITR(-/-)) mice, we analyzed the role of GITR in the development of carrageenan-induced lung inflammation (pleurisy) by studying several proinflammatory markers 2-8 h after carrageenan injection. When compared with GITR(+/+), GITR(-/-) mice exhibited decreased production of turbid exudate containing a lower number of leukocytes. This was correlated with the reduction of inflammatory markers (including TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, myeloperoxidase, inducible NO synthase, and cyclooxygenase 2) in the pleural exudate and/or in the lung. Moreover, endothelial cells expressed lower levels of adhesion molecules. In lungs of GITR(+/+) mice, GITR ligand expression was not modulated during pleurisy, while that of GITR increased, as a consequence of increased infiltration by GITR-expressing cells and of GITR up-regulation in macrophages and endothelial cells. Finally, cotreatment of GITR(+/+) mice with carrageenan and Fc-GITR fusion protein decreased the number of inflammatory cells (pleural macrophages and lung neutrophils) as compared with carrageenan treatment alone, confirming that GITR plays a role in the modulation of pleurisy.  相似文献
