The social behavior pattern of a solitary male at Koshima was studied by means of radio-telemetry. The relationship between the solitary males and the troop was estimated from radio-tracking data of the former's location and movement, and by direct observation of the latter at each corresponding hour.For most of day, the solitary male stayed within a distance of about 20 to 150 m from the central part of the troop, occasionally approaching it. His movement also was synchronized with that of the troop. For two nights, the solitary male slept at places which were about 200 m from the sleeping sites of the troop and faced them across the beach. The relationship between the solitary male and the troop did not seem to be strongly antagonistic.It can be assumed that the solitary male was moving according to certain pre-determined relationships or social contacts with the troop. The example of this solitary male shows the existence of the solitary male that follows and maintains contact with the troop, even outside the copulatory season.This study was sponsored by Scientific Research Grant No. 91620 of the Ministry of Education to the Japan Monkey Centre.  相似文献

To evaluate the influence of overwintering individuals of zooplankton on spring zooplankton communities, the dynamics of zooplankton communities with or without overwintering individuals were observed in experimental ponds from fall to spring. An insecticide, carbaryl, was used to regulate the overwintering individuals. In ponds which received insecticide applications in November or January, all cladoceran and rotiferan species were eliminated by the treatments and did not reappear until late March or early April, even when the chemical disappeared rapidly. The low water temperature may delayed the establishment of the populations from resting eggs. In these ponds, populations of various cladoceran and rotiferan species, which seemed to be originated from resting eggs, were built up in the spring. In control ponds,Daphnia ambigua orD. longispina overwintered as juveniles and adults and established a large spring population earlier than other cladocerans and rotifers overwintering as resting eggs. The latter zooplankters did not increase in the spring probably because their growth was suppressed by the precedingDaphnia species through competition. In nature, even if the number of overwintering individuals is small, they may have a potential to build up a large population earlier than the individuals hatching from resting eggs. As a result, the species which have overwintered as individuals seem to predominate in the spring and have a large influence on the spring zooplankton community.  相似文献

Changes in the content of cyclic heptapeptide hepatotoxins called microcystins were investigated during batch culture of two Microcystis species using high performance liquid chromatography. After adsorption to ODS-silica gel cartridges and elution with methanol, the toxins were analyzed and quantified by HPLC. 35 μg per 100 mg dry cells of microcystin-RR, 34 μg of -YR and 43 μg of -LR were present at the beginning of the exponential growth phase of M. viridis. Microcystin-RR increased markedly towards the end of the exponential phase with the maximum content of 112 μg per 100 mg cells was measured at the late stage of the exponential phase. A remarkable increase of microcystin-YR from 130 μg per 100 mg cells to 1020 μg was observed during the exponential phase of a highly toxic strain of M. aeruginosa. However no clear differences were found in the pattern of change among the three toxins during the growth course.  相似文献

Summary The gene responsible for multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN2A) has recently been assigned to the pericentromeric region of chromsome 10 in European Caucasian kindreds by linkage analysis using a DNA marker, interstitial retinol-binding protein 3 (RBP3). We have found tight linkage between the MEN2A and RBP3 loci in Japanese MEN2A kindreds. The maximum lod score is 5.19 at a recombination fraction of 0.00. This result suggests that mutation of a certain gene close to RBP3 is responsible for MEN2A irrespective of ethnic backgrounds.  相似文献

We reported that phosphorylation by either cAMP-dependent protein kinase or protein kinase C (Ca2+/phospholipid-dependent enzyme) in vitro induces disassembly of the desmin filaments (Inagaki, M., Gonda, Y., Matsuyama, M., Nishizawa, K., Nishi, Y., and Sato, C. (1988) J. Biol. Chem. 263, 5970-5978). For this subunit protein, Ser-29, Ser-35, and Ser-50 within the non-alpha-helical head domain were shown to be the sites of phosphorylation for cAMP-dependent protein kinase (Geisler, N., and Weber, K. (1988) EMBO J. 7, 15-20). In the present work, we identified the sites of desmin phosphorylated in vitro by other protein kinase which affects the filament structure. The protein kinase C-phosphorylated desmin was hydrolyzed with trypsin, and the phosphorylated peptides were isolated by reverse-phase chromatography. Sequential analysis of the purified phosphopeptides, together with the known primary sequence, revealed that Ser-12, Ser-29, Ser-38, and Ser-56 were phosphorylated by protein kinase C. All four sites are located within the non-alpha-helical head domain of desmin. Ser-12, Ser-38, and Ser-56, specifically phosphorylated by protein kinase C, have arginine residues at the carboxyl-terminal side (Arg-14, Arg-42, and Arg-59, respectively). Ser-29 phosphorylated by both protein kinase C and cAMP-dependent protein kinase has arginine residues at the amino and carboxyl termini (Arg-27 and Arg-33). These findings support the view that the head domain-specific phosphorylation strongly influences desmin filament structure; however, each protein kinase differed with regard to site recognition on this domain.  相似文献

Protoplasts were isolated from subcultured gametophytes of Equisetumarvense by treatment with Driselase and then cultured in vitro.Addition of activated charcoal (AC) to the culture medium enhancedthe rate of cell division, as well as the survival of both protoplastsand regenerated protoplasts. However, subsequent division ofcells was not observed after one or two cycles of replicationin cultures supplemented with AC. When regenerated protoplastswere transferred to fresh medium without AC 3 to 5 weeks afterthe first plating, the transferred cells formed rhizoids anddeveloped into small, young gametophytes without the prior formationof cell clusters or calluses. Furthermore, sprophytic shootsdifferentiated from the protoplast-derived gametophytes whenthey were cultured on medium supplemented with 6-benzylaminopurine(BA). The effects of inhibition of the synthesis of protein, mRNA or rRNA on the progression of the cell cycle have been analyzed in cultures of Catharanthus roseus in which cells were induced to divide in synchrony by the double phosphate starvation method. The partial inhibition of protein synthesis at the G1 phase by anisoniycio or cycloheximide caused the arrest of cells in the G1 phase or delayed the entry of cells into the S phase. When protein synthesis was partially inhibited at the S phase, cell division occurred to about the same extent as in the control. When asynchronously dividing cells were treated with cycloheximide, cells accumulated in the G1 phase, as shown by flow-cytometric analysis. The partial inhibition of mRNA synthesis by α-amanitin at the G1 phase caused the arrest of cells in the G1 phase, although partial inhibition of mRNA synthesis at the S phase had little effect on cell division. In the case of inhibition of synthesis of rRNA by actinomycin D at the G1 phase, initiation of DNA synthesis was observed, but no subsequent DNA synthesis or the division of cells occurred. However, the addition of actinomycin D during the S phase had no effect on cell division. These results suggest that specific protein(s), required for the progression of the cell cycle, are synthesized in the G1 phase, and that the mRNA(s) that encode these proteins are also synthesized at the G1 phase.  相似文献

This study documents age-related changes in the interactions of wild-born cynomolgus macaque mothers and their infants living in individual cages during the first 14 weeks of infant life. Body contact between mother and infant, maternal holding, and infant sucking were found to decrease, and the mothers showed an increased frequency of aggression toward their infants with age. These results were broadly similar to those reported for mother-infant interactions in other macaques living in social groups. Nevertheless, a clear difference between the present cynomolgus macaques and other macaques in social groups was apparent. The cynomolgus macaque mothers tended to permit their infants to move about freely without displaying maternal protectiveness such as restraint or retrieval, unlike other macaque mothers in social groups. Such maternal behaviors might derive from the experience of living in individual cages for many years and the relative safety of living in individual cages. The lack of maternal restraint and retrieval could be responsible for the observed sex differences in behavior: male infants moved more actively, and broke, and made contact with their mothers more frequently than did female infants. Moreover, mothers of female infants held and groomed them more frequently and were less aggressive toward them.  相似文献

The usefulness of the micronucleus assay for investigating the radiation response of hepatocytes was examined. The frequency was defined as the ratio of the total number of micronuclei to the number of hepatocytes examined. The dose-response curves were curvilinear after X rays and linear after neutrons. These dose-response curves were analyzed by a linear-quadratic model, frequency = aD + bD2 + c. The a/b ratio was 3.03 +/- 1.26 Gy following X irradiation. This value is within the range of the alpha/beta ratios reported by others using the clonogenic assay of hepatocytes. While the a/b value for neutrons was 24.3 +/- 11.7 Gy, the maximum relative biological effectiveness of neutrons was 6.30 +/- 2.53. Since the micronucleus assay is simple and rapid, it may be a good tool for evaluating the radiation response of hepatocytes in vivo.  相似文献
