Inclement weather struck Japan in 1993, permitting a natural experiment for examining the effect of weather conditions on nesting success and nestling growth of the bull-headed shrike, Lanius bucephalus. Aspects of the breeding biology of bull-headed shrikes in relation to weather conditions and timing of breeding in 1992 and 1993 were examined. The two breeding seasons were divided into two periods, early and late, in each year. While the probability of nest survival in nestling stages during both periods was almost equal, the probability of nest survival in the egg stage during the early period was significantly lower than that during the late period. In 1993, the probability of nestling survival during the late period was significantly lower than during the early period; the late period had larger fluctuations of precipitation and was colder than the same period in 1992. The number of disappeared nestlings positively correlated with mean precipitation per day. The greater part of the disappeared nestlings was the lightest in each brood. Late breeders fledged lighter young than the early breeders. Although shrikes adopted hatching asynchrony, the late breeders could not surmount the unpredictable inclement weather in 1993.  相似文献

How mate preferences evolve in the first place has been a major conundrum for sexual selection. Some hypotheses explaining this assume fitness benefit derived from subsequent generations. Major histocompatibility complex (MHC)‐based mate choice is a representative example of the mate choice that is associated with such trans‐generational mechanisms. To provide evidences for fitness benefit of MHC‐based mate choice, previous studies assessed the association between own MHC genotype and own fitness components. However, the association between MHC‐based mate choice in the parental generation and fitness components in the resultant offspring generation has only rarely been measured in wild populations. Focusing on the isolated population of the monogamous Ryukyu Scops Owl (Otus elegans interpositus) on Minami‐daito Island, Japan, we found evidence of MHC‐based mate choice. However, we found no evidence of MHC‐based mate choice increasing own reproductive success or offspring survival. This is a rare case study that directly examines the existence of the trans‐generational indirect benefit of MHC‐based mate choice for genetic compatibility from trans‐generational data in a wild bird population. By investigating the fitness benefits of mate choice, this study serves to facilitate our understanding of the evolution of MHC‐based mate choice.  相似文献

Three isocoumarin compounds (BV 1, 2 and 3) were isolated from the cultural broth of Aspergillus oniki 1784. BV 1 was mellein (3-methyl-8-hydroxy-3,4-dihydroisocoumarin). BV 2 and 3 were assigned to be 3-methyl-4,8-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydroisocoumarin, 3-methyl-3,8-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydroisocoumarin, respectively. These two compounds (BV 2, 3) were newly isolated. Also another component named BV 4 was proved to be 6-methylsalicylic acid.  相似文献

The effect of 3-nitropropionate (3-NPA)on oxidative phosphorylation by using mitochondria prepared from both rat liver and brain were investigated in connection with the toxicity of this material. It was found that 3-NPA inhibited oxidative phosphorylation. In this inhibition, the uptake of inorganic phosphate was blocked but the oxygen uptake was not influenced at all. Furthermore, increase in ATPase activity of intact mitochondria was shown by the addition of 3-NPA. Results showed that 3-NPA disturbed oxidative phosphorylation as an uncoupler. However, the degree of inhibition by 3-NPA was not so high in comparison with other well-known uncouplers.

Thus the toxicity of 3-NPA is not due to the inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation. 3-NPA also does not affect on cytochrome oxidase activity.  相似文献

The isolation of an H5N1 influenza A virus from a tree sparrow (Passer montanus) captured in East Java, Indonesia in 2010 is reported here. Its hemagglutinin and neuraminidase were genetically similar to those of human isolates from 2006-2007 in Indonesia. The finding of a tree sparrow H5N1 virus that possesses genetically similar surface molecules to those of human viruses highlights the importance of monitoring resident wild birds, as well as migratory birds, for pandemic preparedness.  相似文献

The ORF49 gene product (ORF49p) of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is likely a myristylated tegument protein, and its homologs are conserved across the herpesvirus subfamilies. The UL11 gene of herpes simplex virus type 1 and of pseudorabies virus and the UL99 gene of human cytomegalovirus are the homologs of ORF49 and have been well characterized by using mutant viruses; however, little research on the VZV ORF49 gene has been reported. Here we report on VZV ORF49p expression, subcellular localization, and effect on viral spread in vitro. ORF49p was expressed during the late phase of infection and located in the juxtanuclear region of the cytoplasm, where it colocalized mainly with the trans-Golgi network-associated protein. ORF49p was incorporated into virions and showed a molecular mass of 13 kDa in VZV-infected cells and virions. To elucidate the role of the ORF49 gene, we constructed a mutant virus that lacked a functional ORF49. No differences in plaque size or cell-cell spread were observed in human embryonic fibroblast cells, MRC-5 cells, infected with the wild-type or the mutant virus. However, the mutant virus showed diminished cell-cell infection in a human malignant melanoma cell line, MeWo cells. Therefore, VZV ORF49p is important for virus growth in MeWo cells, but not in MRC-5 cells. VZV may use different mechanisms for virus growth in MeWo and MRC-5 cells. If so, understanding the role of ORF49p should help elucidate how VZV accomplishes cell-cell infections in different cell types.  相似文献

The blue-breasted quail (Coturnix chinensis), the smallest species in the order Galliforms, is a candidate model animal for avian developmental engineering because it is precocious and prolific. This species requires 17 days to hatch and 8 to 9 weeks to mature to an adult body weight of about 50 g, whereas the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) requires 16 days to hatch and 6 to 8 weeks to mature to an adult body weight of 100 to 150 g. The early embryo is the most challenging embryonic stage in terms of culture and manipulation for avian biotechnology. We have evaluated various conditions for the culture of blue-breasted quail embryos from the blastoderm stage to hatching. A hatchability rate of 26% (10/39) is among the best of the various culture conditions examined in the present study and the embryo culture system should facilitate advances in avian biotechnology.  相似文献

From the vacuum distilled volatiles of shoyu, a neutral fraction was obtained. Shoyu was also directly extracted with dichloromethane and then the extract was separated into ten (A~J) fractions. The J fraction was a neutral one. The J fraction was further separated into twelve fractions by liquid column chromatography. All fractions obtained were analyzed by gas chromatography and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Consequently, 142 components were identified, 82 of which have not been reported previously as volatile constituents of shoyu. The identified compounds were 37 hydrocarbons, 22 alcohols, 22 carbonyls, 22 esters, 12 furans, 6 sulfurous compounds, 1 pyrone, 5 phenols, 1 furanone, 1 acid, 1 lactone and 12 other compounds. From the results of quantitative analysis and organoleptic evaluation, phenylacetal-dehyde is considered to be most important in the neutral fraction.  相似文献
