Synthesis of 9-β-d-Glucopyranosyl-Adenine-6′-Phosphate

Synthesis of 9-β-d-glucopyranosyl-adenine-6′-phosphate is described. The method developed here involves the process of condensation of base (chloromercuri-6-benzamidopurine) (I) with phosphorylated sugar (2,3,4-tri-O-acetyl-6-diphenylphosphoryl-α-d-glucopyranosyl bromide) (II). This reaction gives crystalline 6-benzamido-9-(2′,3′,4′-tri-O-acetyl-6′-diphenylphosphoryl-β-d-glucopyranosyl)-purine (III) in high yield, which is converted to the desired nucleotide by alkaline hydrolysis.     

Synthesis and Juvenile Hormone Activity of Some Terpenoid Phenyl Ethers

Thirty eight new compounds with juvenile hormone (JH) activity were synthesized and evaluated biologically on Bombyx mori L. Among them, the activities of 7,8-epoxy-4,8-dimethyl-1 -(p-ethylphenoxy)-3-undecene and 7,8-epoxy-4,8-dimethyl-l-(p-methylphenoxy)-3-undencene were proved to be more than two thousand times as high as that of the C₁₈-Cecropia JH (mixed isomers). Structure-activity relationship of these compounds was discussed.     

Synthesis of Isocoumarins

A synthesis of oospolactone (3,4-dimethyl-8-hydroxyisocoumarin), a metabolite of Oospora astringenes, is described.     

Synthesis and Biological Activity of Analogs of the Cecropia Juvenile Hormone with Different Alkyl Substituents at C-7 and C-11

Sixteen new Cecropia juvenile hormone (JH) analogs with different alkyl substituents at C–7 and C–11 were synthesized as stereoisomeric mixtures. The epoxides with n-propyl or n-butyl and methyl groups at C-11 and methyl or ethyl group at C-7 showed high JH activity on Bombyx mori L. Structure-activity relationship of the JH analogs was discussed.     

Molecular cloning and functional characterization of avaB, a gene encoding Vam6p/Vps39p-like protein in Aspergillus nidulans

It has been demonstrated that Saccharomyces cerevisiae Vam6p/Vps39p plays a critical role in the tethering steps of vacuolar membrane fusion by facilitating guanine nucleotide exchange on small guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase) Vam4p/Ypt7p. We report here the identification and characterization of a novel protein in Aspergillus nidulans, AvaB, that exhibits similarity to Vam6p/Vps39p and plays a critical role in vacuolar morphogenesis in A. nidulans. AvaB is comprised of 1058 amino acids with amino-terminal citron homology (CNH) and central clathrin homology (CLH) domains, as observed for other Vam6p/Vps39p family proteins. Disruption of avaB in A. nidulans resulted in the fragmentation of vacuoles and reduced growth rate under various growth conditions, implying its importance in maintaining vacuolar morphology and function. Yeast two-hybrid analysis demonstrated the interaction of AvaB with AvaA, a Vam4p/Ypt7p homolog in A. nidulans, as well as the homooligomer formation of AvaB, suggesting that AvaB performs its function through hetero- or homophilic protein-protein interactions.     

Paramecium decaurelia and Paramecium dodecaurelia from the P. aurelia spp. complex in Japan

The presence of Paramecium decaurelia (three strains) and Paramecium dodecaurelia (two strains) were recorded in Japan, for the first time in this country and outside the USA.
