Three antibacterial proteins were induced when the body wall of Sarcophaga peregrina (flesh-fly) larvae was injured with a hypodermic needle. These proteins were separated and one was purified to homogeneity. The molecular weight of the purified protein was 5000 and its amino acid composition was similar to that of cecropins, which are antibacterial proteins in Hyalophora cecropia (cecropia moth) pupae. This protein was found to have bactericidal activity and to be effective at a concentration of 0.1 micrograms/ml against certain Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.  相似文献

Abstract. The amino acid and phospholipid contents in the head of adult Sarcophaga peregrina (flesh-fly) were measured with age. Only aspartic acid was found to increase significantly with aging. A significant difference was also detected in the fatty acid composition of the phospholipids. Phospholipids isolated from old flies contained more unsaturated fatty acid than young flies, suggesting that the properties of the membrane of head cells change with age. These changes were observed irrespective of sex or rearing conditions. Thus, it is possible that certain metabolic pathways in post-mitotic cells are selectively affected by aging.  相似文献

Interactions between microbial species, including competition and mutualism, influence the abundance and distribution of the related species. For example, metabolic cooperation among multiple bacteria plays a major role in the maintenance of consortia. This study aims to clarify how two bacterial species coexist in a syntrophic association involving the degradation of the pesticide fenitrothion. To elucidate essential mechanisms for maintaining a syntrophic association, we employed a mathematical model based on an experimental study, because experiment cannot elucidate various conditions for two bacterial coexistence. We isolated fenitrothion-degrading Sphingomonas sp. TFEE and its metabolite of 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol (3M4N)-degrading Burkholderia sp. MN1 from a fenitrothion-treated soil microcosm. Neither bacterium can completely degrade fenitrothion alone, but they can utilize the second intermediate, methylhydroquinone (MHQ). Burkholderia sp. MN1 excretes a portion of MHQ during the degradation of 3M4N, from which Sphingomonas sp. TFEE carries out degradation to obtain carbon and energy. Based on experimental findings, we developed mathematical models that represent the syntrophic association involving the two bacteria. We found that the two bacteria are characterized by the mutualistic degradation of fenitrothion. Dynamics of two bacteria are determined by the degree of cooperation between two bacteria (i.e., supply of 3M4N by Sphingomonas sp. TFEE and excretion of MHQ by Burkholderia sp. MN1) and the initial population sizes. The syntrophic association mediates the coexistence of the two bacteria under the possibility of resource competition for MHQ, and robustly facilitates the maintenance of ecosystem function in terms of degrading xenobiotics. Thus, the mathematical analysis and numerical computations based on the experiment indicate the key mechanisms for coexistence of Sphingomonas sp. TFEE and Burkholderia sp. MN1 in syntrophic association involving fenitrothion degradation.  相似文献

Among New World monkeys, more or less sexual dimorphism exists in the dentition, especially in the Cebidae. On the other hand, the Callitrichidae includingSaguinus are said to be characterized by a broad lack of sexual dimorphism with the exception of the reproductive organs. In the present article, sexual dimorphism in the dentition of someSaguinus species was reconfirmed using univariate and multivariate analytical methods. The results of the analysis were as follows: (1) there is no sexual dimorphism in the canine tooth size, except for the upper canine ofS. geoffroyi and lower canine ofS. mystax; (2) the overall tooth size difference between males and females is slight or none inS. geoffroyi, S. leucopus, andS. fuscicollis, relatively small inS. oedipus andS. mystax, and rather larger inS. midas; (3) an overall difference in shape factor between both sexes exists in all species ofSaguinus to a greater or lesser extent; (4) although only slight sexual dimorphism is recognized in the canine tooth itself, sexual dimorphism does exist in some adjacent teeth of the canine in a few species; and (5) there are some interspecific differences in the magnitude of the sexual dimorphism of theSaguinus dentition and these differences are more evident in species inhabiting the peripheral regions of the distribution areas of this genus. Taking all the evidence obtained into account, the sexual dimorphism in theSaguinus dentition must be re-investigated in comparison with other genera of the Callitrichidae.  相似文献

Administration of tryptophan or hydrocortisone to rats caused a several-fold increase in tryptophan-2,3-dioxygenase activity in the liver. Highly purified lysosomes were isolated from livers of tryptophan- or hydrocortisone-treated animals as well as the control rats. Immunoblotting of lysosomal proteins with anti-tryptophan-2,3-dioxygenase showed 48 kDa band, corresponding to the subunit molecular weight of the enzyme. The relative amount of the immuno-reactive substance in the lysosomes from hydrocortisone-treated rats was 3 times higher than the control while the value in the lysosomes from tryptophan-treated rats was essentially the same as in the control. These results indicate that administration of tryptophan renders cytosolic tryptophan-2,3-dioxygenase less vulnerable to lysosomal uptake and causes an accumulation of the enzyme in the cytosol.  相似文献

The postembryonic development of the flesh fly was studied using high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance imaging. Because this development occurs in a puparium, this process cannot be observed directly using standard histological techniques. The remodelling of histolysing larval tissues to developing imaginal tissues including the yellow body, a transient alimentary structure, and the integration of the developed adult structure were revealed in the images. Most surprisingly it was found that a large gas space that forms in the central region of the prepupa moves to the dorso-anterial region in less than 5 min due to the larval–pupal apolysis together with separation of the developing pupal epidermis from the puparium.  相似文献
