Open Science calls for transparent science and involvement of various stakeholders. Here are examples of and advice for meaningful stakeholder engagement. Subject Categories: Economics, Law & Politics, History & Philosophy of Science

The concepts of Open Science and Responsible Research and Innovation call for a more transparent and collaborative science, and more participation of citizens. The way to achieve this is through cooperation with different actors or “stakeholders”: individuals or organizations who can contribute to, or benefit from research, regardless of whether they are researchers themselves or not. Examples include funding agencies, citizens associations, patients, and policy makers (https://aquas.gencat.cat/web/.content/minisite/aquas/publicacions/2018/how_measure_engagement_research_saris1_aquas2018.pdf). Such cooperation is even more relevant in the current, challenging times—even apart from a global pandemic—when pseudo‐science, fake news, nihilist attitudes, and ideologies too often threaten social and technological progress enabled by science. Stakeholder engagement in research can inform and empower citizens, help render research more socially acceptable, and enable policies grounded on evidence‐based knowledge. Beyond, stakeholder engagement is also beneficial to researchers and to research itself. In a recent survey, the majority of scientists reported benefits from public engagement (Burns et al, 2021). This can include increased mutual trust and mutual learning, improved social relevance of research, and improved adoption of results and knowledge (Cottrell et al, 2014). Finally, stakeholder engagement is often regarded as an important factor to sustain public investment in the life sciences (Burns et al, 2021).

Here, we discuss different levels of stakeholder engagement by way of example, presenting various activities organized by European research institutions. Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) or intrathecal (i.t.) administration of morphine to mice antagonized the abdominal constriction induced by an i.p. injection of endothelin-1 (ET-1; 0.1 mg/kg). The ED50 values (95% confidence intervals) were 39.3 (16.5-80.2) ng and 1.5 (0.8-4.9) ng, respectively. The antagonism of ET-1-induced abdominal constriction by morphine was blocked by naloxone (1.0 mg/kg, s.c.) or by 24 h pretreatment with beta-funaltrexamine (beta-FNA; 8.84 micrograms, i.c.v.). These results demonstrate for the first time that the stimulus resulting from an i.p. injection of ET-1 is transmitted via ascending (pain) pathways that are subject to attenuation by opioid (mu) receptor activation. Hence, ET-1-induced abdominal constriction is a new pain model which, given the other pharmacology of ET-1, might represent a unique model with potential specific utility for anginal or other visceral pain.  相似文献

Proxies of adaptive traits for resistance to drought were discovered among original annual ring density variables in Douglas fir.

Abstract

A comparison of dead and surviving Douglas fir trees following the 2003 drought was made to define proxies of adaptive traits for resistance to drought. Increment cores were sampled from trees from three French regions: Centre, Midi-Pyrénées and Burgundy. Original tree-ring variables were calculated, based on a sliding density criterion dividing the microdensity profile into high- and low-density segments. Tree rings were analysed at each site in a number of consecutive annual rings before the 2003 drought event. Comparison between pairs of surviving and dead trees and between pairs of randomly selected trees (whether dead or alive) supports the evidence of systematic dissimilarities between surviving and dead trees in a number of original density variables. Correlation analysis between original and conventional ring density variables indicates a weak association. We found that the surviving trees were denser than the dead trees in all three sites, but that the denser part of the ring varied from region to region. We identified several original density variables intended to be used as proxies of adaptive traits in future studies of genetic determinism of Douglas fir resistance to drought.  相似文献

Aims

The partitioning of the total soil CO2 efflux into its two main components: respiration from roots (and root-associated organisms) and microbial respiration (by means of soil organic matter (SOM) and litter decomposition), is a major need in soil carbon dynamics studies in order to understand if a soil is a net sink or source of carbon.

Methods

The heterotrophic component of the CO2 efflux was estimated for 11 forest sites as the ratio between the carbon stocks of different SOM pools and previously published (Δ14C derived) turnover times. The autotrophic component, including root and root-associated respiration, was calculated by subtracting the heterotrophic component from total soil chamber measured CO2 efflux.

Results

Results suggested that, on average, 50.4 % of total soil CO2 efflux was derived from the respiration of the living roots, 42.4 % from decomposition of the litter layers and less than 10 % from decomposition of belowground SOM.

Conclusions

The Δ14C method proved to be an efficient tool by which to partition soil CO2 efflux and quantify the contribution of the different components of soil respiration. However the average calculated heterotrophic respiration was statistically lower compared with two previous studies dealing with soil CO2 efflux partitioning (one performed in the same study area; the other a meta-analysis of soil respiration partitioning). These differences were probably due to the heterogeneity of the SOM fraction and to a sub-optimal choice of the litter sampling period.  相似文献

The NAD+‐dependent deacetylase SIRT1 can be oncogenic or tumor suppressive depending on the tissue. Little is known about the role of SIRT1 in non‐small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), one of the deadliest cancers, that is frequently associated with mutated K‐RAS. Therefore, we investigated the effect of SIRT1 on K‐RAS‐driven lung carcinogenesis. We report that SIRT1 protein levels are downregulated by oncogenic K‐RAS in a MEK and PI3K‐dependent manner in mouse embryo fibroblasts (MEFs), and in human lung adenocarcinoma cell lines. Furthermore, Sirt1 overexpression in mice delays the appearance of K‐RasG12V‐driven lung adenocarcinomas, reducing the number and size of carcinomas at the time of death and extending survival. Consistently, lower levels of SIRT1 are associated with worse prognosis in human NSCLCs. Mechanistically, analysis of mouse Sirt1‐Tg pneumocytes, isolated shortly after K‐RasG12V activation, reveals that Sirt1 overexpression alters pathways involved in tumor development: proliferation, apoptosis, or extracellular matrix organization. Our work demonstrates a tumor suppressive role of SIRT1 in the development of K‐RAS‐driven lung adenocarcinomas in mice and humans, suggesting that the SIRT1–K‐RAS axis could be a therapeutic target for NSCLCs.  相似文献

The histological study of galls may provide information on the evolution of the organisms that induce them. The walls of two aphid-induced galls on leaves of Ulmus minor were therefore studied histologically: a globose gall induced by Tetraneura ulmi and a pseudogall induced by Eriosoma ulmi. Galls are regarded as extended phenotypes of aphids, and therefore, they can be used as tools for phylogenetic studies. The walls of the galls induced by T. ulmi are not reminiscent of the ungalled leaf structure of U. minor in any area, showing both cellular hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Galls induced by E. ulmi resemble the leaf structure of U. minor in certain aspects, but in most aspects they do not, showing only cellular hypertrophy. Processes of growth and differentiation are observed in both galls. Based on the findings of this study and other recent publications, we propose to categorize the galls induced by aphids into four types: (1) pseudogalls; (2) closed galls with a “door”; (3) closed galls determined by active processes of growth and differentiation of the lamina of the leaf; and (4) closed galls determined by active processes of growth and differentiation of the midvein.  相似文献
