NMR assignment of an intrinsically disordered protein under physiological conditions: the 18.5 kDa isoform of murine myelin basic protein

We report the NMR assignment of 18.5 kDa recombinant murine myelin basic protein (MBP) in 100 mM KCl as a prerequisite to structural analyses of its Ca²⁺-dependent interaction with calmodulin.

La maladie thromboembolique veineuse (MTE) peut débuter chez l’adulte jeune. La symptomatologie comporte essentiellement des thromboses veineuses profondes récidivantes compliquées ou non d’embolie pulmonaire. L’incidence des thromboses augmente avec l’age.     

Dialect use in large assemblies: a study in European starling Sturnus vulgaris roosts

Dialects may signal social or population identity and increase tolerance within communities. We hypothesized that in European starling Sturnus vulgaris communal roosts, birds coming from the same breeding area, i.e. dialectal zone, might tend to stay together within the roost. Recordings were performed in the colonies, revealed in earlier studies, multiple dialects and small sectors where birds shared the same variants at the different levels. We also performed recordings in different locations within night roosts. The dialects recorded in the roosts were the same as those recorded at nest sites during the day and they were not distributed randomly within roosts: birds from the same geographical diurnal origin would gather and stay together, either because they arrived together or were attracted to their dialect. Although our results have to be confirmed by the study of identifiable individuals, we propose original lines of thought on roost structuring and on the role of song dialects.     

Long-term effects of soybean protease inhibitors on digestive enzymes, survival and learning abilities of honeybees

We have investigated the effects of long-term ingestion of two serine proteinase inhibitors (PIs), the Kunitz Soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI) and the Bowman-Birk inhibitor (BBI) on survival, learning abilities involved in the foraging behaviour, and digestive physiology of the honeybee (Apis mellifera L., Hymenoptera). A threshold-dose was established, above which adverse effects of long-term ingestion of the PIs tested are to be expected. The experiments reported herein could be extended to other PIs or gene products used to confer insect resistance, and be part of a general procedure used to assess the innocuousness of transgenic melliferous plants to honeybees.     

Assignment of three rat integrin genes to Chromosome 19 (ITGB1), Chromosome 3 (ITGA4), and Chromosome 7 (ITGA5)

By means of somatic cell, hybrids segregating rat chromosomes, we determined the chromosome localization of three rat 1 family integrin genes. ITGB1 was assigned to Chromosome (Chr) 19, ITGA4 to Chr 3, and ITGA5 to Chr 7. These chromosome assignments reveal or confirm homology between two pairs of rat and human chromosomes (rat Chr 3-human Chr 2; rat Chr 7-human Chr 12).     

Functional interactions between subunits of aspartate aminotransferase: Formation of monoliganded dimers during titration of the apoenzyme by pyridoxal 5′-phosphate

The interaction between apoaspartate aminotransferase and pyridoxal 5′-phosphate at either pH 8.3 (active form of holoenzyme) or pH 5.0 (inactive form) corresponds to a strong quenching of tryptophan fluorescence. The hybrid molecule containing one pyridoxal 5′-phosphate bound per dimer has been prepared both by electrofocusing and by ion exchange chromatography. At both pH values, the fluorescence of the hybrid is 80 to 85% of the arithmetic mean between the fluorescence of the symmetrical holoenzyme and apoenzyme. This is direct evidence of energy transfer from tryptophan residues of the subunit of apoenzyme to the coenzyme of the other subunit.Fluorescence intensity was used to determine the quantity of hybrid holoapoenzyme formed during titration of the apoenzyme by pyridoxal 5′-phosphate. At pH 8.3 a non-linear decrease in the fluorescence is observed, corresponding to 60% of hybrid for the point of half reactivation; this value corresponds to the percentage obtained by electrofocusing (Schlegel & Christen, 1974). At pH 5.0, the decrease in fluorescence is linear during pyridoxal binding; this indicates that at this pH the hybrid is never obtained at detectable concentrations. These results indicate strong interactions between subunits of aspartate aminotransferase corresponding to a weakly negative co-operativity at alkaline pH and a positive cooperativity at acidic pH for the binding of the coenzyme.
