Adult plum curculios, Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst), were dislodged from branches of apple trees by tapping on 14 days between blossom petal fall and 3 weeks thereafter. They fell onto a small square of framed white cloth that was quickly but carefully moved to a position beneath or adjacent to the canopy of another apple tree.There, adults were observed for 50-min periods from 0800–1950 h for propensity to fly from or walk off the cloth or move to hide beneath foliage on the cloth. At each position, the mean time from observation initiation until flight, walking off or hiding did not differ significantly among these behaviors (averaging 21–30 min), but significantly more flew (31–40%) than crawled off (16–19%) or hid (18–20%). Substantial walking off but no flights occurred at air temperatures below 20 °C, whereas at temperatures of 20 °C or greater, propensity for flight was usually significantly greater than that for walking off.Flights were predominantly toward the tree canopy or inter-tree space, with only a small proportion (17% or less) toward the tree trunk or (in a parallel study) toward an unbaited black pyramid trap (mimicking a tree trunk). Walking was overwhelmingly toward the tree trunk or a black pyramid trap adjacent to the trunk. Our observations lead us to conclude that unbaited black pyramid traps next to trunks of host trees (the most attractive position) can be effective at air temperatures below 20 °C by attracting plum curculio adults that would have entered host trees by walking toward and up tree trunks.Such traps appear to be less effective at 20 °C or greater because under such conditions, adults tend to enter host trees by flight into the canopy.  相似文献

Summary The segregation of factor B(BF)F subtypes was analyzed in conjunction with other MHC markers in 15 families with 89 offspring. Informative data for BF F subtypes were obtained from 11 families, 6 of them with known recombinant individuals for the HLA-B/DR/GLO region. The subtypes did not contribute further to the localization of the cross-overs, but followed the known segregation of conventional BF allotypes. In 2 families of one kinship, the recognition of heterozygous BF*FAFB individuals could be established following the inclusion of three generations. The rarer of the two BF F subtype alleles, BF*FA, is positively associated with the HLA haplotypes BW62, CW3, C4A*3 and A29, CWX, B44, C4A*3, B*1, DR7. BF F subtypes are regarded as a very useful additional tool for studies of MHC organization and disease association.  相似文献

The Mehler–Ascorbate–Peroxidase cycle is a protection system against reactive oxygen species (ROS) occurring during over-excitation of the photosynthetic apparatus. In the cultivated tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum, long-term chilling under moderate light leads to oxidation of the Calvin cycle key enzyme, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (rubisco), presumably by generation of ROS. In contrast, high-altitude lines of the wild tomato species L. peruvianum were tolerant against the same chilling stress. In the present study, we analysed leaf contents of antioxidants (ascorbate, glutathione) and activities of enzymes of the Mehler–Ascorbate–Peroxidase cycle in the two Lycopersicon species. While antioxidant levels and activities of chloroplast superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), both inducible by chilling stress, were similar in chilling-tolerant and chilling-sensitive genotypes, chilled L. esculentum showed lower glutathione reductase (GR) activities than high-altitude L. peruvianum. We constructed transgenic plants overexpressing an Escherichia coli GR in the chloroplast (approximately 60-fold of the wild-type (WT) activity). However, these plants resembled identical chilling sensitivity of the photosynthetic apparatus as WT plants as measured after a photoinhibition treatment and by the effect of long-term chilling on rubisco activity. We conclude that the Mehler–Ascorbate–Peroxidase cycle is not the limiting factor for the sensitivity of the photosynthetic apparatus of L. esculentum towards long-term chilling under moderate light. We suggest that a possible cause for the higher chilling tolerance of L. peruvianum is prevention of ROS formation by better conversion of light energy to photochemistry at suboptimal temperatures.  相似文献

Syngas fermentation with acetogens is known to produce mainly acetate and ethanol efficiently. Co-cultures with chain elongating bacteria making use of these products are a promising approach to produce longer-chain alcohols. Synthetic co-cultures with identical initial cell concentrations of Clostridium carboxidivorans and Clostridium kluyveri were studied in batch-operated stirred-tank bioreactors with continuous CO/CO2-gassing and monitoring of the cell counts of both clostridia by flow cytometry after fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH-FC). At 800 mbar CO, chain elongation activity was observed at pH 6.0, although growth of C. kluyveri was restricted. Organic acids produced by C. kluyveri were reduced by C. carboxidivorans to the corresponding alcohols butanol and hexanol. This resulted in a threefold increase in final butanol concentration and enabled hexanol production compared with a mono-culture of C. carboxidivorans. At 100 mbar CO, growth of C. kluyveri was improved; however, the capacity of C. carboxidivorans to form alcohols was reduced. Because of the accumulation of organic acids, a constant decay of C. carboxidivorans was observed. The measurement of individual cell concentrations in co-culture established in this study may serve as an effective tool for knowledge-based identification of optimum process conditions for enhanced formation of longer-chain alcohols by clostridial co-cultures.  相似文献
