Background

Divergence in trophic niche between the sexes may function to reduce competition between the sexes (“intersexual niche partitioning hypothesis”), or may be result from differential selection among the sexes on maximizing reproductive output (“sexual selection hypothesis”). The latter may lead to higher energy demands in females driven by fecundity selection, while males invest in mate searching. We tested predictions of the two hypotheses underlying intersexual trophic niche partitioning in a natural population of spiders. Zodarion jozefienae spiders specialize on Messor barbarus ants that are polymorphic in body size and hence comprise potential trophic niches for the spider, making this system well-suited to study intersexual trophic niche partitioning.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Comparative analysis of trophic morphology (the chelicerae) and body size of males, females and juveniles demonstrated highly female biased SSD (Sexual Size Dimorphism) in body size, body weight, and in the size of chelicerae, the latter arising from sex-specific growth patterns in trophic morphology. In the field, female spiders actively selected ant sub-castes that were larger than the average prey size, and larger than ants captured by juveniles and males. Female fecundity was highly positively correlated with female body mass, which reflects foraging success during the adult stage. Females in laboratory experiments preferred the large ant sub-castes and displayed higher capture efficiency. In contrast, males occupied a different trophic niche and showed reduced foraging effort and reduced prey capture and feeding efficiency compared with females and juveniles.

Conclusions/Significance

Our data indicate that female-biased dimorphism in trophic morphology and body size correlate with sex-specific reproductive strategies. We propose that intersexual trophic niche partitioning is shaped primarily by fecundity selection in females, and results from sex-differences in the route to successful reproduction where females are selected to maximize energy intake and fecundity, while males switch from foraging to invest in mating effort.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to identify the causative genetic lesion in two apparently unrelated newborns having lethal lactic acidosis, multi-organ failure and congenital malformations including interrupted aortic arch, who exhibited mild methylmalonic aciduria, combined mitochondrial respiratory chain deficiency, and marked muscle mitochondrial DNA depletion. A novel mutation in the SUCLG1 gene was identified. Phenotype severity in Succinate-CoA ligase dysfunction appears to be more correlated to the muscle mtDNA content than to the tissue distribution of the heterodimer subunits. Prominent impairment of mitochondrial respiratory chain may result in deep ravages in developmental tissues leading to multiple organ failure and malformations.  相似文献

A survey for natural entomopathogenic fungi of the Chagas disease vector Triatoma infestans was conducted in five provinces of Argentina since 2001. Nymphs (1.5%) and adults (3.3%) infected with a strain of the fungus Beauveria bassiana were found at Dean Funes, Córdoba province, Argentina. Field collected insects that died in the laboratory were maintained in moist chambers and incubated at 22 °C. Beauveria bassiana from infected insects was cultured on SDAY media. Pathogenicity tests were conducted with a conidial suspension (1 × 107 conidia/ml) of this isolate on T. infestans adults. A mortality rate of 100% was obtained at 15 days post-infection. This is the first record of natural infection of T. infestans by B. bassiana.  相似文献

Infection, disease relapse, graft failure, and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) are significant adverse events associated with allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. Donor natural killer (NK) cells may be an ideal cell type for prevention or treatment of all these adverse events. Therefore, we investigated the phenotype and function of human NK cells purified by using a clinical-scale immunomagnetic method. We found that the NK cell purification procedures did not adversely affect the expression of killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors, adhesion molecules, intracellular cytokines, perforin, and granzyme B. Purified NK cells had extensive proliferative capacity and potent antitumor activity when assessed using an immunodeficient mouse model. While all mice transplanted with unpurified mononuclear cells developed GVHD, none of the mice transplanted with purified NK cells did. NK cells were highly susceptible to lysis by antithymocyte globulin (ATG), whereas G-CSF had a minimal effect on their natural cytotoxicity. These results support future clinical investigation of the use of purified NK cells for adoptive immunotherapy in the absence of ATG.  相似文献

Data from a number of studies and trials have shown that different conjugated linoleic acids (CLA's) may produce beneficial effects on cancer, atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes and changes in body composition. Despite the increasing knowledge about CLA's implications on health, the mechanism of action of these fatty acids is not completely understood. Moreover, human studies indicate that some of these beneficial effects are considerably less evident than anticipated from mice studies, while the efficacy and safety of dietary supplements containing CLA have been questioned in some intervention trials. Recently, it has been suggested that the anti-carcinogenic and anti-atherosclerosis effects of CLA's stem from its anti-inflammatory properties. Because inflammatory responses are associated with the pathophysiology of many diseases, including obesity and the metabolic syndrome, the investigation in this area is of growing interest in recent years.  相似文献

Plasma level of the protein VAP-1/SSAO (Vascular Adhesion Protein-1/Semicarbazide-Sensitive Amine Oxidase) is increased in diabetes and/or obesity and may be related to vascular complications associated to these pathologies. The aim of this work was to complete a preceding study where we described the role played by some hormones or metabolites, implicated in diabetes and/or obesity, in the regulation of the release of VAP-1/SSAO by 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Here we focused on the previously observed effect produced by TNFalpha in the release of VAP-1/SSAO and studied the effect of a beta-adrenergic compound, isoproterenol. Both compounds stimulated the release of VAP-1/SSAO to the culture medium but had a different effect on the VAP-1/SSAO membrane form. While TNFalpha produced a decrease on VAP-1/SSAO membrane form content, isoproterenol did not modify it. We thus observed two different ways of regulation of the release of VAP-1/SSAO by 3T3-L1 adipocytes by metabolites implicated in diabetes and adipose tissue physiopathology. Our work permits a better understanding of this increased plasma VAP-1/SSAO levels observed in diabetes.  相似文献

Although chemoreception plays an important role in social organization of many lizards, only a few studies have examined the chemicals found in secretions used for intraspecific communication. We report the composition of the secretion of the femoral glands of males of the spiny-footed lizard (Acanthodactylus erythrurus). On the basis of mass spectra, obtained by GC/MS, we identified 45 lipophilic compounds, including several alcohols ranging from 10 to 29 carbon atoms (mainly hexacosanol and tetracosanol), steroids (mainly cholesterol and dehydrocholesterol), n-C9 to n-C20 carboxylic acids, esters of carboxylic acids, and minor components such as lactones, ketones, squalene and a-tocopherol. Some of these compounds are reported for the first time in lizards. Adult and subadult males differed in the composition of secretions, with C9 to C15 carboxylic acids being more abundant in younger than in older lizards, whereas C16 to C20 carboxylic acids were more abundant in older lizards. Also, older lizards had significant lower proportions of cholesterol and campesterol but higher proportions of dehydrocholesterol.  相似文献

Guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) regulate the activity of small GTP-binding proteins in a variety of biological processes. We have identified a gain-of-function mutation in the Caenorhabditis elegans GEF ect-2, the homologue of the mammalian ect2 proto-oncogene that has an essential role during cytokinesis. Here, we report that, in addition to its known function during mitosis, ECT-2 promotes the specification of the primary vulval cell fate by activating RAS/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling before the end of the S-phase. Epistasis analysis indicates that ECT-2 crosstalks to the canonical RAS/MAPK cascade upstream of the RAS GEF SOS-1 by means of a RHO-1 signalling pathway. Our results raise the possibility that the transforming activity of the mammalian ect-2 oncogene could be due to hyperactivation of the RAS/MAPK pathway.  相似文献
