Pseudomonas syringae strains deliver diverse type III effector proteins into host cells, where they can act as virulence factors. Although the functions of the majority of type III effectors are unknown, several have been shown to interfere with plant basal defense mechanisms. Type III effectors also could contribute to bacterial virulence by enhancing nutrient uptake and pathogen adaptation to the environment of the host plant. We demonstrate that the type III effector HopAM1 (formerly known as AvrPpiB) enhances the virulence of a weak pathogen in plants that are grown under drought stress. This is the first report of a type III effector that aids pathogen adaptation to water availability in the host plant. Expression of HopAM1 makes transgenic Ws-0 Arabidopsis hypersensitive to abscisic acid (ABA) for stomatal closure and germination arrest. Conditional expression of HopAM1 in Arabidopsis also suppresses basal defenses. ABA responses overlap with defense responses and ABA has been shown to suppress defense against P. syringae pathogens. We propose that HopAM1 aids P. syringae virulence by manipulation of ABA responses that suppress defense responses. In addition, host ABA responses enhanced by type III delivery of HopAM1 protect developing bacterial colonies inside leaves from osmotic stress. 相似文献

The occurrence of group-living behaviour has often been explained by the benefits individuals receive through cooperation; including increased reproductive output, vigilance against predators, and load-lightening behaviour. However, to fully understand the benefits of group-living, it is important to quantify the costs of living alone. Here, we look at the fate of floaters (individuals who have no fixed territory and remain alone for extended periods) in a population of cooperatively breeding pied babblers Turdoides bicolor . We found that individuals spent less time foraging and more time vigilant for predators when found as a floater compared to when they were in a group. Consequently, they suffered a continuous loss of body mass, with long-term floaters suffering the highest losses. This had a long-term effect: floaters that eventually did regain a position in a group usually entered as helpers, in contrast to dispersers, who usually entered a new group as breeders. This high cost of living alone highlights the benefits of group-living and may help to understand patterns of delayed dispersal in some social species. 相似文献

Bacteria that cause cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) are perhaps the most widespread parasites of arthropods. CI symbionts cause reproductive failure when infected males mate with females that are either uninfected or infected with a different, incompatible strain. Until recently, CI was known to be caused only by the alpha-proteobacterium Wolbachia. Here we present the first study of the population biology of Cardinium, a recently discovered symbiont in the Bacteroidetes that causes CI in the parasitic wasp Encarsia pergandiella (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae). Cardinium occurs at high frequency ( approximately 92%) in the field. Using wasps that were recently collected in the field, we measured parameters that are crucial for understanding how CI spreads and is maintained in its host. CI Cardinium exhibits near-perfect rates of maternal transmission, causes a strong reduction in viable offspring in incompatible crosses, and induces a high fecundity cost, with infected females producing 18% fewer offspring in the first 4 days of reproduction. We found no evidence for paternal transmission or horizontal transmission of CI Cardinium through parasitism of an infected conspecific. No evidence for cryptic parthenogenesis in infected females was found, nor was sex allocation influenced by infection. We incorporated our laboratory estimates into a model of CI dynamics. The model predicts a high stable equilibrium, similar to what we observed in the field. Interestingly, our model also predicts a high threshold frequency of CI invasion (20% for males and 24% for females), below which the infection is expected to be lost. We consider how this threshold may be overcome, focusing in particular on the sensitivity of CI models to fecundity costs. An assessment of the global freshwater crab diversity is presented. A total of 1,476 species in 14 families are currently
known from all zoogeographical regions (except Antarctica), including 1,306 species in eight exclusively freshwater families
(Pseudothelphusidae, Trichodactylidae, Potamonautidae, Deckeniidae, Platythelphusidae, Potamidae, Gecarcinucidae and Parathelphusidae).
Estimates of true freshwater crab diversity including likely numbers of undescribed taxa suggest that the field remains largely
in a “discovery” phase. Main ideas on the origins, diversification, and phylogeny of true freshwater crabs are briefly discussed.
The economic importance of freshwater crabs is also highlighted.

Chemical investigation of the mycelium of Edenia gomezpompae, a newly discovered endophytic fungus isolated from the leaves of Callicarpa acuminata (Verbenaceae) collected from the ecological reserve El Eden, Quintana Roo, Mexico, resulted in the isolation of four naphthoquinone spiroketals, including three new compounds and palmarumycin CP2 (4). We elucidated the structures of the metabolites by extensive NMR spectroscopy studies, including DEPT, COSY, NOESY, HSQC, HMBC, and chiroptical methods. The trivial names proposed for these compounds are preussomerin EG1 (1), preussomerin EG2 (2) and preussomerin EG3 (3). In addition, the X-ray data for 4 were obtained. The bioactivity of the mycelial organic extracts and the pure compounds was tested against three endophytic fungi (Colletotrichum sp., Phomopsis sp., and Guignardia manguifera) isolated from the same plant species (C. acuminata, Verbenaceae) and against four economically important phytopathogenic microorganisms (two fungoid oomycetes, Phythophtora capsici and Phythophtora parasitica, and the fungi Fusarium oxysporum and Alternaria solani). Spiroketals 1-3 displayed significant growth inhibition against all the phytopathogens. IC50 values for the four phytopathogens were from 20 to 170 microg/ml. Palmarumycin CP2 (4) was not bioactive against any of the fungi tested. Compound 1 showed the strongest bioactivity. The acetylated derivatives of preussomerin EG1 (1), 1a and 1b, were obtained and their biological activity was tested on endophytes and phytopathogens. Preussomerin EG1 1, 1a and 1b exhibited significant bioactivity against all microorganisms tested with the exception of Alternaria solani. Cysteine proteinases are involved in virtually every aspect of plant physiology and development. They play a role in development, senescence, programmed cell death, storage and mobilization of germinal proteins, and in response to various types of environmental stress. In this review, we focus on a group of plant defensive enzymes occurring in germinal tissue of Caricaceae. These enzymes elicit a protective response in the unripe fruit after physical stress. We propose that these enzymes follow a strategy similar to mammalian serine proteinases involved in blood clotting and wound healing. We show evidence for the pharmacological role of plant cysteine proteinases in mammalian wound healing, immunomodulation, digestive conditions, and neoplastic alterations. 相似文献

The Awajishima Monkey Center (AMC) free-ranging, provisioned population of Japanese macaques has included individuals with congenital limb malformations (CLMs) for at least 40 years. Including new data from this study, 16.1% of AMC infants from 1969 to 2007 (185 of 1,150) were born with CLMs. However, relatively little is known about the demographics of CLMs in the population, particularly the relationships among occurrence and severity of CLMs and age-sex demographics after infancy. In 2004, we conducted a census at AMC. Of the 199 monkeys censused, 34 individuals (17.1%) had CLMs. To estimate the severity of CLMs, we created an index that ranks individuals on a scale of 0 to 1 based on affected and absent limbs and digits. The severity of CLMs varied greatly (index range = 0.01-0.79, mean = 0.29), with similar variation in severity in each age-sex class (Student t-test, P > 0.05). 相似文献

A simplified amplified-fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) method was developed and applied to genotype 52 Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates. This method can be carried out using only one restriction enzyme (XhoI), one double strand adapter, and one PCR primer. The amounts of DNA and DNA polymerase, and the concentrations of primer and Mg2+ in the PCR step were optimized using the Basic Sequential Simplex method. AFLP analysis of the isolates generated a total of 24 differently sized bands ranging from 1537 to 121 bp, and 52 different band patterns, with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 13 bands. The results were compared with the well-established IS6110 restriction fragment length polymorphism (IS6110-RFLP) typing method, which rendered a total of 32 differently sized bands from 1 to 12 kbp, and 52 different band patterns, with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 15 bands. Therefore, both genotyping methods showed a discriminatory power of samples of 100%. Nevertheless, pairwise comparisons of the 1326 similarity indexes calculated for both typing methods showed a total absence of correlation between the similarity indexes of the two methods. The simplified AFLP method is expected to be more useful for genotyping M. tuberculosis isolates compared to the IS6110-RFLP method, since the former evaluates genetic variations throughout the M. tuberculosis genome. Furthermore, the relatively rapid and low-cost simplified AFLP method compares favorably to the IS6110-RFLP or conventional AFLP methods, and shows great promise for genotyping M. tuberculosis isolates, especially in developing countries or for preliminary screening. 相似文献
