Frequency of infection by Cryptosporidium sp. in 1,039 faecal smears stained by Ziehl-Neelsen, obtained from undernourished patients of a Nutritional Recovery Center and an ambulatory undernourished center from the Fifth Region, Chile, were studied. All underwent a coproparasitological examination by the modified Telemann method. Thirty eight (3.7%) patients infected by the parasite were detected, with an overall frequency of 8.5% among patients of the Nutritional Recovery Center and 1.9% among the ambulatory patients; this difference was statistically significant. The highest percentage of positive results were detected among the younger milk feeding infants. Also the percentage of difference among these and the older milk feeding infants (3.7%) was statistically significant. Association of Cryptosporidium sp. and Giardia lamblia was observed in 6 ambulatory patients (2.3%).  相似文献

In order to recognize the realizability of inputs with different physical natures through a component, Yoneda's Lemma is applied. The major utility of this Lemma is when the components produce only energy. From this, it is assumed that a new material input must exist which was not recognized in the original developments in biological systems representation. Moreover, simple transfers of energy, between objects, components, and among both objects and components are developed under the generic name; energetical evolution. Thus, energetical evolution appears as anew element in the abstract representation of biological systems. These new concepts are incorporated into a new abstract diagram and a newM β category. The pmr spectra of fully acetylated 2S: 3R-2 amino-trans-4 octadecene-1, 3 diol (sphingosine) (lb), 2S : 3R-2 aminooctadecane-1, 3 diol (dihydrosphingosine) (2b), 1-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-2S : 3R-2 tetracosanoylamido-trans-4 octadecene-1, 3 diol (cerasine) (3b), and 1-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-2S : 3R-2 (2′ hydroxy) tetracosanoylamido-trans-4 octadecene-1, 3 diol (phrenosine) (4b), were determined in chloroform-d, acetone-d6, and benzene-d6 at 220 MHz. Localized P1 mutagenesis was used to screen for conditionally lethal mutations in ribosomal protein genes. One such mutation, 2859mis, has been mapped inside the ribosomal protein gene cluster at 72 minutes on the Escherichia coli chromosome and cotransduces at 98% with rpsE (S5). The 2869mis mutation leads to thermosensitivity and impaired assembly in vivo of 50 S ribosomal particles at 42 °C. The strain carrying the mutation has an altered L24 ribosomal protein which at 42 °C shows weaker affinity for 23 S RNA than the wild-type protein. The mutational alteration involves a replacement of glycine by aspartic acid in protein L24 from the mutant. We conclude therefore that the 2859mis mutation affects the structural gene for protein L24 (rplX).  相似文献

—RNA from rat brain synaptosomes, mitochondria and microsomes was analysed by gel electrophoresis under conditions allowing good resolution in three different molecular weight ranges: 4s-16s, 16s-28s and >28s. Two synaptosome specific RNA bands were found, one with comparatively low molecular weight (8-9 × 104 Daltons) and another very large (sE > 60s). RNA species with electrophoretic characteristics similar to those reported for liver mitochondrial RNA were found in brain mitochondria. From the electrophoretic data their mean geometric radii were determined.  相似文献

Phosphor persistence, video bandwidth, DC restoration and high-voltage regulation affect the appearance of images presented on cathode-ray tubes (CRTs), potentially resulting in differences between nominal and actual stimuli. We illustrate these effects by measuring physical parameters of horizontal and vertical static and counter-phase flickering gratings, and we illustrate problems for vision research by measuring contrast sensitivity to these gratings. We also measured the extent to which calibration protocols actually result in the monitor being calibrated over its entire area regardless of image size. The results of our physical measurements indicate substantial differences between gratings that nominally differ only as to orientation. Consistent with these differences, our psychophysical measurements indicate different sensitivities when the bars of the gratings are parallel or orthogonal to raster lines, regardless of the retinal orientation of the gratings. The results of our calibration check show that only a small region around the target area of calibration can be regarded as effectively linearized, and only if the size of the test image used during the check is similar to the size of the calibration patch. Overall, our results indicate potentially severe problems with the use of CRTs in vision research, and we discuss some published results that are likely to have been affected by these problems.  相似文献

Apterous is a LIM-homeodomain protein that confers dorsal compartment identity in Drosophila wing development. Apterous activity requires formation of a complex with a co-factor, Chip/dLDB. Apterous activity is regulated during wing development by dLMO, which competes with Apterous for complex formation. Here, we present evidence that complex formation between Apterous, Chip and DNA stabilizes Apterous protein in vivo. We also report that a difference in the ability of Chip to bind the LIM domains of Apterous and dLMO contributes to regulation of activity levels in vivo.  相似文献

Aims Rhododendron ponticum L. is reputed to be a post Plio‐Pleistocene relict plant species with a disjunct distribution that comprises the Iberian Peninsula to the west and the Euxinian region plus some restricted Mediterranean areas to the east. We analysed the ecological range (of subsp. baeticum) in the western area (Aljibe Mountains, north of the Strait of Gibraltar) to understand the factors determining the present area limitation. Location Sierra del Aljibe, north of the Strait of Gibraltar (Iberian Peninsula). Methods We selected 20 riparian sites where R. ponticum is common, and compiled data on the ecological diversity of associated woody species and ferns. We established a 500‐m main transect in each site, along the stream or river course, in which we placed five 20‐m‐long plots at regular intervals. We recorded physiographic habitat features, woody plants and fern abundance, and the number of R. ponticum individuals. Results Rhododendron ponticum in southern Spain is restricted to riparian forests in acidic soils (pH 4.0–6.4), and is mainly found on the banks of inclined and enclosed streams. In our inventory we recorded 59 woody taxa and 12 ferns, with R. ponticum being the dominant species of the understorey (mean abundance 78.6%). The communities are characterized by a high incidence of the humid warm temperate element, both in number of species (18.8 ± 3.7 per site) and abundance; meanwhile, the presence of the modern Mediterranean element (mean number of species 3.4 ± 3.8 per site) appears to be favoured by disturbance. These ecological–historical groups of taxa also show distinct patterns of typological habit, frequency of endemism, infrageneric diversity and geographical range. Populations of R. ponticum are characterized by a very variable density of seedlings in many sites, and the virtual lack of juveniles. Main conclusions Riparian forests of the Aljibe Mountains constitute a refuge for R. ponticum where the species persists, but populations appear to be in decline. The narrow ecological range of R. ponticum in the area strongly contrasts with its wide amplitude in the eastern natural area, mainly the Euxinian region, where R. ponticum probably finds better conditions due to the environmental heterogeneity of the region, and the lack of a hot dry season.  相似文献
