The effects of testosterone (T) on male sexual behavior are well established, but its roles in several associated social behaviors such as pair‐bonding and paternal behavior are diverse. Recently, we reported that male T in response to pairing with a female predicts future paternal behavior in the monogamous and biparental California mouse (Peromyscus californicus). Here, we examined whether T in response to pairing is also associated with spacing behavior between mates under laboratory conditions and if these behavioral patterns are continued during pup care. Pairs of California mice were observed throughout their pair bond before and again after pups were born. We found that males with higher T post‐pairing remained closer to their mates in the weeks before pups were born, and pairs with higher proximity measures during the pair bond spent more time caring for pups together. Overall, these results suggest a similar mechanism for spacing behavior across distinct phases of the pair bond.  相似文献

Specialist insects share obligate mutualisms with some contemporary cycad species whereby the insect's pollination services are rewarded with a nursery in which the insect's larvae consume the postdispersal male cone. I prevented visits of the pollinator moth Anatrachyntis sp. to male Cycas micronesica (Cycadaceae) cones to show that consumption of the cone tissue by the mutualist hastened initiation of the plant's subsequent reproductive event. This is the first documented case where removal of a postdispersal cycad pollination organ speeds up subsequent reproductive events, and the current paradigm that the offering of cone tissue as a nursery is a sacrifice by the plant in return for the pollination services is therefore inaccurate. In C. micronesica, the herbivory stage of pollination mutualism confers a cryptic benefit of cone tissue disposal, which translates into an increase in ultimate lifetime reproductive effort. The plant population relies on the pollinator for moving gametes, as well as for increasing the number of male coning events. The dual benefits afforded to the plant by associating with this pollinator shows that mutualism can operate simultaneously on very different traits.  相似文献

Male birdsong is a sexually dimorphic behavior characterized by learned dialects. In a combined study of learning in relation to steroid levels in the plasma, changes in estradiol and testosterone levels were correlated with the timing of the sensitive period for song acquisition and with successive stages in song development. Male swamp sparrows were trained with a changing series of live singing tutors from 26 days to 1 year of age. Song acquisition was concentrated between 26 and 47 days of age (57%). By 85 days of age 71% of acquisition was completed; some occurred as late as 300 days. There were two major periods when testosterone levels were elevated. The first, from 30-80 days, encompassed most of the period of song acquisition. The second, from 260 to at least 360 days of age, coincided with song development. Estradiol levels were elevated from 18 to 170 days of age, encompassing almost all of the period of song acquisition. A marked estradiol peak between 40 and 50 days coincided with a trough in testosterone levels and a hiatus in song acquisition. The strong correlation between the second period of elevated testosterone and song motor development suggests a causal connection, with levels peaking in mid-development and declining during mature song production. Estradiol levels were elevated at the start of the study and remained so during early subsong production, from 30 to 165 days. They then fell to baseline, remaining there throughout the resumption of subsong and plastic song production at 250-326 days. Both estradiol and testosterone are candidates for possibly affecting song acquisition.  相似文献

Root development of ‘Red Lady’ papaya plants grown on a hillside   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Red Lady papaya (Carica papaya L.) seedlings were grown for 7 weeks in one experiment and 17 weeks in a second experiment on a 60% to 70% sloped hillside. Depth and lateral root developmental characteristics were determined to establish a more informed basis for developing management procedures during hillside production of papaya. A trench was dug perpendicular to the contour line, and positioned 10 cm from the stem base of each plant. A 1 cm layer of soil was removed from the profile wall, and the roots on the trench profile were mapped. Thereafter, the intact half of each root system was excavated to determine the dry mass and length distribution. Roots were separated into the taproot system, and the lateral roots of the uphill and downhill sides. The downhill portion of lateral roots accounted for 56% of total length and 64% of total mass after 7 weeks, and 71% of total length and 69% of total mass after 17 weeks. Some lateral roots on the uphill side of the plants developed with a negative gravitropic orientation to maintain a portion of the root system, close to the surface of the slope. After 17 weeks, 34% of the roots on the uphill side of the trench profile walls were located above a horizontal plane positioned at the stem base. Root growth of Red Lady papaya plants growing on hillsides was maintained in all directions, including up the slope. The results signify that there may be no need to modify fertilizer placement practices for hillside production of papaya. However, the higher concentration of roots on the downhill side of these plants indicates a need for placement of soil moisture sensors for irrigation scheduling in uphill and downhill sites.  相似文献

During song learning in birds, neurons are added to some song nuclei and lost from others. Previous studies have been unable to distinguish whether these neural changes are uniquely associated with memorizing a song model (sensory acquisition) or vocal practice (sensorimotor learning). In this study we measured changes in neuron number within song nuclei of swamp sparrows, a species in which the two phases of song learning are nonoverlapping. Male swamp sparrows were collected as hatchlings and tape-tutored from approximately 22 to 62 days of age. Swamp sparrows memorize about 60% of their song material during this period, but do not begin practicing this learned material until approximately 275 days of age. Birds were sacrificed at 23, 41, 61, 71, 274, or 340 days of age. During sensory acquisition, neuron number increased drastically in both the caudal nucleus of the ventral hyperstriatum (HVc) and Area X. The period of sensorimotor learning was not associated with any further changes in neuron number within these regions. We were unable to detect any significant changes in neuron number within the magnocellular nucleus of the neostriatum or the robust nucleus of the archistriatum during either stage of song learning. These results raise the possibility that ongoing addition of HVc and Area X neurons may encourage, and thereby temporally restrict, song acquisition.  相似文献

Are young songbirds ready to learn virtually any song, or are they predisposed to learn songs of their own species? To explore this question tests were conducted on the equipotentiality of auditory song learning stimuli in the song sparrow. 23 males reared as nestlings were exposed to tape recordings of their own and other species songs in early life and subsequent song production was analyzed for imitations. Birds exposed to natural song sparrow songs, including their fathers', and equal numbers of swamp sparrow songs, strongly preferred conspecific songs. They neither favored nor eschewed paternal songs despite having had access to them for 6–10 days as nestlings. In three other experiments synthetic songs were used in which some properties were held constant and others were systematically varied. Birds were exposed to 1–4 segmented songs varying in phrase order, tempo and syllable number, each synthesized in two versions, one from conspecific and the other from heterospecific (swamp sparrow) song syllables. With one-segmented songs (alien syntax) subjects favored conspecific over heterospecific syllable songs. Heterospecific syllables were rendered more acceptable by incorporation into two-segmented trilled songs (more song sparrow-like syntax). Heterogeneous summation of phonological and syntactical cues appeared to occur. There was also evidence of interaction between phonology and syntax. When another phrase type, the note complex, was added, in three- and four-segmented songs, a preference for conspecific syllables reappeared. Heterospecific syllables may be more readily accepted as a trilled sequence than without repetition, as in a note-complex. When phrase structure within four-segmented songs was varied, birds favored patterns most like normal conspecific song. We conclude that there are innate learning preferences in the song sparrow, based on note and syllabic structure (phonology and syllabic syntax), and temporal organization of phrases (segmental syntax), differing from those of the closely related swamp sparrow, Melospiza georgiana, in which song syntax plays no role in learning preferences.  相似文献

Lymphocyte differentiation from naive CD4(+) T cells into mature Th1, Th2, Th17, or T regulatory cell (Treg) phenotypes has been considered end stage in character. In this study, we demonstrate that dendritic cells (DCs) activated with a novel immune modulator B7-DC XAb (DC(XAb)) can reprogram Tregs into T effector cells. Down-regulation of FoxP3 expression after either in vitro or in vivo Treg-DC(XAb) interaction is Ag-specific, IL-6-dependent, and results in the functional reprogramming of the mature T cell phenotype. The reprogrammed Tregs cease to express IL-10 and TGFbeta, fail to suppress T cell responses, and gain the ability to produce IFN-gamma, IL-17, and TNF-alpha. The ability of IL-6(+) DC(XAb) and the inability of IL-6(-/-) DC(XAb) vaccines to protect animals from lethal melanoma suggest that exogenously modulated DC can reprogram host Tregs. In support of this hypothesis and as a test for Ag specificity, transfer of DC(XAb) into RIP-OVA mice causes a break in immune tolerance, inducing diabetes. Conversely, adoptive transfer of reprogrammed Tregs but not similarly treated CD25(-) T cells into naive RIP-OVA mice is also sufficient to cause autoimmune diabetes. Yet, treatment of normal mice with B7-DC XAb fails to elicit generalized autoimmunity. The finding that mature Tregs can be reprogrammed into competent effector cells provides new insights into the plasticity of T cell lineage, underscores the importance of DC-T cell interaction in balancing immunity with tolerance, points to Tregs as a reservoir of autoimmune effectors, and defines a new approach for breaking tolerance to self Ags as a strategy for cancer immunotherapy.  相似文献

Presenilin 1 (PS1) regulates environmental enrichment (EE)-mediated neural progenitor cell (NPC) proliferation and neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus. We now report that transgenic mice that ubiquitously express human PS1 variants linked to early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) neither exhibit EE-induced proliferation, nor neuronal lineage commitment of NPCs. Remarkably, the proliferation and differentiation of cultured NPCs from standard-housed mice expressing wild-type PS1 or PS1 variants are indistinguishable. On the other hand, wild-type NPCs cocultured with primary microglia from mice expressing PS1 variants exhibit impaired proliferation and neuronal lineage commitment, phenotypes that are recapitulated with mutant microglia conditioned media in which we detect altered levels of selected soluble signaling factors. These findings lead us to conclude that factors secreted from microglia play a central role in modulating hippocampal neurogenesis, and argue for non-cell-autonomous mechanisms that govern FAD-linked PS1-mediated impairments in adult hippocampal neurogenesis.  相似文献

Invasive exotic weeds pose one of the earth's most pressing environmental problems. Although many invaders completely eliminate native plant species from some communities, ecologists know little about the mechanisms by which these exotics competitively exclude other species. Mycorrhizal fungi radically alter competitive interactions between plants within natural communities, and a recent study has shown that arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi provide a substantial competitive advantage to spotted knapweed, Centaurea maculosa, a noxious perennial plant that has spread throughout much of the native prairie in the northwestern U.S. Here we present evidence that this advantage is potentially due to mycorrhizally mediated transfer of carbon from a native bunchgrass, Festuca idahoensis, to Centaurea. Centaurea maculosa, Festuca idahoensis (Idaho fescue, C3), and Bouteloua gracilis (blue gramma, C4) were grown in the greenhouse either alone or with Centaurea in an incomplete factorial design with and without AM fungi. Centaurea biomass was 87–168% greater in all treatments when mycorrhizae were present in the soil (P < 0.0001). However, Centaurea biomass was significantly higher in the treatment with both mycorrhizae and Festuca present together than in any other treatment combination (P < 0.0001). This high biomass was attained even though Centaurea photosynthetic rates were 14% lower when grown with Festuca and mycorrhizae together than when grown with Festuca without mycorrhizae. Neither biomass nor photosynthetic rates of Centaurea were affected by competition with the C4 grass Bouteloua either with or without mycorrhizae. The stable isotope signature of Centaurea leaves grown with Festuca and mycorrhizae was more similar to that of Festuca, than when Centaurea was grown alone with mycorrhizae (P = 0.06), or with Festuca but without mycorrhizae (P = 0.09). This suggests that carbon was transferred from Festuca to the invasive weed. We estimated that carbon transferred from Festuca by mycorrhizae contributed up to 15% of the aboveground carbon in Centaurea plants. Our results indicate that carbon parasitism via AM soil fungi may be an important mechanism by which invasive plants out compete their neighbors, but that this interaction is highly species-specific.  相似文献
