Development and reproduction of a predatory stinkbug, Podisus nigrispinus in relation to two different prey types and environmental conditions 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abiotic factors, prey availability, prey type, and plant host actsimultaneously under field conditions. Their combined effects werepartially investigated for the predatory stinkbugPodisus nigrispinus(Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) preying on tomato leafminer (TLM)caterpillars Tuta absoluta (Meyrick)(Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) (a preyfeeding on a plant host), and compared to yellow mealworm (YMW)Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)pupae (a prey not feeding ona plant host). These experiments were carried out in the laboratory and inan open-sided greenhouse. In general, the environmental variationsbetween laboratory and open-sided greenhouse did not induce differencesin life history characteristics forP. nigrispinus feeding on the sameprey type. However, development and reproductionof P. nigrispinuswas greatly affected by prey type. Nymphal developmental times weresimilar between prey types under laboratory conditions; but were longer(and produced adults of lower body weight) when predators in theopen-sided greenhouse were fed on TLM compared with YMW. Mean mortalityduring the second instar was higher on both prey types in the open-sidedgreenhouse than in the laboratory. Adult emergencewas 38.5 and 50% inthe laboratory, and 32.5 and 48.6%in the open-sided greenhouse for bugsfed on TLM and YMW, respectively. Reproductive characteristics weresimilar for the different environmental conditions when the predator fed onthe same prey, but offspring production was greater for females fed on YMWcompared to females fed on TLM. These results suggest thatP. nigrispinus can adjust its performance accordingto the type of prey available, independently from environmentalvariations. It has the ability to survive on alternative prey,enabling it to maintain a presence in thetomato ecosystem until a primary pest species arrives. 相似文献

Although the presence of feathers in the nest is widespread among birds, it has not been previously suggested that feathers can be used as sexual signals. Females of the spotless starling (Sturnus unicolor) regularly carry feathers to their nest, mostly during laying and incubation. We show that the arrangement of these feathers was non-random with respect to the side (obverse or reverse) placed upwards (which can be viewed from the nest entrance). Feathers of the wood pigeon (Columba palumbus) and the spotless starling, which exhibit higher ultraviolet and visible reflectance on their reverse side, were predominantly placed with this side upwards. On the contrary, feathers of the jay (Garrulus glandarius) were predominantly found exhibiting the obverse side, which possesses higher reflectance in this species. Feathers of the azure-winged magpie (Cyanopica cyana), with similar reflectance values on either side, were placed indiscriminately in obverse and reverse positions. The results suggest that feathers are arranged to maximize their conspicuousness within the nest and hence that they might be potentially used as intraspecific signals. 相似文献

Sponges from freshwater environments, unlike marine's, are poorly known producers of natural compounds with medicinal purposes. Amazonian sponges produce massive large specimens and are widely spread, taxonomically diverse and their metabolites could represent a new frontier on unusual natural products to treat diseases such as Alzheimer's and Malaria. Species of Metania and Drulia (Metaniidae) genera are major contributors to the fauna of Amazonian freshwater sponges. Methanolic extracts from several species from these genera had their inhibitory activities evaluated in vitro, for parasite Plasmodium falciparum and acetyl and butyrylcholinesterase enzymes (AChE and BChE). All extracts were able to inhibit AChE, although no activity was observed towards BChE. Drulia uruguayensis extract was the most potent, inhibiting AChE with IC50=1.04 mg/mL. For antiplasmodial activity, all species showed inhibition to P. falciparum, but Metania reticulata being the most efficient with IC50=2.7 μg/mL. The bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes uses the surface protein InlB to invade a variety of cell types. The interaction of InlB with the hepatocyte growth-factor receptor, Met, is crucial for infection to occur. Remarkably, the ubiquitin ligase Cbl is rapidly recruited to InlB-activated Met. Recent studies have shown that ligand-dependent endocytosis of Met and other receptor tyrosine kinases is triggered by monoubiquitination of the receptor, a process that is mediated by Cbl. Here, we show that purified InlB induces the Cbl-dependent monoubiquitination and endocytosis of Met. We then demonstrate that the bacterium exploits the ubiquitin-dependent endocytosis machinery to invade mammalian cells. First, we show that L. monocytogenes colocalizes with Met, EEA1, Cbl, clathrin and dynamin during entry. Then, we assess the role of different proteins of the endocytic machinery during L. monocytogenes infection. Over-expression or down-regulation of Cbl, respectively, increases or decreases bacterial invasion. Furthermore, RNA interference-mediated knock-down of major components of the endocytic machinery (for example, clathrin, dynamin, eps15, Grb2, CIN85, CD2AP, cortactin and Hrs), inhibit bacterial entry, establishing that the endocytic machinery is key to the bacterial internalization process. 相似文献

It was previously shown that sustained fever can be induced in rats by central injection of endothelin-1 (ET-1). This peptide appears to participate in the mechanism(s) of LPS-induced fever, which is reduced by pretreatments with ET(B) receptor antagonists. In this study, we compared the effects of a nonselective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor, indomethacin, with those of two selective COX-2 inhibitors, celecoxib and lumiracoxib, on ET-1-induced fever in rats. Fever induced in conscious animals by ET-1 (1 pmol icv) or LPS (5 mug/kg iv) was prevented by pretreatments with celecoxib (5 and 10 mg/kg) or lumiracoxib (5 mg/kg) given by oral gavage 1 h before stimuli. Lower doses of celecoxib had partial (2.5 mg/kg) or no effect (1 mg/kg). Indomethacin (2 mg/kg ip) partially inhibited fever induced by LPS but had no effect on ET-1-induced fever. The levels of PGE(2) and PGF(2alpha) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of pentobarbital sodium-anesthetized rats were significantly increased 3 h after the injection of LPS or ET-1. The latter increase was abolished by celecoxib at all tested doses and by indomethacin. In conclusion, selective COX-2 inhibitors were able to prevent ET-1-induced fever, indicating a role for COX-2 in this phenomenon. However, the fact that reduced CSF PG levels obtained with indomethacin and a low dose of celecoxib are not accompanied by changes in fever induced by ET-1, along with the lack of inhibitory effects of indomethacin on ET-1 fever, suggests that the latter might also involve COX-2-independent mechanisms. 相似文献

Listeria monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular Gram-positive bacterium responsible for listeriosis. It is able to invade, survive and replicate in phagocytic and non-phagocytic cells. The L. monocytogenes surface protein InlB interacts with c-Met, the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) receptor, inducing bacterial internalization in numerous non-phagocytic cells. As InlB and HGF are known to trigger similar signaling pathways upon c-Met activation, we investigated the role of CD44, and more specifically its isoform CD44v6, in bacterial internalization in non-phagocytic cells. Indeed, CD44, the hyaluronic acid transmembrane receptor, and more specifically its isoform CD44v6 have been reported as necessary for the activation of c-Met upon the interaction with either the endogenous ligand HGF or the L. monocytogenes surface protein InlB. Our results demonstrate that, in the cell lines that we used, CD44 receptors play no role in the activation of c-Met, neither during L. monocytogenes entry, nor upon HGF activation. Furthermore, none of the CD44 isoforms was recruited at the L. monocytogenes entry site, and depletion by siRNA of total CD44 or of CD44v6 isoform did not reduce bacterial infections. Conversely, the overexpression of CD44 or CD44v6 had no significant effect on L. monocytogenes internalization. Floral sexual phases can differ in nectar production and might be under selective pressure by pollinators. We studied Euphorbia tithymaloides, which has inflorescences that are initially female and then hermaphroditic. Volume and concentration of nectar were measured in both stages. Nectar production and the effect of extractions were determined using sets of bagged inflorescences; inflorescences in the hermaphroditic phase had higher values of nectar concentration, volume and sugar mass than inflorescences in the female phase. Nectar resorption was detected in senescent inflorescences. To test for homeostatic nectar regulation, artificial nectar was added and the response assessed after 24 h. The experiments showed that concentration and sugar mass are regulated within a narrow range, and the homeostatic points differ between the two sexual phases. These differences in nectar can be detected by hummingbirds, which prefer the female stage. Resorption and secretion seem to be part of a homeostatic mechanism by which nectar attributes are maintained to optimise sugar recovery. 相似文献

Hepatic glycogen is formed by direct and indirect pathways whose activities reflect altered nutrition or disease. Direct/indirect pathway measurements often involve test meals where ~10% of carbohydrate is galactose, but its effects on direct/indirect pathway estimates are unknown. Therefore, direct/indirect pathway contributions in 24-h fasted rats given 2 g/kg 100% glucose (GLU, n=6) or 90% glucose–10% galactose (GLU+GAL, n=6) were measured by [U-13C]glucose dilution and by position-5/position-2 glycogen enrichment (H5/H2) from 2H2O. For GLU+GAL, galactose glycogenesis was independently measured with [1-13C]galactose. Glycogenesis was equivalent in both groups but for GLU+GAL, 23±4% of glycogen was derived from galactose. [U-13C]glucose reported a 30±3% direct pathway contribution to glycogenesis for GLU but only 20±3% for GLU+GAL (p=0.012 vs. GLU). H5/H2 yielded identical direct pathway estimates (32±3% GLU, 29±6% GLU+GAL). Thus, galactose glycogenesis was undetected by H5/H2 while [U-13C]glucose reported a reduced direct/indirect pathway ratio. With [1-13C]galactose also present, correct glycogenic source contributions were obtained. 相似文献
