Body size and migration rate in moths   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Migration rate is often thought to be affected by species distribution, abundance, body size, and niche width, but empirical results are controversial and fragmentary. In this study we examined these relationships in a large assemblage of noctuid moths. Migration rate was measured using two approaches, directly with a mark-recapture study in a network of small islands, and indirectly on the basis of the occurrence of moths outside their breeding habitat. The effects of the factors assumed to affect migration rate were adjusted for taxonomy using a simple yet novel approach based on logistic regression. Both with and without adjusting for taxonomy, the results indicate that abundance and body size influence migration rate, that the effects of abundance and body size have a negative interaction, and that the effects of ecological specialization on migration rate are evident (monophagous species migrate less than oligophagous or polyphagous species). The incidence of island or habitat patch occupancy was not affected by body size, most likely because body size has several contrasting consequences on the processes that determine island occupancy. Migration rate appears to be an evolutionarily labile character, which can readily transform in different phylogenetical lineages of moths.  相似文献

The first data on the feeding ecology of the endemic Telestes karsticus are presented for specimens sampled monthly (July 2007–July 2008) from the Su?ik Creek in the Lug Polje field, Croatia. Macrozoobenthos density was calculated and compared with the stomach contents of T. karsticus and the seasonal profile of the diet was examined. The ratio of gut length vs. standard length was 0.9 ± 0.12. Gut contents revealed that benthic invertebrates accounted for the majority of food consumed, although terrestrial arthropods, plant material, algae and fish were also found. Since this is the only fish species in the investigated creek, T. karsticus can be concluded to be cannibalistic. The proportion of empty guts found in all seasons was small, indicating year round feeding. The number and diversity of prey species was highest in spring and lowest in summer. Ivlev's electivity index was very high for Cladocera, Coleoptera, Trichoptera, Heteroptera and Hymenoptera in all seasons, suggesting positive selection for these prey groups, as opposed to Oligochaeta, Isopoda and Bivalva, which showed negative values in all seasons. For Actinopterygii, the Ivlev coefficient of selection was highly negative in spring, and highly positive in summer. Plant matter was detected in stomach contents in all seasons, with the highest share found in summer when other prey species were less available. The karstic dace is a generalised feeder, consuming the most available prey, and therefore can be classified as a euryphagous omnivore.  相似文献

In many marine surface sediments, the reduction of manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) oxides is obscured by sulfate reduction, which is regarded as the predominant anaerobic microbial respiration process. However, many dissimilatory sulfate and sulfur reducing microorganisms are known to utilize alternative electron acceptors such as metal oxides. In this study, we tested whether sulfate and sulfur reducing bacteria are linked to metal oxide reduction based on biogeochemical modeling of porewater concentration profiles of Mn2+ and Fe2+ in Bothnian Bay (BB) and Skagerrak (SK) sediments. Steady-state modeling of Fe2+ and Mn2+ porewater profiles revealed zones of net Fe (0–9 cm BB; ~10 and 20 cm SK) and Mn (0–5 cm BB; 2–8 cm SK) species transformations. 16S rRNA pyrosequencing analysis of the in-situ community showed that Desulfobacteraceae, Desulfuromonadaceae and Desulfobulbaceae were present in the zone of Fe-reduction of both sediments. Rhodobacteraceae were also detected at high relative abundance in both sediments. BB sediments appeared to harbor a greater diversity of potential Fe-reducers compared to SK. Additionally, when the upper 10 cm of sediment from the SK was incubated with lepidocrocite and acetate, Desulfuromonas was the dominant bacteria. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) results showed decreasing dsrA gene copy numbers with depth coincided with decreased Fe-reduction activity. Our results support the idea that sulfur and sulfate reducing bacteria contribute to Fe-reduction in the upper centimeters of both sediments.  相似文献

The sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) is a widely spread and important multipurpose tree species in the Mediterranean area, which has played an important role in human history. Natural events, such as glaciations, and human influence played significant roles in the distribution and genetic makeup of the sweet chestnut. In order to better understand how natural and human-mediated past events affected the current genetic diversity and structure of the sweet chestnut, we analysed populations from Central Europe and the western part of the Balkan Peninsula, utilizing ten polymorphic nuclear microsatellite markers. The study revealed the existence of three genetically and, to a large extent, geographically distinct and well-defined groups of sweet chestnut populations. Two not entirely separated groups of populations were detected in the northern part of the studied area and one in the southern. Our results indicate that the genetic structure of sweet chestnut populations in Central Europe and the western part of the Balkan Peninsula is the result of both natural colonization events and significant and lengthy human impact. Furthermore, it has been proven that the gene flow between cultivated/grafted trees’ and wild chestnut stands can influence their genetic structure. However, our results reveal that cultivated-to-wild introgression in the sweet chestnut is dependent on the close proximity of chestnut orchards and naturally occurring populations.  相似文献

The vast number of undescribed species and the fast rate of biodiversity loss call for new approaches to speed up alpha taxonomy. A plethora of methods for delimiting species or operational taxonomic units (OTUs) based on sequence data have been published in recent years. We test the ability of four delimitation methods (BIN, ABGD, GMYC, PTP) to reproduce established species boundaries on a carefully curated DNA barcode data set of 1870 North European beetle species. We also explore how sampling effort, intraspecific variation, nearest neighbour divergence and nonmonophyly affect the OTU delimitations. All methods produced approximately 90% identity between species and OTUs. The effects of variation and sampling differed between methods. ABGD was sensitive to singleton sequences, while GMYC showed tendencies for oversplitting. The best fit between species and OTUs was achieved using simple rules to find consensus between discordant OTU delimitations. Using several approaches simultaneously allows the methods to compensate for each other's weaknesses. Barcode‐based OTU‐picking is an efficient way to delimit putative species from large data sets where the use of more sophisticated methods based on multilocus or genomic data is not feasible.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Recent studies have demonstrated the existence of positive density dependence in the survival and development of Drosophila (the so‐called Allee effect); however the underlying mechanisms of such Allee effects have remained elusive. Competition with filamentous fungi have often been suggested to be involved in causing high mortality at low larval density, but it has not yet been explicitly tested if the well known spatial aggregation of insect eggs yields a fitness benefit for the developing larvae in the presence of noxious moulds. 2. Using Drosophila melanogaster, the present study tested whether larval survival is greater in aggregations when confronted with various combinations of three representative mould species (Aspergillus, Alternaria, and Penicillium) and a head start for fungal development. 3. High rates of fungal‐dependent mortality and significant positive density‐dependent larval survival (i.e. Allee effects) were observed when larvae were confronted with food resources containing established colonies of Aspergillus or Alternaria. Neither the simultaneous transfer of Aspergillus or Alternaria spores with larvae to food patches nor food infections with Penicillium affected insect larval development. 4. Significant correlations between mould growth and larval survival could be identified, although the patterns that emerged were shown to be inconsistent when the effects were compared between fungal species and fungal priority. Because mould growth only partly explained larval survival, the influence of other fungal‐borne factors, e.g. mycotoxins, needs to be elucidated in order to understand the mechanistic basis of insect–mould interactions. 5. These results are the first to argue convincingly for moulds being involved in mediating Allee effects for insects on ephemeral resources; however they also demonstrate an unexpected diversity in insect–mould interactions. Considering this diversity may be important in understanding insect spatial ecology.  相似文献

Nonlinear oscillatory systems, playing a major role in biology, do not exhibit harmonic oscillations. Therefore, one might assume that the average value of any of their oscillating variables is unequal to the steady-state value. For a number of mathematical models of calcium oscillations (e.g. the Somogyi–Stucki model and several models developed by Goldbeter and co-workers), the average value of the cytosolic calcium concentration (not, however, of the concentration in the intracellular store) does equal its value at the corresponding unstable steady state at the same parameter values. The average value for parameter values in the unstable region is even equal to the level at the stable steady state for other parameter values, which allow stability. This holds for all parameters except those involved in the net flux across the cell membrane. We compare these properties with a similar property of the Higgins–Selkov model of glycolytic oscillations and two-dimensional Lotka–Volterra equations. Here, we show that this equality property is critically dependent on the following conditions: There must exist a net flux across the model boundaries that is linearly dependent on the concentration variable for which the equality property holds plus an additive constant, while being independent of all others. A number of models satisfy these conditions or can be transformed such that they do so. We discuss our results in view of the question which advantages oscillations may have in biology. For example, the implications of the findings for the decoding of calcium oscillations are outlined. Moreover, we elucidate interrelations with metabolic control analysis. This paper is dedicated to the memory of the late Reinhart Heinrich, who was the academic teacher of S.S. and, to a great extent, also of M.M.  相似文献
