Concanavalin A (Con A) administered at the time of immunization induces suppression of the in vivo splenic plaque-forming cell (PFC) response to type III pneumococcal polysaccharide (SSS-III). As with low dose paralysis of the PFC response to SSS-III, Con A-induced suppression could not be demonstrated in congenitally athymic (nu/nu) mice and could be eliminated partially by treatment with anti-lymphocyte serum (ALS). The kinetics for Con A-induced suppression paralleled those for low dose paralysis of the antibody response to SSS-III. These findings support the view that Con A-induced suppression is produced in vivo by suppressor T cells and that this form of suppression shares with low dose paralysis a common pathway through which suppression is mediated. 相似文献

Previous studies on the basis for the immunosuppressive potential of adrenal corticosteroids have stressed that the effects of these agents on immune functions depend on the animal species being considered, as well as the subpopulations of lymphocytes involved in the expression of immune functions examined. In the present work, we have evaluated the effect of a single dose of hydrocortisone on three different immunoregulatory functions that can influence the magnitude of an antibody response to Type III pneumococcal polysaccharide (SSS-III) in mice; these functions include suppressor, amplifier, and helper activity that are dependent upon the presence of distinct subpopulations of thymus-derived (T) cells. The results obtained show that a single injection of a relatively large dose of hydrocortisone, when given at the time of priming with carrier, eliminated all evidence of carrier-specific helper T cell activity; hydrocortisone was also found to eliminate a significant amount of helper T cell activity when given after such activity had been generated. But, under the same experimental conditions, suppressor and amplifier T cell activities were unaffected, even in this steroid-sensitive species. Such selective sensitivity may account for some of the immunosuppressive potency of steroids. 相似文献

Laminaria saccharina Lamour. sporophytes were grown in enriched and synthetic media through a range of nitrate concentrations, There was an approximately linear relationship between growth and nutrient concentration up to 10 μ substrate concentration. The half-saturation constant (K2) was ca. 1.4 μ NO3-. The internal levels of NO3- increased at substrate concentrations above 10 μM b>3- and reached levels several thousand times higher than the surrounding medium. Thus there is evidence for luxury consumption of NOsb>3-. The chlorophyll content and photosynthetic capacities of plants also increased with increasing external NO3- The ecological implications of this work are considered. 相似文献

Cell lines competent to infection by DNA from cultures chronically infected by type C viruses of the simian sarcoma virus and baboon endogenous virus groups were identified. Significant differences were observed in the relative susceptibility of some cell lines to infection by a given proviral DNA. Documentation of amentoflavone O-glucosides as the predominant flavonoid glycosides in both genera of the Psilotaceae clearly distinguishes this family from all other families of vascular plants. Psilotum and Tmesipteris also possess apigenin C- and O-glycosides as common flavonoid types. Apigenin 7-O-rhamnoglucoside occurs in both genera and the previously undocumented apigenin 7-O-rhamnoglucoside-4′-O-glucoside, although identified only in Tmesipteris, may also be present in Psilotum. The existence of flavone C-glycosides in both genera may provide a phytochemical relationship between the Psilotaceae and some ferns. The phylogenetic significance of these results is discussed. 相似文献

A survey for 1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxy-C-glycosylxanthones of representative species within the primitive vascular plants, emphasizing the leptosporangiate ferns, has indicated a limited distribution of these compounds within three leptosporangiate families: Hymenophyllaceae, Aspleniaceae and Marsileaceae. In the Hymenophyllaceae the distribution of these compounds appears to be a useful criterion for segregating species of Mecodium from other species of Hymenophyllum (sensu lato) and suggests that the tubulate vs. the valvate indusial condition may not be an ideal character for separating all species of Hymenophyllum (s.l.) from those of Trichomanes (s.l.). These compounds appear useful for delimiting several species of Elaphoglossum section Pachyglossa and support a relationship among the Aspleniaceae, Athyriaceae, and Elaphoglossaceae. Their presence in Marsilea also raises questions as to the origin of this group of plants. 相似文献

The antitumor agent cis-platinum(II)diamminodichloride (PDD) caused wild-type and recA+ deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) repair-deficient mutant cells of Escherichia coli K-12 to grow as long, multinucleated filaments. At 5 micrograms/ml, the times required for reduction of viability to 37% for wild-type, polA, recB,C, uvrA, and recA organisms were > 200, 200, 120, 25, and 5 min, respectively. Only recA cells exhibited @reckless" degradation of DNA at this concentration of PDD. As shown by sedimentation in alkaline sucrose gradients, generation of single-strand breaks in DNA of the remaining organisms was a major consequence of growth in PDD. Upon incubation in fresh medium after removal of the compound and storage for 4 h at 4 degrees C, a respective lag of 3, 4, 6, and 9 h occurred before filaments of wild-type, polA, recB,C, and uvrA cells commenced cell division. Maintenance at 4 degrees C, which evidently delayed postshift initiation of chromosome replication, was only essential for fragmentation of uvrA filaments. In all cases, these periods of division delay corresponded to those required for restoration of normal chromosomal molecular weight as determined in alkaline sucrose gradients. 相似文献

Specific synthesis of some oligoadenylates including A2'p5'A2'p5'Ap(2'), the 2'-phosphorylated oligoribonucleotide core of the recently discovered protein synthesis inhibitor pppA2'p5'A2'p5'A is described using a novel solid-phase method. The CD spectra of A2'p5'Ap(2'), A2'p5'A2'p5'Ap(2') and A2'p5'A2'p5'A (derived by treatment of the phosphorylated synthetic trimer with E. coli alkaline phosphatase) are presented. Comparison of the latter spectrum with that of A2'p5'A2'p5'A obtained similarly from a biologically derived sample of pppA2'p5'A2'p5'A provides further evidence that this molecule is in fact the first naturally-occurring 2'-5'-linked oligoribonucleotide. 相似文献
