Thermowaves spreading through the cerebral cortex were observed and investigated during acute experiments on white rats using a new technique — that of thermoencephaloscopy (TES) through the intact skull. These waves were induced by regular visual stimulation (at intervals of 1.5–3 min) or by initiating one of the flashes and spread through the cortex along trajectories of five basic types; amplitude of thermowaves: 0.005–0.1°C; length: 10–15 mm; duration 1.2–11.4 sec; velocity: 1–33 mm/sec; extent of pathway: 2–56 mm. They appeared with a high degree of probability (of 0.92) during the interval between 15 sec before and 26 sec after the flash. Numbers of moving waves declined by the point of stimulus application and rose by 7–8 sec after the flash. Waves arose in 50% of cases in the contralateral visual cortex (areas 17 and 18a), spreading to the midline and crossing to the ipsilateral hemisphere (areas 17, 18a, and 7). Local waves moving along a circular trajectory were also discovered in the contralateral visual cortex. Several types of wave, differing in trajectory, also arose in the ipsilateral visual cortex. 1. Using a renal cortical slice preparation from the summer-active ground squirrel, Spermophilus lateralis, resting renin release (RR) and tissue cyclic AMP content (TcAMPC) levels were found to be significantly higher and lower, respectively, than those previously reported for its hibernating counterpart. 2. At a 10(-5) M dose, PGE2 but not PGE1, PGF2-alpha or PGA1, significantly stimulated RR in the summer-active ground squirrel (SAGS). 3. Addition of agents which normally increase TcAMPC significantly potentiated the effect of PGE1, while preventing that of PGE2, on RR and TcAMPC. 4. Opposite TcAMPC changes may mediate the in vitro RR responses to PGE1 and PGE2 administration in the SAGS.  相似文献

Summary Two expressions are given for the survival dose of DNA exposed to high-energy radiation in aqueous solution in the presence of a scavenger. They are derived from a model where a diffusion controlled reaction of OH radicals occurs on the surface of the DNA macromolecules in competition with scavenging in the bulk of the solution. The DNA molecules are approximated either by spheres or by cylinders. The model based on molecules of spherical shape corresponds closely to that developed by van Rijn et al. [20]. Expressions obtained from the cylindrical model are used to account for the dependence on the scavenger concentration of some experimentally measured quantities, namely the survival dose and theG value for single-strand breaks upon Co -irradiation ofX 174 DNA and polyadenylic acid, respectively.In memoriam Prof. Dr. O.E. Low-energy peptide backbone structures of dermorphin (DM), amide of its N-terminal pentapeptide (DM 1-5) and DM 1-5 analogues with substitutions of Gly4 for Leu, D-Gln, Aal or Tal were determined by energy calculations. The above analogues were shown to possess different affinities toward opiate receptors of mu-type. The comparison of low-energy backbone structures of DM, DM 1-5 and its analogues resulted in development of the dermorphin "biologically active" conformation being characteristic of its binding with mu-type receptors. The specific binding of dermorphin to this receptor apparently depends on the conformation of the whole N-terminal pentapeptide.  相似文献

Modification of 5'-32P-labelled octadecadeoxyribonucleotide d(pC5A8C5) (III) with octathymidylate methylphosphonate derivatives bearing both 3'- and 5'-terminal alkylating 4-(N-2-chloroethyl-N-methylamino)benzylphosphoamide residue has been investigated. Yield in the modification depends on configuration of methylphosphonate fragment, in case of Rp-isomer it may amount to 90%. Specificity of alkylation of nucleic acide target (III) by reagents based on the oligonucleotide methylphosphonates is almost the same as by reagents based on the oligonucleotides having phosphodiester internucleotide bonds.  相似文献

The availability of light, CO2 and NH4-N interacted to controlbuoyancy and growth of the gas vacuolate blue-green alga, Anabaenaflos-aquae. At high light intensities algal growth rates werehigh; however, the alga was non-buoyant regardless of the availabilityof CO2 or NH4-N. The mechanism for buoyancy loss involved increasedcell turgor pressures at higher light intensities which resultedin collapse of gas vacuoles. At lower light intensities algalgrowth rates and cell turgor pressures were reduced and buoyancywas controlled by the availability of CO2 and inorganic nitrogen.Carbon dioxide limitation increased buoyancy, while reducedinorganic nitrogen availability reduced buoyancy. Mechanismsfor buoyancy regulation at low light intensities involved changesin cellular C/N ratios which appeared to affect the rate ofsynthesis and accumulation of protein-rich gas vacuoles. Algalspecific growth rates were combined with buoyancy data to forma single index (µbloom) to the rate of surface bloom formationof A.flos-aquae as a function of the availability of light,CO2 and NH4-N. The bloom formation index was enhanced with decreasedavailability of light and CO2, and increased availability ofNH4-N.  相似文献

Larvae and adults ofCamallanus anabantis andC. kulasirii, recovered from the West Bengali freshwater fishes,Anabas testudineus andOphicephalus punctatus, respectively, are described on the basis of detailed morphological studies under the light microscope. Larval forms collected fromA. testudineus are deemed to be of the third and fourth stages when compared with those from experimental studies of the life cycle ofC. anabantis. Moreover, the present fourth stage female larvae are similar to the females ofC. pearsei, both morphologically and metrically.C. pearsei is, therefore, believed to represent the fourth stage female larvae ofC. anabantis. Similarly, adult males and females recovered fromO. punctatus closely resembleC. kulasirii andC. fernandoi, respectively. The larval forms from this host are fourth stage and can be distinguished as males and females, but both possess a buccal capsule bearing beaded longitudinal ridges similar to that of adult males. The late fourth stage (just prior to the final moult) female larva is, however, found to possess a buccal capsule transitional between that of the adult male and female and also betweenC. kulasirii andC. fernandoi. C. fernandoi is, therefore, presumed to represent the females ofC. kulasirii. However,C. pearsei andC. fernandoi are regarded, for the present, asspecies inquirendae.  相似文献

Helodermin, VIP and PHI, which share a high degree of homology with secretin, have been identified in the gut but their physiological role is unknown. In this study 3 series of tests were carried out to determine the actions of helodermin, VIP and PHI on pancreatic secretion in 6 conscious dogs and amylase release from the dispersed canine pancreatic acini and to correlate the alterations in pancreatic secretory and circulatory effects in 24 anesthetized dogs. Helodermin, VIP and PHI infused i.v. in graded doses (12.5-200 pmol/kg.h) resulted in a dose-dependent increase in pancreatic HCO3 secretion reaching, respectively, 100%, 7% and 2% of secretin maximum. When combined with constant dose infusion of CCK-8 (100 pmol/kg.h), helodermin but not VIP or PHI augmented dose-dependently the HCO3 secretion. When added in various concentrations (10(-10)-10(-5)M) to the incubation medium of dispersed pancreatic acini only helodermin but not VIP or PHI increased dose-dependently amylase release reaching about 50% of CCK-8 maximum. In anesthetized dogs, the pancreatic blood flow (PBF) measured by electromagnetic blood flowmetry showed an immediate and dose-dependent increase following the injections of various doses of helodermin, VIP, PHI and secretin, the peak blood flow preceding by about 1 min the peak secretory stimulation. This study shows that helodermin resembles secretin in its potent pancreatic HCO3 stimulation but differs from VIP or PHI which are poor secretagogues but potent vasodilators. We conclude that if tested peptides are released in the gut, helodermin, like secretin, may be involved in the hormonal stimulation of exocrine pancreas, whereas VIP and PHI may serve mainly as vasodilators in the pancreatic circulation.  相似文献
