Sexually mature bison (Bison bison) cows were tested for both pregnancy and ovulation by means of urinary steroid metabolites and fecal steroids. The accuracy of pregnancy diagnosis was determined among 18 bison cows, in approximately the third month of gestation, by means of urinary pregnanediol-3 delta-glucuronide (PdG), urinary estrone conjugates (E1C), and fecal total estrogens (TE). Urinary PdG was 100% accurate, urinary E1C was 89% accurate, and fecal TE was 100% accurate in predicting pregnancy. Fecal progesterone (P4) and TE, as well as urinary E1C and PdG concentrations all increased from conception (August) through January, but significant differences were not apparent until November. During the rutting season ovulation was detected by increases in either urinary PdG or fecal P4 concentrations. Both pregnancy and ovulation were detected in uncaptured bison with reasonable accuracy by means of urinary and fecal steroids or their metabolites. 相似文献

Several mutants of Pseudomonas syringae subsp. savastanoi were tested for their ability to sense and respond to a chemotactic gradient in low concentrations of yeast extract. The mutants were deficient in one or both of the genes coding for the synthesis of the plant hormones indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and isopentenyl adenosine. Mutations which resulted in the loss of IAA production were due to the loss of the entire plasmid containing the iaa operon or to an 18-kb deletion of the iaa region. Additional mutants tested were deficient in their ability to produce isopentenyl adenosine as a result of the loss of the ptz-bearing plasmid. In all cases, strains which had lost the ability to produce IAA exhibited enhanced motility of up to 2.5 times that of the wild type (IAA+) in medium containing 0.01% yeast extract. No differences in motility were observed on medium containing lower concentrations of yeast extract. The presence or absence of the cytokinin plasmid and the presence or absence of inorganic nitrogen in the medium had no effect on the relative mobility of the strains. 相似文献

Treacher Collins syndrome is an autosomal dominant condition of bilateral craniofacial abnormalities of structures derived from the first and second branchial arches. A patient with severe manifestations of Treacher Collins syndrome and a de novo chromosomal deletion in region 4p15.32----p14 was identified. Anonymous DNA sequences of loci D4S18, D4S19, D4S20, D4S22, and D4S23 were mapped to the deleted region. DNA probes previously mapped to loci on chromosome 4p (D4S10, D4S15, D4S16, D4S26, D4S35, D4S95, D4S144, RAF1P1, QDPR, and HOX7) were not deleted in this patient. Linkage analysis between the D4S18, D4S23, and QDPR loci and Treacher Collins syndrome in eight families excluded the Treacher Collins syndrome locus from the region of the deletion. 相似文献

Data are presented from a prospective clinical replication series of ten consecutive high-medication headache patients who presented for nondrug treatment of their headaches. For the first eight, an attempt was made to withdraw the patients from medication, with the assistance of relaxation training, prior to entering a comprehensive self-regulatory treatment program. For the last two, drug withdrawal accompanied the treatment. Six of the ten patients showed clinically significant reductions in headache activity, which held up over follow-ups of up to 12 months. Dwarf ginseng (Panax trifolium L., Araliaceae) is a diphasic (“sex changing”) species in which one phase has staminate flowers and the other has hermaphroditic flowers. In order to determine the relative allocations of the hermaphroditic gender phase to male and female functions,variation in population gender phase ratios, pollen production and viability, and ovule and seed production were documented. Gender phase ratios are highly male-biased. Dwarf ginseng is self-compatible, and both gender phases have viable pollen capable of effecting fertilization. Males produce more flowers and more viable pollen per anther than hermaphrodites. The phenotypic gender of hermaphrodites is extremely female-biased; it is likely that hermaphrodites function essentially as females. Sexual selection may have a role in the evolution and maintenance of differences between the gender phases in allocation to male function. 相似文献

A model for studying transfer of delayed-type sensitivity to mice with cellfree materials is described. The results with a particulate antigen (Candida) and 4 soluble protein antigens (PPD, ferritin, cytochrome c, and horseradish peroxidase) suggest that the phenomenon is antigen specific. Incubation of [14C]-ring labeled hexamethylmelamine and pentamethylmelamine with rat and mouse liver microsomal preparations results in metabolic activation of both drugs as measured by covalent binding of radiolabel to acid-precipitable microsomal macromolecules. Covalent binding is dependent on viable microsomes, NADPH, and molecular oxygen. Binding of HMM (280 pmol/mg protein/15 min) was approximately 5 times greater than that observed for PMM (60 pmol/mg protein/15 min), and represents 0.22% of incubated material. Similar results were found with [14C]-methyl labeled substrates. Investigation of the North American species Psilostrophe villosa afforded, in addition to known compounds, five new sesquiterpene lactones, which all turn out to be modified pseudoguaianolides, most of them closely related to hymenolide. However, one of the lactones is a new type of nor-pseudoguaianolide. Furthermore a new monoacetylated borneol-β-D-glucoside is present. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly. 相似文献
