We are characterizing a suiteof Pisum sativum mutants that alter inflorescence architecture to construct a model for the genetic regulation of inflorescence development
in a plant with a compound raceme. Such a model, when compared with those created forAntirrhinum majus andArabidopsis thaliana, both of which have simple racemes, should provide insight into the evolution of the development of inflorescence architecture.
The highly conserved nature of cloned genes that regulate reproductive development in plants and the morphological similarities

In order to evaluate the influence of the number of catches in pheromone-baited traps on the percentage of larval infestation, six delta traps equipped with sex attractant were placed in each of three regions in Central Greece (Farkadona, Farsala, Almyros) in cotton fields from 20 June until 30 September 1995. The collection of fruiting bodies took place weekly and the counting of adults in the traps was carried out each day. The population fluctuation in all three regions was similar with their peak during the first weeks of August. In Farkadona the infestation level was low (1% at the first sampling of August) with a maximum of 9% in the last sampling of September. In Farsala and Almyros, the infestation level was already high (10% and above) in early August. There was a significant positive linear correlation between the number of moth catches and the infestation percentage from first- and second-stage larvae on the first (R = 0694) and second (R = 0.7399) boll-feeding generations. 相似文献

Abstract: Many articulated brachiopods experience marked life habit variations during ontogeny because they experience their fluid environment at successively higher Reynolds numbers, and they can change the configuration of their inhalant and exhalant flows as body size increases. We show that the extant brachiopod Terebratalia transversa undergoes a substantial ontogenetic change in reorientation governed by rotation around the pedicle. T. transversa′s reorientation angle (maximum ability to rotate on the pedicle) decreases during ontogeny, from 180 degrees in juveniles to 10–20 degrees in individuals exceeding 5 mm, to complete cessation of rotation in individuals larger than 10 mm. Rotation ability is substantially reduced after T. transversa achieves the adult lophophore configuration and preferred orientation with respect to ambient water currents at a length of 2.5–5 mm. We hypothesize that the rotation angle of T. transversa is determined mainly by the position of ventral and dorsal points of attachment of dorsal pedicle muscles relative to the pedicle. T. transversa shows a close correlation between the ontogenetic change in reorientation angle and ontogeny of morphological traits that are related to points of attachment of dorsal pedicle muscles, although other morphological features can also limit rotation in the adult stage. The major morphological change in cardinalia shape and the observed reduction of rotation affect individuals 2.5–10 mm in length. The position of ventral insertions of dorsal pedicle muscles remains constant, but contraction of dorsal pedicle muscles is functionally handicapped because dorsal insertions shift away from the valve midline, rise above the dorsal valve floor, and become limited by a wide cardinal process early in ontogeny (<5 mm). The rate of increase of cardinal process width and of distance between dorsal pedicle muscle scars substantially decreases in the subadult stage (5–10 mm), and most of the cardinalia shell traits grow nearly isometrically in the adult stage (>10 mm). T. transversa attains smaller shell length in crevices than on exposed substrates. The proportion of small‐sized individuals and population density is lower on exposed substrates than in crevices, indicating higher juvenile mortality on substrates prone to grazing and physical disturbance. The loss of reorientation ability can be a consequence of morphological changes that strengthen substrate attachment and maximize protection against biotic or physical disturbance (1) by minimizing torques around the pedicle axis and/or (2) by shifting energy investments into attachment strength at the expense of the cost involved in reorientation. 相似文献

Extracts from marine sources exhibit antimicrobial and antioxidant properties in vitro and there has been great interest within the food industry to move towards natural methods of food preservation. Natural extracts from seaweeds could potentially have a multiple functionality within the food industry to increase safety and enhance the quality of food products. The present study is aimed to assess the antimicrobial activity of a hydrophilic extract from the fucoid brown alga Himanthalia elongata in model food systems. Carbohydrate and protein model food systems (CMFS and PMFS, respectively) were studied at varying concentrations (1 %, 5 % and 10 %) and bacterial inhibition of the extract was investigated against Salmonella abony and Listeria monocytogenes. The extract provided up to 100 % inhibition of the bacteria with a bactericidal effect in CMFS, while a bacteriostatic effect was seen in PMFS. In general, there was a significant difference (P?<?0.05) between the efficacies of the extract against S. abony as compared to L. monocytogenes with higher inhibition for S. abony. In terms of antioxidants; the extract had a total phenolic content of 34.0 mg GAE g?1 of extract and a DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity of 139.8 mg AAE g of extract. Using an in-well lysis technique, 73 Australian strains of Salmonella enteritidis were shown to possess a large plasmid, similar in size to that possessed by a reference phage type 4 strain. Many commonly used, structurally diverse, drugs block the human ether-a-go-go-related gene (hERG) K(+) channel to cause acquired long QT syndrome, which can lead to sudden death via lethal cardiac arrhythmias. This undesirable side effect is a major hurdle in the development of safe drugs. To gain insight about the structure of hERG and the nature of drug block we have produced structural models of the channel pore domain, into each of which we have docked a set of 20 hERG blockers. In the absence of an experimentally determined three-dimensional structure of hERG, each of the models was validated against site-directed mutagenesis data. First, hERG models were produced of the open and closed channel states, based on homology with the prokaryotic K(+) channel crystal structures. The modeled complexes were in partial agreement with the mutagenesis data. To improve agreement with mutagenesis data, a KcsA-based model was refined by rotating the four copies of the S6 transmembrane helix half a residue position toward the C-terminus, so as to place all residues known to be involved in drug binding in positions lining the central cavity. This model produces complexes that are consistent with mutagenesis data for smaller, but not larger, ligands. Larger ligands could be accommodated following refinement of this model by enlarging the cavity using the inherent flexibility about the glycine hinge (Gly648) in S6, to produce results consistent with the experimental data for the majority of ligands tested. 相似文献

To study the mechanisms by which antidiuretic hormone and prostaglandins regulate Na transport at the apical membranes of the cells of anuran tissues, studies were done with fluctuation analysis. Epithelia of frog skin (Rana pipiens) were treated with vasopressin alone, or treated with vasopressin after inhibition of Na transport by indomethacin. The tissues were bathed symmetrically with a Cl-HCO3 Ringer solution and short-circuited continuously. In this experimental circumstance, the amiloride-induced current noise power density spectra were of the Lorentzian type with little or no l/f noise, provided that "scraped" skins were used for study. Despite large changes of Na transport, especially in epithelia treated with indomethacin and vasopressin, the single-channel Na current remained essentially unchanged, whereas the density of amiloride-inhibitable, electrically conductive Na channels was increased by vasopressin and decreased by indomethacin. 相似文献

In contrast to the mouse immunoglobulin heavy chain and kappa light chain genes, very little is known about the regulation of expression of the immunoglobulin lambda light chain locus. To identify elements responsible for lambda gene regulation we mapped DNaseI hypersensitive sites associated with a functionally rearranged lambda 1 gene in nuclei from the myeloma cell line J558L. Tissue-specific hypersensitive sites were identified 2.3 to 2.5 kb upstream of the CAP site of both the lambda 1 gene and the unrearranged variable (V) lambda 2 gene segments. DNA sequences flanking the lambda 1 gene were isolated and tested for their influence on expression of the lambda 1 gene after transfection into myeloma cells and after injection into fertilized mouse eggs. Two enhancer elements were identified downstream of the lambda 1 gene. A proximal element (located 4 to 10 kb 3' of the gene) enhanced expression of a lambda 1 gene in stable myeloma cell transfectants but had no effect on the expression of a heterologous reporter gene in transient assays. A second, distal element, located approximately 30 kb 3' of the gene, enhanced heterologous expression in J558L cells expressing a lambda gene but not in a non-lambda myeloma cell line (SP2/0-Ag14). Co-injection of cosmids containing the lambda 1 gene and both the proximal and distal downstream elements into fertilized mouse eggs resulted in high-level expression of the lambda 1 transgene in B cells of transgenic mice. The identification of these lambda regulatory elements, in addition to contributing to an understanding of lambda gene regulation per se, will facilitate the study of the regulation of differential expression of kappa and lambda light chain genes in the immune system. 相似文献
