Aims Deforestation and biodiversity loss are two alarming, closely related problems, and the main factors triggering changes in land use. Indigenous agricultural practices in the western Amazon Basin are known as chakras, and their structure and dynamics are seemingly optimal for forest management. However, the variability in tree species and the degree of forest recovery after abandonment is poorly documented in this agroforestry system (AFS). The goals of this study were: (i) to investigate whether the different AFSs (chakras) preserve similar levels of forest diversity, (ii) to determine the effect of transformation of mature forests (MF) to chakras, in particular, forest alpha and beta diversity levels, and (iii) to investigate whether native tree species recovery leads to the original forest structure following chakra abandonment.  相似文献

Water-deficit stress (–1.0 MPa through polyethylene glycol 6000 for 2 h) decreased the relative water content (RWC) and leaf water potential (LWP) in the two jute species Corchorus capsularis L. (cv. JRC 212) and C. olitorius L. (cv. JRO 632), more so in the latter. Pretreatment of seeds with 5 m M CaCl2 improved the water uptake capacity without altering stomatal movement, whereas foliar spraying with 0.01 m M ABA reduced transpiration through the reduction of stomatal aperture. A combination of both treatments, i.e. seed treatment followed by foliar spraying, additively improved the water status under water-deficit stress. Efflux of K+ from the guard cells followed by stomatal closure was more rapid in C. capsularis than in C. olitorius under water-deficit stress. Uptake of [32P]-phosphate under water-deficit stress decreased more in C. olitorius than in C. capsularis and treatment of seeds with Ca2+ counteracted this decrease more markedly in the former species. These findings indicate that C. olitorius is more susceptible than C. capsularis to water-deficit stress.  相似文献

In this work it was hypothesized that secondary succession on sites that have been managed by single planting of mangrove species is compromised by residual stressors, which could reduce the ecosystem??s structural development and lower its functions. Forest structure and environmental characteristics of three planted mangrove stands are compared with reference sites. Structural attributes showed significant differences in the comparison of planted and reference stands. Avicennia schaueriana was the dominant species within both natural regeneration and old-growth stands in terms of basal area (99.2 and 99.4?%, 69.6 and 84.5?%, and 59.0 and 87.1?% for Itacorubi, Saco Grande, and Ratones, respectively). Restoration stands were dominated by Laguncularia racemosa (80.6 and 94.2?% for Saco Grande and Ratones, respectively), except at one site (Itacorubi), where A. schaueriana prevailed (99.7?%). Even though restoration and regeneration stands at Itacorubi showed similar species composition and dominance, cohort sorting revealed an inferior regeneration potential in the restoration stand. Multiple correlation analysis indicated that variables related to elevation disruptions (p w ?=?0.521) were the environmental drivers responsible for the differences observed in forest structure. At restoration sites an impaired pattern of secondary succession was observed, indicating that single species plantings may be ineffective if characteristics of the site, as well as of the area surrounding it, are not considered. The inadequate management of restoration sites can therefore have implications for both immediate and long-term large-scale ecosystem services.  相似文献

The Sundarban of India and Bangladesh (about 6000 km²) are the only mangrove forests inhabited by a sizeable population of tigers. The adjoining area also supports one of the highest human densities and experiences severe human-tiger conflicts. We used GPS-Satellite and VHF radio-collars on 6 (3 males and 3 female) tigers to study their ranging patterns and habitat preference. The average home range (95% Fixed Kernel) for resident females was 56.4 (SE 5.69) and for males it was 110 (SE 49) km². Tigers crossed an average of 5 water channels > 30 meters per day with a mean width of 54 meters, whereas channels larger than 400 meters were rarely crossed. Tigers spent over 58% of their time within Phoenix habitat but compositional analysis showed a habitat preference of the order Avicennia-Sonneratia > Phoenix > Ceriops > Barren > Water. Average daily distance moved was 4.6 km (range 0.1–23). Activity of tigers peaked between 05:00 hours and 10:00 hours showing some overlap with human activity. Territory boundaries were demarcated by large channels which tigers intensively patrolled. Extra caution should be taken while fishing or honey collection during early morning in Avicennia-Sonneratia and Phoenix habitat types along wide channels to reduce human-tiger conflict. Considering home-range core areas as exclusive, tiger density was estimated at 4.6 (SE range 3.6 to 6.7) tigers/100 km2 giving a total population of 76 (SE range 59–110) tigers in the Indian Sundarban. Reluctance of tigers to cross wide water channels combined with increasing commercial boat traffic and sea level rise due to climate change pose a real threat of fragmenting the Sundarban tiger population.  相似文献

Tumor differentiation factor (TDF) is a protein produced by the pituitary and secreted into the blood stream. The mechanism of its action has still not been elucidated, although the associated protein receptor was identified. Furthermore, the TDF protein does not have any homology with other known proteins, and the crystal structure of TDF also is not available at this time. To gain some insight into the structure of this rather underexplored protein, we have performed a molecular dynamics simulation of a model TDF structure. The structural stability of this protein is evaluated as a function of time. The time dependent structural changes of four cysteine residues present in this structure also are explored.  相似文献

Quantitative modeling in cell biology: what is it good for?   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Recently, there has been a surge in the number of pioneering studies combining experiments with quantitative modeling to explain both relatively simple modules of molecular machinery of the cell and to achieve system-level understanding of cellular networks. Here we discuss the utility and methods of modeling and review several current models of cell signaling, cytoskeletal self-organization, nuclear transport, and the cell cycle. We discuss successes of and barriers to modeling in cell biology and its future directions, and we argue, using the field of bacterial chemotaxis as an example, that the closer the complete systematic understanding of cell behavior is, the more important modeling becomes and the more experiment and theory merge.  相似文献

Aerobic heterotrophic bacteria present in the surface water of three cold and nutrient-poor lakes in the Chilean Patagonia (Alto Reino, Las Dos Torres and Venus) were analysed for genetic similarity and metabolic diversity using 16S ribosomal DNA and the Biolog EcoPlateTM system, respectively. Bacterial fingerprints of water samples in enriched and non-enriched nutrient broth demonstrated a >50% fingerprinting similarity between the lakes. Metabolic activity was also similar. However, the Biolog EcoPlateTM system carbon substrates revealed functional diversity. Lake Las Dos Torres showed the most fingerprinting similarity between enriched and non-enriched cold water samples. The amounts of living and viable bacteria were also higher in this lake’s water sample, suggesting a predominance of facultative oligotrophic groups. DNA sequencing analysis demonstrated the presence of phylum Bacteroidetes in Lake Alto Reino; phyla Bacteroidetes and Gammaproteobacteria in Lake Las Dos Torres; and phyla Bacteroidetes, Alphaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria in Lake Venus. Although each lake had a unique bacterial community structure, the different bacterial groups may be performing similar metabolic functions, given the similarity in extreme environmental conditions.  相似文献

Four cysteine residues (Cys866, Cys917, Cys1094, and Cys1105) have direct roles in cooperatively regulating Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) catalytic activity. Additional site-directed mutagenesis experiments now provide evidence that two of these residues (Cys866 and Cys917) act together as a redox-sensitive switch, allowing JAK2's catalytic activity to be directly regulated by the redox state of the cell. We created several variants of the truncated JAK2 (GST/(NΔ661)rJAK2), which incorporated cysteine-to-serine or cysteine-to-alanine mutations. The catalytic activities of these mutant enzymes were evaluated by in vitro autokinase assays and by in situ autophosphorylation and transphosphorylation assays. Cysteine-to-alanine mutagenesis revealed that the mechanistic role of Cys866 and Cys917 is functionally distinct from that of Cys1094 and Cys1105. Most notable is the observation that the robust activity of the CC866,917AA mutant is unaltered by pretreatment with dithiothreitol or o-iodosobenzoate, unlike all other JAK2 variants previously examined. This work provides the first direct evidence for a cysteine-based redox-sensitive switch that regulates JAK2 catalytic activity. The presence of this redox-sensitive switch predicts that reactive oxygen species can impair the cell's response to JAK-coupled cytokines under conditions of oxidative stress, which we confirm in a murine pancreatic β-islet cell line.  相似文献
