We know little about the macroevolution of life-history traits along environmental gradients, especially with regard to the directionality compared to the ancestral states and the associated costs to other functions. Here we examine how age and size at maturity evolved when Lestes damselflies shifted from their ancestral temporary pond habitat (i.e., ponds that may dry once every decade or so) to extremely ephemeral vernal ponds (ponds that routinely dry completely each year). Larvae of three species were reared from eggs until emergence under different levels of photoperiod and transient starvation stress. Compared to the two temporary-pond Lestes, the phylogenetically derived vernal-pond Lestes dryas developed more rapidly across photoperiod treatments until the final instar, and only expressed plasticity in development time in the final instar under photoperiod levels that simulated a later hatching date. The documented change in development rate can be considered adaptive and underlies the success of the derived species in vernal ponds. Results suggest associated costs of faster development are lower mass at maturity and lower immune function after transient starvation stress. These costs may not only have impeded further evolution of the routine development rate to what is physiologically maximal, but also maintained some degree of plasticity to time constraints when the habitat shift occurred. 相似文献

Paleontological analysis of remains from Wezmeh Cave in western Iran have yielded a Holocene Chalcolithic archeological assemblage, a rich Late Pleistocene carnivore faunal assemblage, and an isolated unerupted human maxillary premolar (P(3) or possibly P(4)). Species representation and U-series dating of faunal teeth place the carnivore assemblage during oxygen isotope stages (OIS) 3 and 2, and noninvasive gamma spectrometry dating of the human premolar places it at least as old as early OIS 2. The human premolar crown morphology is not diagnostic of late archaic versus early modern human affinities, but its buccolingual diameter places it at the upper limits of Late Pleistocene human P(3) and P(4) dimensions and separate from a terminal Pleistocene regional sample. Wezmeh Cave therefore provides additional Paleolithic human remains from the Zagros Mountains and further documents Late Pleistocene human association with otherwise carnivore-dominated cave assemblages. 相似文献

Little is known about the ecological correlates and macro-evolution of life history plasticity to time constraints. Here, we compared age and mass at emergence and their plasticity toward combinations of time constraints (delayed larval development), food level and predation risk (caged dragonfly larvae) by rearing two temporary-pond Lestes damselflies ( L. congener and L. forcipatus ) and the derived vernal-pond L. dryas from the eggs until adult emergence in outdoor tubs. Life history plasticity under time constraints, low food and predation risk was as predicted by optimality models. Delayed larvae in all three species accelerated development and showed a lower fat content and a substantially elevated mortality rate. At low food, all species emerged later at a smaller mass. Also under predation risk adults of all species emerged later, and (at high food) at a smaller mass. Unexpectedly, delayed larvae did not show a smaller life history response to predation risk imposed by dragonfly larvae. Compared to the two temporary-pond Lestes studied, the derived species that invaded more ephemeral vernal ponds showed a faster development rate and a lower deceleration of development to low food. It also showed a lower acceleration of development to time constraints, possibly reflecting that it reached development rates near to its physiological maximum. Unexpectedly, the vernal-pond Lestes did not slow its development less under predation risk. Our results stress the importance of evaluating ecological and evolutionary correlates of life history plasticity under as realistic conditions as possible. 相似文献

Chromosomal rearrangements involving the EVI1 proto-oncogene are a recurrent finding in myeloid leukemias and are indicative of a poor prognosis. Rearrangements of the EVI1 locus are often associated with monosomy 7 or cytogenetic detectable deletions of part of 7q. As EVI1 overexpression alone is not sufficient to induce leukemia, loss of a 7q tumour suppressor gene might be a required cooperating event. To test this hypothesis, we performed high-resolution array comparative genomic hybridization analysis of twelve EVI1 overexpressing patients and three EVI1 deregulated cell lines to search for 7q submicroscopic deletions. This analysis lead to the delineation of two critical regions, one of 0.39 Mb on 7q35 containing the CNTNAP2 gene and one of 1.33 Mb on chromosome bands 7q35–q36 comprising nine genes in EVI1 deregulated cell lines. These findings open the way to further studies aimed at identifying the culprit EVI1 implicated tumour suppressor genes on 7q. 相似文献

1.?To better predict effects of climate change and predation risk on prey animals and ecosystems, we need studies documenting not only latitudinal patterns in growth rate but also growth plasticity to temperature and predation risk and the underlying proximate mechanisms: behaviour (food intake) and digestive physiology (growth efficiency). The mechanistic underpinnings of predator-induced growth increases remain especially poorly understood. 2.?We reared larvae from replicated northern and southern populations of the damselfly Ischnura elegans in a common garden experiment manipulating temperature and predation risk and quantified growth rate, food intake and growth efficiency. 3.?The predator-induced and temperature-induced growth accelerations were the same at both latitudes, despite considerably faster growth rates in the southern populations. While the higher growth rates in the southern populations and the high rearing temperature were driven by both an increased food intake and a higher growth efficiency, the higher growth rates under predation risk were completely driven by a higher growth efficiency, despite a lowered food intake. 4.?The emerging pattern that higher growth rates associated with latitude, temperature and predation risk were all (partly or completely) mediated by a higher growth efficiency has two major implications. First, it indicates that energy allocation trade-offs and the associated physiological costs play a major role both in shaping large-scale geographic variation in growth rates and in shaping the extent and direction of growth rate plasticity. Secondly, it suggests that the efficiency of energy transfer in aquatic food chains, where damselfly larvae are important intermediate predators, will be higher in southern populations, at higher temperatures and under predation risk. This may eventually contribute to the lengthening of food chains under these conditions and highlights that the prey identity may determine the influence of predation risk on food chain length. 相似文献

Biogenesis of lysosome‐related organelles (LROs) complex‐1 (BLOC‐1) is an eight‐subunit complex involved in lysosomal trafficking. Interacting proteins of these subunits expand the understanding of its biological functions. With the implementation of the naïve Bayesian analysis, we found that a human uncharacterized 20 kDa coiled‐coil KxDL protein, KXD1, is a BLOS1‐interacting protein. In vitro binding assays confirmed the interaction between BLOS1 and KXD1. The mouse KXD1 homolog was widely expressed and absent in Kxd1 knockout (KO) mice. BLOS1 was apparently reduced in Kxd1‐KO mice. Mild defects in the melanosomes of the retinal pigment epithelia and in the platelet dense granules of the Kxd1‐KO mouse were observed, mimicking a mouse model of mild Hermansky–Pudlak syndrome that affects the biogenesis of LROs. 相似文献

Insulin resistance is a characteristic of type-2 diabetes and its development is associated with an increased fat consumption. Muscle is one of the tissues that becomes insulin resistant after high fat (HF) feeding. The aim of the present study is to identify processes involved in the development of HF-induced insulin resistance in muscle of ApOE3*Leiden mice by using microarrays. These mice are known to become insulin resistant on a HF diet. Differential gene expression was measured in muscle using the Affymetrix mouse plus 2.0 array. To get more insight in the processes, affected pathway analysis was performed with a new tool, PathVisio. PathVisio is a pathway editor customized with plug-ins (1) to visualize microarray data on pathways and (2) to perform statistical analysis to select pathways of interest. The present study demonstrated that with pathway analysis, using PathVisio, a large variety of processes can be investigated. The significantly regulated genes in muscle of ApOE3*Leiden mice after 12 weeks of HF feeding were involved in several biological pathways including fatty acid beta oxidation, fatty acid biosynthesis, insulin signaling, oxidative stress and inflammation. 相似文献
