Mammals have experienced a massive decline in their populations and geographic ranges worldwide. The sloth bear, Melursus ursinus (Shaw, 1791), is one of many species facing conservation threats. Despite being endangered in Nepal, decades of inattention to the situation have hindered their conservation and management. We assessed the distribution and patterns of habitat use by sloth bears in Chitwan National Park (CNP), Nepal. We conducted sign surveys from March to June, 2020, in 4 × 4 km grids (n = 45). We collected detection/non‐detection data along a 4‐km trail that was divided into 20 continuous segments of 200 m each. We obtained environmental, ecological, and anthropogenic covariates to understand determinants of sloth bear habitat occupancy. The data were analyzed using the single‐species single‐season occupancy method, with a spatially correlated detection. Using repeated observations, these models accounted for the imperfect detectability of the species to provide robust estimates of habitat occupancy. The model‐averaged occupancy estimate for the sloth bear was 69% and the detection probability was 0.25. The probability of habitat occupancy by sloth bears increased with the presence of termites and fruits and in rugged, dry, open, undisturbed habitats. Our results indicate that the sloth bear is elusive, functionally unique, and widespread in CNP. Future conservation interventions and action plans aimed at sloth bear management must adequately consider their habitat requirements. 相似文献

Several microtubule-binding proteins including EB1, dynactin, APC, and CLIP-170 localize to the plus-ends of growing microtubules. Although these proteins can bind to microtubules independently, evidence for interactions among them has led to the hypothesis of a plus-end complex. Here we clarify the interaction between EB1 and dynactin and show that EB1 binds directly to the N-terminus of the p150(Glued) subunit. One function of a plus-end complex may be to regulate microtubule dynamics. Overexpression of either EB1 or p150(Glued) in cultured cells bundles microtubules, suggesting that each may enhance microtubule stability. The morphology of these bundles, however, differs dramatically, indicating that EB1 and dynactin may act in different ways. Disruption of the dynactin complex augments the bundling effect of EB1, suggesting that dynactin may regulate the effect of EB1 on microtubules. In vitro assays were performed to elucidate the effects of EB1 and p150(Glued) on microtubule polymerization, and they show that p150(Glued) has a potent microtubule nucleation effect, whereas EB1 has a potent elongation effect. Overall microtubule dynamics may result from a balance between the individual effects of plus-end proteins. Differences in the expression and regulation of plus-end proteins in different cell types may underlie previously noted differences in microtubule dynamics. 相似文献

In the present study, changes in localization of each inhibin subunit in the ovary were investigated during the estrous cycle of the golden hamster. The effect of LH surge on changes in localization in inhibin alpha subunit in the ovary was also investigated. Inhibin alpha subunit was localized in granulosa cells of various stages of follicles throughout the estrous cycle. Inhibin alpha subunit was also present in numerous interstitial cells on days 1 and 2 (day 1 = day of ovulation), but the number of positive interstitial cells was fewer on days 3 and almost disappeared on day 4 of the estrous cycle. Newly formed luteal cells were also positive for inhibin alpha subunit on days 1 and 2. On the other hand, positive reactions for inhibin beta A and beta B subunits were only present in the granulosa cells of healthy antral follicles. However, a positive reaction for inhibin beta B subunit in peripheral mural granulosa cells disappeared on days 3 and 4 of the estrous cycle. Treatment with LHRH-AS at 1100 h on day 4 completely blocked the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge and ovulation, although relatively high concentrations of plasma follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were maintained throughout the experiment. There were few positive reactions for inhibin alpha subunit in theca and interstitial cells 24 hr after LHRH-AS injection. The effect of LHRH-AS treatment was blocked by a single injection of 10 IU human chorionic gonadotropin. These results suggest that the major source of dimeric inhibin in the cyclic hamster was granulosa cells of healthy antral follicles. Different distribution pattern of inhibin beta A from beta B subunits in large antral follicles on days 3 and 4 of the estrous cycle suggests different secretion patterns of inhibin A from B on these days. Furthermore, the LH surge may be an important factor to induce production of inhibin alpha subunit in interstitial cells of the cyclic hamster. 相似文献

To clarify the mechanisms of methane transport from the rhizosphere into the atmosphere through rice plants (Oryza sativa L.), the methane emission rate was measured from a shoot whose roots had been kept in a culture solution with a high methane concentration or exposed to methane gas in the gas phase by using a cylindrical chamber. No clear correlation was observed between change in the transpiration rate and that in the methane emission rate. Methane was mostly released from the culm, which is an aggregation of leaf sheaths, but not from the leaf blade. Micropores which are different from stomata were newly found at the abaxial epidermis of the leaf sheath by scanning electron microscopy. The measured methane emission rate was much higher than the calculated methane emission rate that would result from transpiration and the methane concentration in the culture solution. Rice roots could absorb methane gas in the gas phase without water uptake. These results suggest that methane dissolved in the soil water surrounding the roots diffuses into the cell-wall water of the root cells, gasifies in the root cortex, and then is mostly released through the micropores in the leaf sheaths. 相似文献

A stranger mother-son pair of the chimpanzee was observed twice interacting with conspecifics of a neighbouring unit-group:
first, when the mother and son accidentally encountered them within the core area of the former; second, when the mother and
son temporarily immigrated for about one week. On both occasions, the mother and son were severely attacked by adult males
of the neighbouring unit-group, and would have been killed had it not been for human intervention. The main target of the
aggression was not the infant, but the mother. Some adult males intervened and prevented other males and females from attacking
the mother-son pair. Moreover, most adult males displayed an ambivalent attitude since they showed aggression towards them
on one occasion, but groomed, reassured and played on another. The reasons for the variable responses of adult males to a

Summary The translation activity of mRNA coding for argininosuccinate synthetase in total RNA extracted from the liver of three patients with quantitative-type citrullinemia was determined using a cell-free translation system. In two patients, the hepatic content of the enzyme was about 20% of the control value, whereas translatable mRNA level for the enzyme was similar to or slightly lower than those of control livers. In the third patient, the enzyme content was about 50% of the control value, and mRNA activity for the enzyme was low normal. These results indicate that at least in the first two patients, the decrease in the enzyme protein is due either to increased degradation of the enzyme or to decreased translation in the patient's liver. 相似文献
