We used delay-interval interference to investigate the nature of the differential outcomes effect (DOE) in pigeons. Birds were trained on a delayed matching-to-sample (DMS) task under either common outcome or differential outcome conditions, and then presented with visual interference during the delay period. Consistent with previous literature, the common outcomes birds were slower to learn the DMS task than the differential outcomes birds. The common outcome birds were also more impaired by the visual interference than the differential outcomes birds. Our findings are consistent with the view that the birds trained with common outcomes were likely remembering the sample stimulus during the delay period, and hence were disrupted by the visual interference, whereas the birds trained with differential outcomes were likely relying on the different emotional reactions elicited by the different outcomes to guide their choice behaviour, and hence were less affected by the visual interference. Our findings suggest that the DOE is not truly evidence of anticipatory mediation of short-term retention in pigeons, but rather emotionally driven decision making, which is not truly anticipatory in nature.  相似文献

The continuing depletion of nutrients from agricultural soils in Sub-Saharan African is accompanied by a lack of substantial progress in crop yield improvement. In this paper we investigate yield gaps for corn under two scenarios: a micro-dosing scenario with marginal increases in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) of 10 kg ha−1 and a larger yet still conservative scenario with proposed N and P applications of 80 and 20 kg ha−1 respectively. The yield gaps are calculated from a database of historical FAO crop fertilizer trials at 1358 locations for Sub-Saharan Africa and South America. Our approach allows connecting experimental field scale data with continental policy recommendations. Two critical findings emerged from the analysis. The first is the degree to which P limits increases in corn yields. For example, under a micro-dosing scenario, in Africa, the addition of small amounts of N alone resulted in mean yield increases of 8% while the addition of only P increased mean yields by 26%, with implications for designing better balanced fertilizer distribution schemes. The second finding was the relatively large amount of yield increase possible for a small, yet affordable amount of fertilizer application. Using African and South American fertilizer prices we show that the level of investment needed to achieve these results is considerably less than 1% of Agricultural GDP for both a micro-dosing scenario and for the scenario involving higher yet still conservative fertilizer application rates. In the latter scenario realistic mean yield increases ranged between 28 to 85% in South America and 71 to 190% in Africa (mean plus one standard deviation). External investment in this low technology solution has the potential to kick start development and could complement other interventions such as better crop varieties and improved economic instruments to support farmers.  相似文献

Risk stratification of patients with systolic chronic heart failure (HF) is critical to better identify those who may benefit from invasive therapeutic strategies such as cardiac transplantation. Proteomics has been used to provide prognostic information in various diseases. Our aim was to investigate the potential value of plasma proteomic profiling for risk stratification in HF. A proteomic profiling using surface enhanced laser desorption ionization - time of flight - mass spectrometry was performed in a case/control discovery population of 198 patients with systolic HF (left ventricular ejection fraction <45%): 99 patients who died from cardiovascular cause within 3 years and 99 patients alive at 3 years. Proteomic scores predicting cardiovascular death were developed using 3 regression methods: support vector machine, sparse partial least square discriminant analysis, and lasso logistic regression. Forty two ion m/z peaks were differentially intense between cases and controls in the discovery population and were used to develop proteomic scores. In the validation population, score levels were higher in patients who subsequently died within 3 years. Similar areas under the curves (0.66 – 0.68) were observed for the 3 methods. After adjustment on confounders, proteomic scores remained significantly associated with cardiovascular mortality. Use of the proteomic scores allowed a significant improvement in discrimination of HF patients as determined by integrated discrimination improvement and net reclassification improvement indexes. In conclusion, proteomic analysis of plasma proteins may help to improve risk prediction in HF patients.  相似文献

Forty-three adult patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) were treated by slow intravenous infusions of vinblastine. Nineteen had ITP of recent onset (i.e. of less than 6 months duration) and had contraindication to steroids (3 patients), refractoriness to steroids (6 patients) or to steroids and high dose intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIg, 10 patients). Of the 19 patients, 10 achieved complete response (CR), 2 achieved partial response (PR), 2 had minor response (MR) and the remaining 5 patients had no response (NR). Six of the complete responders remained in CR after 12 to 48 months, whereas all other responders relapsed within 3 months, in spite of maintenance therapy. Twenty-four patients had chronic ITP (i.e. of 6 months duration or more) and had showed no or only transient response to steroids and/or splenectomy, and in many of them, to other therapeutic approaches. Four achieved CR, 4 PR, 6 MR and 10 NR. All but 3 responses were shorter than 3 months, in spite of maintenance therapy. Most responses to slow infusions of vinblastine began after the first infusion. Main side effects included leukopenia in 9 patients (but with absolute neutropenia in only one) and peripheral neuropathy in 2 patients. Interval from diagnosis was the only prognostic factor of response to treatment. We conclude that slow infusions of vinblastine may be a useful approach in ITP of recent onset, when contraindication or refractoriness to steroids and/or IVIg exists. In our experience, this treatment has limited benefit in chronic ITP. In addition, it remains to be demonstrated that slow infusions of vinca alkaloids have any superiority over intravenous bolus injections of the same drugs.  相似文献

Analysis by SELDI-TOF-MS of low abundance proteins makes it possible to select peaks as candidate biomarkers. Our aim was to define a purification strategy to optimise identification by MS of peaks detected by SELDI-TOF-MS from plasma or serum, regardless of any treatment by a combinatorial peptide ligand library (CPLL). We describe 2 principal steps in purification. First, choosing the appropriate sample containing the selected peak requires setting up a databank that records all the m/z peaks detected from samples in different conditions. Second, the specific purification process must be chosen: separation was achieved with either chromatographic columns or liquid-phase isoelectric focusing, both combined when appropriate with reverse-phase chromatography. After purification, peaks were separated by gel electrophoresis and the candidate proteins were analyzed by nano-liquid-chromatography-MS/MS. We chose 4m/z peaks (9400, 13,571, 13,800 and 15,557) selected for their differential expression between two conditions, as examples to explain the different strategies of purification, and we successfully identified 3 of them. Despite some limitations, our strategy to purify and identify peaks selected from SELDI-TOF-MS analysis was effective.  相似文献

Although vitamin C deficiency and scurvy are generally considered as pure nutritional disorders, only a minority of the vitamin C concentration is determined by food intake. In the presence of transition metals (iron and copper), the antiscorbutic factor shifts from an antioxidant to a pro-oxidant function. Haptoglobin (Hp) is a plasma α-2 glycoprotein characterized by 3 common phenotypes (Hp 1-1, Hp 2-1 and Hp 2-2). Its free hemoglobin (Hb)-binding capacity prevents Hb-driven oxidative damage. When the antioxidant capacity of Hp is insufficient, its role is taken over by hemopexin (heme-binding protein) and by vitamin C (free radical scavenger). The Hp 2-2 phenotype has a lower capacity to inhibit oxidation and vitamin C depletion. In this article, two consequences of this major finding are tackled. The Hp polymorphism is an important non-nutritional modifying factor in the pathogenesis of vitamin C deficiency and scurvy, which may explain the success of long-range human migration by the natural selection of some populations characterized by high Hp 1 allele frequencies. Moreover, we propose tailoring the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) values of vitamin C, taking into consideration the Hp phenotype dependency.  相似文献

Objective

Left ventricular (LV) remodeling following myocardial infarction (MI) is characterized by progressive alterations of structure and function, named LV remodeling. Although several risk factors such as infarct size have been identified, LV remodeling remains difficult to predict in clinical practice. Changes within the extracellular matrix, involving matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), are an integral part of left ventricular (LV) remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI). We investigated the temporal profile of circulating MMPs and TIMPs and their relations with LV remodeling at 1 year and clinical outcome at 3 years in post-MI patients.

Methods

This prospective multicentre study included 246 patients with a first anterior MI. Serial echocardiographic studies were performed at hospital discharge, 3 months, and 1 year after MI, and analysed at a core laboratory. LV remodeling was defined as the percent change in LV end-diastolic volume (EDV) from baseline to 1 year. Serum samples were obtained at hospital discharge, 1, 3, and 12 months. Multiplex technology was used for analysis of MMP-1, -2, -3, -8, -9, -13, and TIMP-1, -2, -3, -4 serum levels.

Results

Baseline levels of MMP-8 and MMP-9 were positively associated with changes in LVEDV (P = 0.01 and 0.02, respectively). When adjusted for major baseline characteristics, MMP-8 levels remained an independent predictor LV remodeling (P = 0.025). By univariate analysis, there were positive relations between cardiovascular death or hospitalization for heart failure during the 3-year follow-up and the baseline levels of MMP-2 (P = 0.03), MMP-8 (P = 0.002), and MMP-9 (P = 0.03). By multivariate analysis, MMP-8 was the only MMP remaining significantly associated with clinical outcome (P = 0.02).

Conclusion

Baseline serum MMP-8 is a significant predictor of LV remodeling and cardiovascular outcome after MI and may help to improve risk stratification.  相似文献
