ABSTRACT: INTRODUCTION: Central nervous system involvement in rheumatoid arthritis is infrequent. The most frequent neurological manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis are peripheral neuropathy and cervical spinal cord compression due to subluxation of the cervical vertebrae. Cerebral rheumatoid vasculitis is an uncommon and serious complication which can be life-threatening. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old North African Tunisian Caucasian woman presented with a six-week history of headache. She had suffered seropositive and destructive rheumatoid arthritis for nine years without any extra-articular complications. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain with the T2 sequence showed high-intensity signal images at the frontal and parietal corticosubcortical junction suggesting hemispheric vasculitis. CONCLUSIONS: Cerebral vasculitis is an infrequent complication in rheumatoid arthritis which is associated with high morbidity and in some cases can be life-threatening. Early assessment and a high index of suspicion to recognize such complications are essential in managing these patients.  相似文献

Abstract

Retama raetam essential oils (EOs) composition and biological activities were assessed during three developmental periods. The essential oil yield varied significantly among the developmental stages and the optimal was detected at the fresh fruiting stage (0.34%). In addition, EOs composition varied significantly (p < 0.05) according to the different developmental stages. In fact, 2-Methoxy-4-vinylphenol, linalool, and 1-octen-3-ol were the main compounds in the vegetative, flowering, and the fresh fruiting stages, respectively. Developmental stage had also a strong effect on EOs antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. In fact, during the fresh fruiting stage, IC50 and EC50 values of the antioxidant assays were 2 to 3 times inferior to all others stages. Concerning the determination of the diameter of inhibition, a slight to high antimicrobial activity was revealed against 12 bacteria and 4 yeasts. Once again, EOs from the fresh fruiting stage had higher bactericidal effect than those from the flowering and vegetative ones (IZ varied from 10 to 13 mm). The results of this investigation showed for the first time the high accumulation of EOs at the early stages of fruit development making the fresh fruiting optimal stage for the extraction of powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial EOs.  相似文献

This study aims to contribute to a more detailed knowledge of the biogeography of coccolithophores in the Equatorial and Southeastern Pacific Ocean. Census data of fossil coccoliths are presented in a suite of core-top sediment samples from 15°N to 50.6°S and from 71°W to 93°W. Following standard preparation of smear slides, a total of 19 taxa are recognized in light microscopy and their relative abundances are determined for 134 surface sediment samples. Considering the multivariate character of oceanic conditions and their effects on phytoplankton, a Factor Analysis was performed and three factors were retained. Factor 1, dominated by Florisphaera profunda and Gephyrocapsa oceanica, includes samples located under warm water masses and indicates the occurrence of calcite dissolution in the water column in the area offshore Chile. Factor 2 is related to cold, low-salinity surface-water masses from the Chilean upwelling, and is dominated by Emiliania huxleyi, Gephyrocapsa sp. < 3 μm, Coccolithus pelagicus and Gephyrocapsa muellerae. Factor 3 is linked to more saline, coastal upwelling areas where Calcidiscus leptoporus and Helicosphaera carteri are the dominant species.  相似文献

Canopy light interception determines the amount of energy captured by a crop, and is thus critical to modeling crop growth and yield, and may substantially contribute to the prediction uncertainty of crop growth models (CGMs). We thus analyzed the canopy light interception models of the 26 wheat (Triticum aestivum) CGMs used by the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP). Twenty-one CGMs assume that the light extinction coefficient (K) is constant, varying from 0.37 to 0.80 depending on the model. The other models take into account the illumination conditions and assume either that all green surfaces in the canopy have the same inclination angle (θ) or that θ distribution follows a spherical distribution. These assumptions have not yet been evaluated due to a lack of experimental data. Therefore, we conducted a field experiment with five cultivars with contrasting leaf stature sown at normal and double row spacing, and analyzed θ distribution in the canopies from three-dimensional canopy reconstructions. In all the canopies, θ distribution was well represented by an ellipsoidal distribution. We thus carried out an intercomparison between the light interception models of the AgMIP–Wheat CGMs ensemble and a physically based K model with ellipsoidal leaf angle distribution and canopy clumping (KellC). Results showed that the KellC model outperformed current approaches under most illumination conditions and that the uncertainty in simulated wheat growth and final grain yield due to light models could be as high as 45%. Therefore, our results call for an overhaul of light interception models in CGMs.  相似文献

The removal efficiencies of pathogens such as Salmonella (S), helminths ova (H), protozoan cysts (P), total coliforms (TC), faecal coliforms (FC) and faecal streptococci (FS) by three treatment processes: aerated lagoon (AL), activated sludge (AS) and anaerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR) were evaluated by means of standard microbiological numeration methods. The micro-toxicity and phyto-toxicity of wastewaters were monitored by LUMIStox and germination index (GI) of Lepidium sativum tests. The results of municipal wastewaters receiving industrial effluents such as Sfax and Mahres were compared with other municipal wastewaters receiving mainly domestic effluents such as Ksour-Essaf. The anaerobic MBR allowed an effective removal of 100% for all the microorganisms tested. The average removal of TC, FC, FS, S, H and P was 1.65log(10), 1.42log(10), 1.23log(10), 0.91log(10), 52.23% and 76.15% in AL system and 0.62-0.84log(10), 0.87-0.93log(10), 0.71-0.78log(10), 0.81-2.71log(10), 59-74.1% and 59.84-72.2% in AS processes, respectively. LUMIStox and GI of L. sativum tests demonstrated that Ksour-Essaf wastewater (KW) was fairly toxic, while Sfax wastewater (SW) exhibited a high toxicity. This toxicity caused the inhibition of the anaerobic consortia when the MBR was fed with the SW. Moreover, the COD and the micro-toxicity increased during the day, parallel to the industrial and domestic activities resulting in the toxic character of SW during the day. SW treated in the AL remained toxic whereas the toxicity of KW treated in the AS or in anaerobic MBR decreased considerably. However, the anaerobic MBR showed a high efficiency in removing toxicity for both SW and KW. The quality of the anaerobic MBR permeate largely conforms with the microbiological WHO guidelines for unrestricted irrigation.  相似文献

Previous genomewide association studies (GWAS) and meta-analyses have enumerated several genes/loci in major histocompatibility complex region, which are consistently associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in different ethnic populations. Given the genetic heterogeneity of the disease, it is necessary to replicate these susceptibility loci in other populations. In this case, we investigate the analysis of two SNPs, rs13192471 and rs6457617, from the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region with the risk of RA in Tunisian population. These SNPs were previously identified to have a strong RA association signal in several GWAS studies. A case–control sample composed of 142 RA patients and 123 healthy controls was analysed. Genotyping of rs13192471 and rs6457617 was carried out using real-time PCR methods by TaqMan allelic discrimination assay. A trend of significant association was found in rs6457617 TT genotype with susceptibility to RA (\(P = 0.04\), \(p_{c} = 0.08\), \(\hbox {OR} = 1.73\)). Moreover, using multivariable analysis, the combination of rs6457617*TT–HLA-DRB1*\(04^{+}\) increased risk of RA (\(\hbox {OR} = 2.38\)), which suggest a gene–gene interaction event between rs6457617 located within the HLA-DQB1 and HLA-DRB1. Additionally, haplotypic analysis highlighted a significant association of rs6457617*T–HLA-DRB1*\(04^{+}\) haplotype with susceptibility to RA (\(P = 0.018\), \(p_{c} = 0.036\), \(\hbox {OR} = 1.72\)). An evidence of association was shown subsequently in \(\hbox {antiCCP}^{+}\) subgroup with rs6457617 both in T allele and TT genotype (\(P = 0.01\), \(p_{c} = 0.03\), \(\hbox {OR} = 1.66\) and \(P = 0.008\), \(p_{c} = 0.024\), \(\hbox {OR} = 1.28\), respectively). However, no association was shown for rs13192471 polymorphism with susceptibility and severity to RA. This study suggests the involvement of rs6457617 locus as risk variant for susceptibility/severity to RA in Tunisian population. Secondly, it highlights the gene–gene interaction between HLA-DQB1 and HLA-DRB1.  相似文献
