Background
The main source of HIV prevalence estimates are household and population-based surveys; however, high refusal rates may hinder the interpretation of such estimates. The study objective was to evaluate whether population HIV prevalence estimates can be adjusted for survey non-response using mortality rates.Methodology/Principal Findings
Data come from the longitudinal Africa Centre Demographic Information System (ACDIS), in rural South Africa. Mortality rates for persons tested and not tested in the 2005 HIV surveillance were available from routine household surveillance. Assuming HIV status among individuals contacted but who refused to test (non-response) is missing at random and mortality among non-testers can be related to mortality of those tested a mathematical model was developed. Non-parametric bootstrapping was used to estimate the 95% confidence intervals around the estimates. Mortality rates were higher among untested (16.9 per thousand person-years) than tested population (11.6 per thousand person-years), suggesting higher HIV prevalence in the former. Adjusted HIV prevalence for females (15–49 years) was 31.6% (95% CI 26.1–37.1) compared to observed 25.2% (95% CI 24.0–26.4). For males (15–49 years) adjusted HIV prevalence was 19.8% (95% CI 14.8–24.8), compared to observed 13.2% (95% CI 12.1–14.3). For both sexes (15–49 years) combined, adjusted prevalence was 27.5% (95% CI 23.6–31.3), and observed prevalence was 19.7% (95% CI 19.6–21.3). Overall, observed prevalence underestimates the adjusted prevalence by around 7 percentage points (37% relative difference).Conclusions/Significance
We developed a simple approach to adjust HIV prevalence estimates for survey non-response. The approach has three features that make it easy to implement and effective in adjusting for selection bias than other approaches. Background
The association of HIV with chronic morbidity and inflammatory markers (cytokines) in older adults (50+years) is potentially relevant for clinical care, but data from African populations is scarce.Objective
To examine levels of chronic morbidity by HIV and ART status in older adults (50+years) and subsequent associations with selected pro-inflammatory cytokines and body mass index.Methods
Ordinary, ordered and generalized ordered logistic regression techniques were employed to compare chronic morbidity (heart disease (angina), arthritis, stroke, hypertension, asthma and diabetes) and cytokines (Interleukins-1 and -6, C-Reactive Protein and Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha) by HIV and ART status on a cross-sectional random sample of 422 older adults nested within a defined rural South African population based demographic surveillance.Results
Using a composite measure of all morbidities, controlling for age, gender, BMI, smoking and wealth quintile, HIV-infected individuals on ART had 51% decreased odds (95% CI:0.26-0.92) of current morbidity compared to HIV-uninfected. In adjusted regression, compared to HIV-uninfected, the proportional odds (aPOR) of having elevated inflammation markers of IL6 (>1.56pg/mL) was nearly doubled in HIV-infected individuals on (aPOR 1.84; 95%CI: 1.05-3.21) and not on (aPOR 1.94; 95%CI: 1.11-3.41) ART. Compared to HIV-uninfected, HIV-infected individuals on ART had >twice partial proportional odds (apPOR=2.30;p=0.004) of having non-clinically significant raised hsCRP levels(>1ug/mL); ART-naïve HIV-infected individuals had >double apPOR of having hsCRP levels indicative of increased heart disease risk(>3.9ug/mL;p=0.008).Conclusions
Although HIV status was associated with increased inflammatory markers, our results highlight reduced morbidity in those receiving ART and underscore the need of pro-actively extending these services to HIV-uninfected older adults, beyond mere provision at fixed clinics. Synopsis The encephalization indices of angelfishes (Pomacanthidae) and butterflyfishes (Chaetodontidae) are typical of advanced perciform
fishes: both families lie in the upper part of the polygon of teleost indices. The chaetodontids seem to be a little more
encephalized than pomacanthids. The general morphology of the brains in both families is very similar: small olfactory bulbs,
large optic tectum and a cerebellum which covers the brain structures in front of it like a cap. This morphology is shared
by another family of the coral reef biotope, the Acanthuridae. The histological architecture is also typical of advanced teleosts,
with a cortex-like pallium, a laminated nucleus geniculatus (= pretectalis superficialis), a complex valvula cerebelli and
a corpus glomerulosum with a clear neuropile centre. The quantitative analysis of the main subdivisions of the brain, either
from relative volumes or from indices, shows small olfactory bulbs (microsmy) but important telencephalic and diencephalic
centres, large tectal centres (vision) and large cerebellum (precise locomotion). Many of these peculiarities are shared by
other fishes inhabiting coral reefs. The differences between the two families seem to be primarily correlated with food habits:

Parkinson's disease is a common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by α-synuclein (α-Syn)-containing Lewy body formation and selective loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. We have demonstrated the modulating effect of noopept, a novel proline-containing dipeptide drug with nootropic and neuroprotective properties, on α-Syn oligomerization and fibrillation by using thioflavin T fluorescence, far-UV CD, and atomic force microscopy techniques. Noopept does not bind to a sterically specific site in the α-Syn molecule as revealed by heteronuclear two-dimensional NMR analysis, but due to hydrophobic interactions with toxic amyloid oligomers, it prompts their rapid sequestration into larger fibrillar amyloid aggregates. Consequently, this process rescues the cytotoxic effect of amyloid oligomers on neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells as demonstrated by using cell viability assays and fluorescent staining of apoptotic and necrotic cells and by assessing the level of intracellular oxidative stress. The mitigating effect of noopept against amyloid oligomeric cytotoxicity may offer additional benefits to the already well-established therapeutic functions of this new pharmaceutical. 相似文献

It has been demonstrated previously that field pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Express) grown in hydroponic culture on a complete nutrient solution with low NH4+ concentrations (<0.5 mM) will produce a larger than normal proliferation of nodules. Peas grown in the absence of mineral N in hydroponic culture have been shown to rapidly autoregulate nodulation, forming a static nodule number by 14 to 21 days after planting. The present study further characterizes the effect of NH4+ concentration in hydroponic culture on nodulation and nodule growth. Peas were grown continually for 4 weeks at NH4+ concentrations that were autoregulatory (0.0 mM), stimulatory (0.2 mM) or inhibitory (1.0 mM), or peas were transferred between autoregulatory or NH4+ inhibited and stimulatory solutions after 2 weeks. The peas nodulated as expected when grown under constant autoregulatory, stimulatory or inhibitory concentrations of NH4+. When peas were transferred from the inhibitory (1.0 mM) to the stimulatory solution (0.2 mM) a massive proliferation of nodule primordia over the entire root system was observed within 3 days of the transfer. When they were transferred from the autoregulatory (0.0 mM) to the stimulatory (0.2 mM) solution a 10-day delay occurred before a proliferation in nodule primordia occurred at distal regions of the root system. These findings support our hypothesis that low concentrations (<1.0 mM) of NH4+ in hydroponic culture cause a suppression of autoregulation in pea. In addition, the temporal and spatial differences in nodule proliferation between transfer treatments demonstrate at a whole plant level that autoregulation and NH4+ inhibition suppress early nodule development via different mechanisms. 相似文献

In the present study we assessed the extent to which oviposition preferences and larval survival rates of the gall midge Dasineura ingeris Sylvén & Lövgren (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) can explain variation in its use of Salix viminalis phenotypes as hosts. Furthermore, based on oviposition preferences and juvenile survival rates we estimated the host potential of various Salix species and species hybrids. Egg distribution patterns explained 67% of the intraspecific variation in damage to S. viminalis shoots in the field. Juvenile survival, on the other hand, was not related to field damage or egg distribution patterns among the S. viminalis clones studied. Clones of complete or partial S. viminalis origin ranked highest in suitability for D. ingeris survival, and four out of these six clones also received the highest egg rankings. Species belonging to the subgenus Salix were not oviposited on at all, whereas others belonging to the same subgenus as S. viminalis, i.e. Vetrix, were intermediate in terms of oviposition rates. Although there was a significant correlation between D. ingeris egg distributions and larval survival rates on the clones in the Salix species/hybrid set, mismatches were evident. 相似文献

In several studies plant lectins have shown promise as transgenic resistance factors against various insect pests. We have here shown that pea seed lectin is a potential candidate for use against pollen beetle, a serious pest of Brassica oilseeds. In feeding assays where pollen beetle larvae were fed oilseed rape anthers soaked in a 1% solution of pea lectin there was a reduction in survival of 84% compared to larvae on control treatment and the weight of surviving larvae was reduced by 79%. When a 10% solution of pea lectin was used all larvae were dead after 4 days of testing. To further evaluate the potential use of pea lectin, transgenic plants of oilseed rape (Brassica napus cv. Westar) were produced in which the pea lectin gene under control of the pollen-specific promoter Sta44-4 was introduced. In 11 out of 20 tested plants of the T0-generation there was a significant reduction in larval weight, which ranged up to 46% compared to the control. A small but significant reduction in larval survival rate was also observed. In the T2-generation significant weight reductions, with a maximum of 32%, were obtained in 10 out of 33 comparisons between transgenic plants and their controls. Pea lectin concentrations in anthers of transgenic T2-plants ranged up to 1.5% of total soluble protein. There was a negative correlation between lectin concentration and larval growth. Plants from test groups with significant differences in larval weights had a significantly higher mean pea lectin concentration, 0.64% compared to 0.15% for plants from test groups without effect on larval weight. These results support the conclusion that pea lectin is a promising resistance factor for use in Brassica oilseeds against pollen beetles. 相似文献

Arachnomelia in Brown Swiss cattle is a monogenic autosomal recessive inherited congenital disorder of the skeletal system
giving affected calves a spidery look (OMIA ID 000059). Over a period of 20 years 15 cases were sampled in the Swiss and Italian
Brown cattle population. Pedigree data revealed that all affected individuals trace back to a single acknowledged carrier
founder sire. A genome scan using 240 microsatellites spanning the 29 bovine autosomes showed homozygosity at three adjacent
microsatellite markers on bovine Chr 5 in all cases. Linkage analysis confirmed the localization of the arachnomelia mutation
in the region of the marker ETH10. Fine-mapping and haplotype analysis using a total of 34 markers in this region refined the critical region of the arachnomelia
locus to a 7.19-Mb interval on bovine Chr 5. The disease-associated IBD haplotype was shared by 36 proven carrier animals
and allows marker-assisted selection. As the corresponding human and mouse chromosome segments do not contain any clear functional
candidate genes for this disorder, the mutation causing arachnomelia in the Brown Swiss cattle might help to identify an unknown
gene in bone development.
