Abstract. Distribution of tree seedlings, forest architecture, light conditions, ground vegetation and humus conditions were studied in a 45 m × 100 m area including multiple gaps in an old-growth beech forest. Gaps were created after some beech trees had been felled in severe storms in February 1990. A group of adult ash trees is found near the study site. The data were analyzed by Correspondence Analysis. Young seedlings (< 4 yr), of both Fraxinus (a sun species) and Fagus (a shade species), were most abundant under the crown of beech trees in semi-shade conditions, and where beech litter did not accumulate. Differences in the dissemination of Fraxinus and Fagus explained differences in the establishment of the two species. In contrast, older seedlings of beech established before the storms were more numerous in the gaps, suggesting a change in the ecological requirements of beech seedlings in the course of time. 相似文献

This study points out the hepatocyte interconversion of the linoleic acid family during hypertension. Hepatocyte 6 desaturase activity was higher in 1 month-old spontaneously hypertensive rats than in normotensive controls. A similar tendency was observed in 6 month-old SHR. 5 desaturase activity was higher only in 1 month-old spontaneously hypertensive rats as compared to controls. Desaturase activities were particularly high at the age of 6 months. The hepatocyte fatty acid composition showed an impairment of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Changes were greater in the young prehypertensive rats than in adults. A storage of n-3 long chain fatty acids is remarkable in adult hypertensive rats, suggesting an alteration in peroxisomal oxidation. Such modifications may be related to the prostaglandin precursors availability to peripheral tissues such as kidney. 相似文献

This paper studies the production of and the response to the trail in the African urticating ant,Tetramorium aculeatum under a variety of laboratory conditions. The trail was found to contain a complex mix of substances. Two of these components are secreted by the poison gland: The most volatile one is an attractant and increases the ants' linear speed; the other is the trail pheromone, which may act for days on a dry substrate. A third component is present on the last abdominal sternite. It acts as an attractant and a locostimulant and is synergistic of the trail pheromone. The activity of these substances increases with the age of the workers. While following a trail, foragers, even unrewarded, reinforce it with both the poison gland contents and the synergistic compound. The ants follow trails better in darkness than in light. A wetted trail rapidly loses its activity. The article suggests an explanation for the functioning ofT. aculeatum's natural trails, including the role of its different components. 相似文献

Summary Nitrate reductase is demonstrated to exert an autogenous control on its own synthesis. This effect requires the participation of the molybdenum cofactor. Use of strains in which the control region of the nar operon is mutated reveals two loci in this region: one, affected in strain LCB94, is common to both autoregulation and induction by nitrate while the other, mutated in strain LCB188, is specific for the induction by nitrate. It is proposed that the autogenous control prevents the unnecessary accumulation of the nitrate reductase subunits in the cytoplasm. 相似文献

Costs and benefits of freezing behaviour in the harvestman Eumesosoma roeweri (Arachnida, Opiliones)

Animals present an enormous variety of behavioural defensive mechanisms, which increase their survival, but often at a cost. Several animal taxa reduce their chances of being detected and/or recognized as prey items by freezing (remaining completely motionless) in the presence of a predator. We studied costs and benefits of freezing in immature Eumesosoma roeweri (Opiliones, Sclerosomatidae). Preliminary observations showed that these individuals often freeze in the presence of the syntopic predatory spider Schizocosa ocreata (Araneae, Lycosidae). We verified that harvestmen paired with predators spent more time freezing than when alone or when paired with a conspecific. Then, we determined that predator chemical cues alone did not elicit freezing behaviour. Next, we examined predator behaviour towards moving/non-moving prey and found that spiders attacked moving prey significantly more, suggesting an advantage of freezing in the presence of a predator. Finally, as measure of the foraging costs of freezing, we found that individuals paired with a predator for 2 h gained significantly less weight than individuals paired with a conspecific or left alone. Taken together, our results suggest that freezing may protect E. roeweri harvestmen from predatory attacks by wolf spiders, but at the cost of reduced food and/or water intake. 相似文献

Eight respiratory-deficient mutants ofChlamydomonas reinhardtii have been isolated after mutagenic treatment with acriflavine or ethidium bromide. They are characterized by their inability to grow or their very reduced growth under heterotrophic conditions. One mutation (Class III) is of nuclear origin whereas the seven remaining mutants (Classes I and II) display a predominantly paternalmt
- inheritance, typical of mutations residing in the mitochondrial DNA. Biochemical analysis has shown that all mutants are deficient in the cyanide-sensitive cytochrome pathway of the respiration whereas the alternative pathway is still functional. Measurements of complexes II + III (antimycin-sensitive succinate-cytochromec oxido-reductase) and complex IV (cytochromec oxidase) activities allowed to conclude that six mutations have to be localized in the mitochondrial apocytochromeb (COB) gene, one in the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene and one in a nuclear gene encoding a component of the cytochrome oxidase complex. By using specific probes, we have moreover demonstrated that five mutants (Class II mutants) contain mitochondrial DNA molecules deleted in the terminal end containing the COB gene and the telomeric region; they also possess dimeric molecules resulting from end-to-end junctions of deleted monomers. The two other mitochondrial mutants (Class I) have no detectable gross alteration. The need for aeration of microcosms duringmineralization of 14C-labeled compounds in highoxygen demand environments was assessed using activecompost-soil mixtures as the model system. Rapidmineralization of 14C-hexadecane occurred incontinuously aerated microcosms while nomineralization occurred in unaerated microcosms.
