During the 19th and early 20th centuries, ideas related to the possible origin in space of bioorganic molecules, or seeds, or even germs and organisms (and how they reached the Earth) included the Panspermia theory. Based on the idea of the eternity of life proposed by eminent physicists – such as Arrhenius and Kelvin – Panspermia is mainly divided into two branches: lithopanspermia (transport of germs inside stones traveling in space) and radiopanspermia (transport of spores by radiative pressure of stellar light). We point out some arguments to help to understand whether Panspermia could exist nowadays as the same theory defined one century ago. And we wonder about the kind of evolution Panspermia could have undergone during only a few decades. This possible evolution of the Panspermia concept takes place in the framework of the emergence of a new field, Bioastronomy. We present how this discipline has emerged during a few decades and how it has evolved. We consider its relationship with the progression of other scientific fields, and finally we examine how it is now included in different projects of space agencies. Bioastronomy researches having become more and more robust during the last few years, we emphasize several questions about new ideas and their consequences for the current hypothesis of Panspermia and of universal life.  相似文献

YKL-40 is a chitin-binding protein that is elevated in patients with various inflammatory conditions associated with ongoing remodeling. We investigated whether the levels of YKL-40 were up-regulated in the circulation and the airways of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and whether it promoted the production of inflammatory mediators from macrophages. Serum, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), bronchial biopsies, lung tissue specimens, and alveolar macrophages from never-smokers (n = 15), smokers without COPD (n = 20), and smokers with COPD (n = 30) were assessed for YKL-40 levels and immunolocalization. 4-Hydroxy-2-alkylquinolines (HAQs), especially 3,4-dihydroxy-2-heptylquinoline (Pseudomonas quinolone signal) and its precursor, 4-hydroxy-2-heptylquinoline, are attracting much attention, mainly because of their role as signaling molecules in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The pqsABCDE operon is centrally involved in their biosynthesis. The presence of a homologous operon in Burkholderia pseudomallei and B. thailandensis was recently reported. Thus, we have investigated the abilities of 11 Burkholderia species to produce HAQ-like molecules by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. We have identified 29 different HAQ derivatives produced by the only three Burkholderia species where a pqsABCDE homologue was found among available sequenced Burkholderia species genomes, including B. ambifaria, a member of the Burkholderia cepacia complex. In contrast with those of P. aeruginosa, Burkholderia HAQs typically bear a methyl group, hence their designation as 4-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-alkylquinolines (HMAQs). We identified three families of HMAQs with a saturated or unsaturated alkyl chain at the 2' position, in contrast with the 1' position of P. aeruginosa, including one with an N-oxide group. Furthermore, the operon in these species contains two more genes downstream of the pqsE homologue, resulting in the hmqABCDEFG operon. While the inactivation of hmqA inhibits the production of HMAQs, the methylation of the quinoline ring requires a putative methyltransferase encoded by hmqG. Interestingly, hmqA or hmqG mutations increase the production of acyl homoserine lactones and, consequently, phenotypes under the control of quorum sensing in B. ambifaria: antifungal activity, siderophore production, and proteolytic activity. These results indicate that only HAQs bearing a methyl group (HMAQs) are involved in quorum-sensing regulation.  相似文献

pS2/TFF1 overexpression in breast carcinomas correlates with response to hormonotherapy. We evaluated the clinical relevance of urinary pS2/TFF1 in breast cancer patients. In healthy controls (100 cases), it represents an individual and relatively stable parameter. Although 24 out 83 pre-operative breast cancer patients showed elevated levels, both the sensitivity and specificity of the test were too low for breast cancer screening. However, neoadjuvant hormonotherapy decreased pS2/TFF1 levels in nine out of 20 patients. Furthermore, among 22 patients receiving long-term adjuvant hormonotherapy, four exhibited elevated levels, two of them at the time of relapse. Thus, urinary pS2/TFF1 quantification might be suitable as an in vivo diagnosis for tumor hormonodependency, and disease follow-up during hormonotherapy.  相似文献

At concentrations corresponding to the levels usually reported in the blood of different species in the fed state, gastrin and pancreozymin but not secretin and vasoactive intestinal peptide, stimulate the lipoprotein lipase activity of adipose tissue from fasted rats. The enzyme response to gastrin is, like that to insulin, dependent on the presence of glucose and is not additive with the enzyme response to insulin. On the contrary, the effect of pancreozymin on lipoprotein lipase is glucoseindependent and is additive with the enzyme response to insulin. Both the effects of gastrin and pancreozymin depend on protein synthesis as shown by their suppression by cycloheximide. With isolated fat cells, gastrin increases both the releasable and non-releasable lipase activities whereas pancreozymin increases almost exclusively the non-releasable activity. The mechanisms and the possible physiological significance of these findings are discussed in relationship with the influence of insulin and the nutritional state on adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase.  相似文献

Indirect interactions in food webs can strongly influence the net effect of global change on ecological communities yet they are rarely quantified and hence remain poorly understood. Using a 22-year time series, we investigated climate-induced and predator-mediated indirect effects on grazing intensity in the tundra food web of Bylot Island, which experienced a warming trend over the last two decades. We evaluated the relative effects of environmental parameters on the proportion of plant biomass grazed by geese in wetlands and examined the temporal changes in the strength of these cascading effects. Migrating geese are the dominant herbivores on Bylot Island and can consume up to 60% of the annual production of wetland graminoids. Spring North Atlantic Oscillation, mid-summer temperatures and summer abundance of lemmings (prey sharing predators with geese) best-explained annual variation in grazing intensity. Goose grazing impact increased in years with high temperatures and high lemming abundance. However, the strength of these indirect effects on plants changed over time. Grazing intensity was weakly explained by environmental factors in recent years, which were marked by a sharp increase in plant primary production and steady decrease in grazing pressure. Indirect effects do not seem to be reversing the direct positive effect of warming on wetland plants. We suggest that cascading effects on plants may lag considerably behind direct effects in vertebrate dominated arctic communities, especially where key herbivore populations are strongly affected by factors outside of the Arctic [Current Zoology 60 (2): 189-202, 2014].  相似文献

Domains required late in the virus budding process (L domains) have been identified in the Gag proteins of a number of retroviruses. Here we show that the human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 candidate L domain motif PPPY is indeed required for virus production. Strikingly, however, mutation of this motif arrested virus particles at an earlier stage in the budding process than was seen for mutation of the L domain motifs thus far described for retroviruses. In view of the exchangeability of such domains, we propose that the retrovirus budding process may involve a continuum from bud formation to membrane fission.  相似文献

Coffee is one of the world’s most important agricultural commodities. Coffee belongs to the Rubiaceae family in the euasterid I clade of dicotyledonous plants, to which the Solanaceae family also belongs. Two bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) libraries of a homozygous doubled haploid plant of Coffea canephora were constructed using two enzymes, HindIII and BstYI. A total of 134,827 high quality BAC-end sequences (BESs) were generated from the 73,728 clones of the two libraries, and 131,412 BESs were conserved for further analysis after elimination of chloroplast and mitochondrial sequences. This corresponded to almost 13 % of the estimated size of the C. canephora genome. 6.7 % of BESs contained simple sequence repeats, the most abundant (47.8 %) being mononucleotide motifs. These sequences allow the development of numerous useful marker sites. Potential transposable elements (TEs) represented 11.9 % of the full length BESs. A difference was observed between the BstYI and HindIII libraries (14.9 vs. 8.8 %). Analysis of BESs against known coding sequences of TEs indicated that 11.9 % of the genome corresponded to known repeat sequences, like for other flowering plants. The number of genes in the coffee genome was estimated at 41,973 which is probably overestimated. Comparative genome mapping revealed that microsynteny was higher between coffee and grapevine than between coffee and tomato or Arabidopsis. BESs constitute valuable resources for the first genome wide survey of coffee and provide new insights into the composition and evolution of the coffee genome.  相似文献
