Biofuels provide a potential route to avoiding the global political instability and environmental issues that arise from reliance on petroleum. Currently, most biofuel is in the form of ethanol generated from starch or sugar, but this can meet only a limited fraction of global fuel requirements. Conversion of cellulosic biomass, which is both abundant and renewable, is a promising alternative. However, the cellulases and pretreatment processes involved are very expensive. Genetically engineering plants to produce cellulases and hemicellulases, and to reduce the need for pretreatment processes through lignin modification, are promising paths to solving this problem, together with other strategies, such as increasing plant polysaccharide content and overall biomass. 相似文献

Cyanobacterial NDH-1 is a multisubunit complex involved in proton translocation, cyclic electron flow around photosystem I and CO2 uptake. The function and location of several of its small subunits are unknown. In this work, the location of the small subunits NdhL, -M, -N, -O and CupS of Synechocystis 6803 NDH-1 was established by electron microscopy (EM) and single particle analysis. To perform this, the subunits were enlarged by fusion with the YFP protein. After classification of projections, the position of the YFP tag was revealed; all five subunits are integrated in the membrane domain. The results on NDH-1 demonstrate that a GFP tag can be revealed after data processing of EM data sets of moderate size, thus showing that this way of labeling is a fast and reliable way for subunit mapping in multisubunit complexes after partial purification. 相似文献

ABSTRACTObjective: This study explored the time of day effect of balance performance, functional capacities and risk of fall in three different times in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the association between these variations and those of RA symptoms.Methods: A “discontinual” protocol, composed of three test sessions, carried out at 6 am, 2 pm and 10 pm was set up, in order to investigate the time of day effect of balance performance, functional capacities, risk of fall, stiffness, range of motion, swollen and painful joints in women with RA.Results: Time Up and Go Test (TUGT), Functional Reach Test (FRT) and tinetti test scores were significantly higher (p < .01) at 6 am and at 10 pm compared to 2 pm. Stiffness, range of motion, swollen and painful joints values were significantly higher (p < .01) at 6 am and at 10 pm compared to 2 pm. A significant difference was observed on the stiffness, range of motion and swollen joints values between 6 am and 10 pm that were higher at 6 am (p < .05).Using Pearson’s coefficient, correlations were found between RA symptom values; and TUGT, FRT and Tinetti test scores.Conclusion: Results showed a time of day effect of balance performance, functional capacities and risk of falls in women with RA. This variation indicates an alteration of performance at 6 am and 10 pm. Beta2-adrenergic receptor (beta2AR) gene polymorphisms have been reported to be associated with various asthma-related traits in different racial/ethnic populations. However, it is unknown whether beta2AR genetic variants are associated with asthma in African Americans. In this study, we have examined whether there is association between beta2AR genetic variants and asthma in African Americans. We have recruited 264 African American asthmatic subjects and 176 matched healthy controls participating in the Study of African Americans, Asthma, Genes and Environments (SAGE). We genotyped seven known and recently identified beta2AR SNP variants, then tested genotype and haplotype association of asthma-related traits with the beta2AR SNPs in our African American cohort with adjustment of confounding effect due to admixture background and environmental risk factors. We found a significant association of the SNP -47 (Arg-19Cys) polymorphism with DeltaFEF(25-75), a measure of bronchodilator drug responsiveness, in African American asthmatics after correction for multiple testing (P = 0.001). We did not observe association of the SNP +46 (Arg16Gly) variant with asthma disease diagnosis and asthma-related phenotypes. In contrast to previous results between the Arg16Gly variant and traits related to bronchodilator responsiveness, our results indicate that the Arg-19Cys polymorphism in beta upstream peptide may play an important role in bronchodilator drug responsiveness in African American subjects. Our findings highlight the importance of investigating genetic risk factors for asthma in different populations. 相似文献
