Aim It is a central issue in ecology and biogeography to understand what governs community assembly and the maintenance of biodiversity in tropical rain forest ecosystems. A key question is the relative importance of environmental species sorting (niche assembly) and dispersal limitation (dispersal assembly), which we investigate using a large dataset from diverse palm communities. Location Lowland rain forest, western Amazon River Basin, Peru. Methods We inventoried palm communities, registering all palm individuals and recording environmental conditions in 149 transects of 5 m × 500 m. We used ordination, Mantel tests and indicator species analysis (ISA) to assess compositional patterns, species responses to geographical location and environmental factors. Mantel tests were used to assess the relative importance of geographical distance (as a proxy for dispersal limitation) and environmental differences as possible drivers of dissimilarity in palm species composition. We repeated the Mantel tests for subsets of species that differ in traits of likely importance for habitat specialization and dispersal (height and range size). Results We found a strong relationship between compositional dissimilarity and environmental distance and a weaker but also significant relationship between compositional dissimilarity and geographical distance. Consistent with expectations, relationships with environmental and geographical distance were stronger for understorey species than for canopy species. Geographical distance had a higher correlation with compositional dissimilarity for small‐ranged species compared with large‐ranged species, whereas the opposite was true for environmental distance. The main environmental correlates were inundation and soil nutrient levels. Main conclusions The assembly of palm communities in the western Amazon appears to be driven primarily by species sorting according to hydrology and soil, but with dispersal limitation also playing an important role. The importance of environmental characteristics and geographical distance varies depending on plant height and geographical range size in agreement with functional predictions, increasing our confidence in the inferred assembly mechanisms.  相似文献

Wetland ecosystems are the natural centers of freshwater formation in northern Russia lowland landscapes. The humic acidic waters formed in bogs feed the numerous lakes of the northern regions. One milliliter of the water in these lakes contains up to 104 ultrasmall microbial cells that pass through “bacterial” filters with a pore size of 0.22 μm. The vast majority of these cells do not grow on nutrient media and cannot be identified by routine cultivation-based approaches. Their identification was performed by analysis of clone libraries obtained by PCR amplification of archaeal and bacterial 16S rRNA genes from the fraction of cells collected from water filtrates of acidic lakes. Most of the obtained bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences represented the class Betaproteobacteria and exhibited the highest homology of (94–99%) with 16S rRNA genes of representatives of the genera Herbaspirillum, Herminiimonas, Curvibacter, and Burkholderia. The archaeal 16S rRNA gene clone library comprised genes of Euryarchaeota representatives. One-third of these genes exhibited 97–99% homology to the 16S rRNA genes of taxonomically described organisms of the orders Methanobacteriales and Methanosarcinales. The rest of the cloned archaeal 16S rRNA genes were only distantly related (71–74% homology) to those in all earlier characterized archaea.  相似文献

The contents of endogenous free and conjugated polyamines, putrescine (Put) and spermidine (Spd), were determined during 9 week of vernalization (at 5 °C) in winter wheat seedlings cultivated on Murashige and Skoog media without (MS0) and with 2 mg dm−3 zearalenone (MSZEN). At the 4th week of chilling treatment, which is sufficient to induce generative development in 30 % of plants, the marked increase in free and conjugated forms of Put and free Spd were observed. The presence of ZEN in medium significantly accelerated the vernalization. About 20 % of plants treated with ZEN flowered already after 2 weeks and 40 % after 3 weeks of chilling. Significantly higher content of free Put was determined in roots grown on MSZEN compared with MS0 during the first 5 weeks of vernalization with maximum at the 4th week. After germination, a marked decrease in free Spd content was observed both in plants grown on MS0 and MSZEN. Application of ZEN significantly slowed down the Spd decline in leaves and roots during the first and second week of vernalization. The content of Spd and its conjugates decreased in vernalized plants after 1 week of cultivation at 20 °C.  相似文献

Treatment of freshly isolated, bovine neurofilaments with Escherichia coli alkaline phosphatase removes over 90% of the phosphate groups from serine residues of the Mr 200,000 and 150,000 polypeptide components (NF200 and NF150). Dephosphorylated NF200 and NF150 remain associated with filaments, but migrate in sodium dodecyl sulfate gels with reduced apparent molecular weights. Unusual migration appears to be due to modification at regions of these polypeptides that are peripheral to the neurofilament backbone as defined by limited chymotryptic digestion. Over 90 monoclonal antibodies recognizing epitopes located within the peripheral domain of native NF200 all show reduced affinity for dephosphorylated NF200. A single monoclonal antibody binds within the filament-associated domain of NF200 and its recognition of NF200 is unaffected upon treatment of neurofilaments with phosphatase. Around 50% of our monoclonal antibodies that bind NF150 monospecifically and at epitopes within its peripheral domain have reduced affinities for NF150 from phosphatase-treated filaments, while the remaining 50% bind native and dephosphorylated NF150 equally well. The smallest neurofilament component (NF70) contains few phosphate groups, most of which remain after treatment of neurofilaments with phosphatase. The resulting form of NF70 migrates normally in gels and its recognition by antibodies is unchanged. We conclude that phosphorylation modifies the structure of the two larger neurofilament polypeptides along domains that are peripheral to the filamentous backbone and that these effects are more pronounced for NF200 than for NF150.  相似文献

We undertook an immunohistochemical analysis of human bronchopulmonary epithelial neoplasms and pleural mesotheliomas using a monoclonal antibody which recognizes ras oncogene products (p21ras). The monoclonal antibody, RAP-5, recognizes both unaltered and certain mutated p21ras. Formalin fixed and paraffin embedded tissue samples of 187 lung epithelial tumors and 27 pleural mesotheliomas were investigated; normal and bronchiectatic lungs were similarly studied. Normal lung and pleural tissue did not immunostain except for occasional type II pneumocytes. Reactive type II pneumocytes adjacent to carcinomas and bronchiectasis immunostained consistently. Twenty four/34 (71%) squamous carcinomas immunostained. Only 8/50 (16%) adenocarcinomas immunostained focally and weakly whereas 19/24 (79%) bronchioloalveolar carcinomas immunostained. Eleven/18 (61%) large cell carcinomas immunostained with variable intensity. Eleven/13 (85%) carcinoids, 6/7 (85%) well differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas, and 18/21 (86%) intermediate cell neuroendocrine carcinomas immunostained while none of 20 small cell neuroendocrine carcinomas immunostained. Only a few mesotheliomas were immunostained focally. Two/14 (14%) epithelial type and 1/9 (11%) biphasic type mesotheliomas immunostained weakly; none of 4 spindle cell mesotheliomas immunostained. We conclude that while at least occasional cases of most types of pulmonary epithelial neoplasms express p21ras, the frequency and intensity of the expression are distinctly greater in certain tumor types such as squamous, bronchioloalveolar, and neuroendocrine neoplasm except for the small cell type. Contrary to these lung epithelial neoplasms, most mesotheliomas did not immunostain for p21ras. Whether the enhanced p21ras expression may point to a different mechanism of transformation or may merely reflect differentiation features remains undetermined.  相似文献

The thrombopoietic serum activity was examined in rats during thrombocytopenia produced by bleeding or after treatment with antithrombocyte serum (ATS). 6 hours after both treatments the thrombopoietic activity of the serum, i.e. its content of thrombopoietin, is increased. After the ATS treatment of nephrectomized animals a similar increase of thrombopoietic activity as in normal animals could be achieved. In contrast to that, no similar increase of thrombopoietic activity was observed in nephrectomized animals after blood loss. According to the results of the authors the increase of thrombopoietic activity produced by different stimuli can be attributed to different mechanisms.  相似文献

The influence of malate and cytochrome c on fatty acid oxidation under control and ischemic conditions was investigated. In the medium without malate, cytochrome did not make fatty acid oxidation decreased during ischemia return to normal. Oxidation in the media containing malate and cytochrome did not differ from control only when it was measured after preliminary oxidation of endogenous substrates. The ratio of palmitoyl-CoA and palmitoyl carnitine to the respiration rates at state 3 was unchanged at 60 min ischemia. Apparently, no changes in carnitine acyltransferase playing a role in oxidation of palmitoyl-CoA took place. Thus, the decrease of fatty acid oxidation at early periods of ischemia is largely caused by a reduction in the content of cytochrome c and intermediates of Krebs cycle in the mitochondria.  相似文献

It was shown in in vitro experiments that etmozin at a concentration of 100 micrograms/ml significantly suppressed (by 21%) platelet aggregation induced by ADP, but it had no effect on platelet aggregation induced by arachidonic acid. In in vivo experiments etmozin was found to cause a marked suppression of tendon collagen-induced platelet aggregation in the doses 2-5 mg/kg having antiarrhythmic activity. Under suppressed platelet aggregation induced by indomethacin, the prostaglandin biosynthesis blocker etmozin displayed no antiaggregation effect. It is suggested that etmozin effects on ADP release from platelets play the main role in the mechanism of its antiaggregation action.  相似文献

Changes in the duration and size of the vulnerable period of the myocardium in the presence of respiratory changes were studied in acute experiments on rats. The limits of the vulnerable period were determined by directly stimulating the heart during ventilation via the enlarged respiratory dead space, during hyperventilation and during heart failure. In the control group (normal ventilation without enlargement of the dead space), the vulnerable period lasted 5.7 +/- 0.76 ms. During ventilation via the enlarged dead space, hypercapnic hypoxaemia developed and the vulnerable period was markedly prolonged (18.55 +/- 5.29 ms) by a shift of its inner limit to the left. Hyperventilation caused normoxic to hyperoxic hypocapnia and markedly reduced the duration of the vulnerable period (8.17 +/- 2.21 and 9.31 +/- 2.38 ms respectively). The vulnerable period lengthened the most in heart failure (25.46 +/- 3.93), mainly as a result of a shift of its outer limit. In all the experimental groups there was a shift of the vulnerable period to the right, which was fastest in hypercapnic hypoxaemia and slowest in hyperoxic hypocapnia. The administration of Inderal (3 mg/kg i.p.) or Arfonad (50 mg/kg i.p.) markedly shortened the vulnerable period during hypercapnic hypoxaemia (9.87 +/- 2.78 and 9.32 +/- 2.16 ms respectively), but did not block the shift. Lengthening of the vulnerable period during hypercapnic hypoxaemia was probably due to activation of sympathetic nerves via beta-adrenergic receptors.  相似文献
